In Beyond the Perfect Stage, Stephanie Berger captures the Merce Cunningham Dance Company performing in a series of site-specific "Events" from 2008 to 2011 from a multiplicity of perspectives, creating a photographic choreography that combines the "Events" in a new way. The Cunningham dancers warm up and then perform in various situations--as Cunningham called the galleries and the especially constructed stages for each "Event"--including Richard Serra's steel sculptures, Dan Flavin's neon light installations, Sol LeWitt's Minimalist white boxes and the vast Drill Hall of the Park Avenue Armory. Berger captures Cunningham's evanescent art, constructing a new experience while at the same time preserving the original, thus operating very much within the aesthetic framework Cunningham himself proposed. This book is a revised and enlarged version of the original maquette for Josef Koudelka's Cikáni (Czech for Gypsies) prepared by Koudelka and graphic designer Milan Kopřiva in 1968, and intended for publication in Prague in 1970. Koudelka left Czechoslovakia in 1970 after extensively documenting the Russian invasion of Prague in August 1968. The book was never published in that original form.This extended version consists of 109 photographs taken between 1962 and 1971 in what was, at the time, Czechoslovakia (Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia), Romania, Hungary, France, and Spain. The word Gypsies (the common name for this group when the photographs were taken between 1962 and 1971, before the current term Roma was established) is used as the book title.Sociologist Will Guy, author of the text that accompanied the first publication of Gypsies, has contributed an updated essay, tracing the migration of the Roma from their original homeland in northern India, to their current status-one that continues to be contested internationally.

Die Abstraktion, insbesondere die­jenige der ­frühen Jahre der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, kann heute als eine politische ­»Bereinigung« eingestuft werden, stand sie doch stellvertretend für die »offene Gesellschaft«. Entsprechend sind zahlreiche Sammlungen in deutschen Museen ausgerichtet, darunter auch die der Kunsthalle Bielefeld (Ausstellung von Dóra Maurer in Bielefeld: 29/1-15/5/2022). In ehemaligen Ostblock­ländern wie Ungarn aber, hatte die Abstraktion eine »oppositionelle« Konnotation. Durch die Nicht-Gegenständlichkeit ihrer Arbeiten, die im Gegensatz zur offiziellen Vorgabe des Sozialis­tischen Realismus stand, nimmt Dóra Maurer eine Sonderstellung ein. Verstärkt wurde das durch ­ihre Kontakte und Reisen in den Westen, die für sie aufgrund ihrer doppelten ungarischen und österreichischen Staatsbürgerschaft schon vor 1989 möglich waren. Ihre Experimente in den ­Medien Fotografie und Film in den 1970er Jahren sowie ihre auf prozessualer Verschiebung beruhen­den abstrakt-geometrischen Arbeiten weisen eine offensichtliche fomale Parallelität zur Nachkriegskunst Westeuropas und der USA auf. ­Tatsächlich jedoch sind ihre Arbeiten ohne die ­Erfahrung des Lebens unter dem kommunistischen Regime nicht zu denken.

The Black Eye continues Michal Chelbin's exploration of the world of athletes and performers from Eastern Europe, Israel, and England. The athletes and wrestlers in this series are studies in contrasts: youth and manhood, strength and weakness, tenderness and rigidity, odd and ordinary, splendor and roughness. Presented in a clear and balanced format, the pictures challenge the viewer with their ambiguity.While revealing little about the lives of Chelbin's subjects, the photos do reveal an internal drama, capturing a tension between the gaze and the presence of each individual. These athletes are exhausted after a hard training session or fight. Some are breathless, sweaty, and fatigued. Chelbin searches for a certain expression in which they have almost calmed their breath but not yet fully regained their self-awareness. It is a moment when they have lifted their mask and surrendered to the camera. Her aim is to expose this moment, and the contradiction between the person and the persona.

Die Bilder haben nichts Schaulustiges, zeigen sich unbeeindruckt von all dem, was als Event daherkommt. Es geht ihnen nicht um das, was los ist,was passiert und so ins Auge springt, sondern vielmehr um das, was nicht in dieser Weise geschieht, was nicht gleich Ereignis ist
