Compiles ON-A work philosophy: a constant search for innovative ad hoc solutions for each project, using the most updated technologies and design research. This book exposes and collects the innovations developed through 15 years of work at ON-A, through lengthy conversations between its founders and directors (Eduardo Gutiérrez and Jordi Fernández) and the editor. This is not a usual monograph, but rather an exploration of ideas from an innovation point of view, according to four basic criteria: Design, Laboratory, Technology and Emotion. With the aim of understanding the different degrees of innovation on how they operate in ON-A, the book is organized into these four blocks. The first one is routed on Design as a starting point to attend the control of the geometry (inspired on mineral, arboreal, and organic shapes) and encoding the information (using parametric design, BIM, and coding techniques). That methodology allows us to visualize and interact with the continuum of data and workflows of all stages of development, attending to the entire life cycle of the project. Since ON-A considers themselves as a Laboratory rather than as a professional architecture office, the second conversation explores our ways of making innovative architecture throughout bioclimatic and sustainable experiments and tests done in their works and projects. In that chapter they talk about how to incorporate the 'green' feature through bioarchitecture --a layer of technological green that appeals to sustainability from materiality, management and maintenance-- in order to re-naturalize cities and reconnect people with the natural environment in favor of an ecosystem balance. Technology is the third chapter, a key tool to enhance design and creativity, carrying out complete material, structural and installation modeling that gives us control of any layout whether we use curved glass, precast GRC, wood or another innovative material technique to build their projects. Last but not least, the fourth conversation is about how ON-A's projects work as a catalyst for creating positive Emotions: physical-visual, well-being, and comfort that contribute occupants' health and flexible usability of the designed spaces. As a result of these four conversations, the book shows how to innovate in architecture from different layers with only one concern: helping to reduce the environmental impact of human intervention, improving citizens' quality of life and seeking the emotional interactions between the inhabitants and their environment.

Climate change poses challenges for human survival and societal development, including frequent urban disasters such as high wave and urban waterlogging, as well as extreme weather events such as sea level rise, floods, tropical storm, wide-range drought, and high temperature in polar regions. Contributed in part by reducing greenhouse gas emission, and also by the means of improving local resilience, the international community have been working on mitigating the uncertain impact of climate change. Against the backdrop of carbon reduction policy such as Carbon Emission Peak and Carbon Neutrality proposed by Chinese government, regional sustainable progress inevitably calls for resilient strategies for human settlements that address local issues upon climate change adaption and resilience theories. Since the impact of climate change on human settlements, risk and resilience assessment methods, and spatial and technological strategies have already broadly studied by international academia, more attention should be taken into research on spatial planning, urban design, landscape design, innovative engineering, emerging technology application, and interdisciplinary perspective to strive to realize the goals of peaking carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality. A guide to contemporary architecture practice in one of the most important fields today - the transformative adaptation of existing buildings. Transform: The Architecture of Adaptation will explore and document the ecological and urban imperative to revive and adapt existing built fabric, and it will demonstrate innovative and timeless tools and methods for creating successful new architecture out of old structures and found conditions. The book will be illustrated primarily, but not exclusively, with projects by Deborah Berke Partners, including academic buildings, boutique hotels, and community and cultural centers. Essays by Deborah Berke, Noah Biklen, Arthi Krishnamoorthy, and Alan Brake introduce each chapter. It will also include contributions by critics, planners, and artists with a shared interest in creating a sustainable, equitable, and enriching urban environment. The term 'adaptive reuse' is bland and imprecise. It implies a lack of rigor, as if old buildings were discarded objects that can easily be repurposed, like a turning an old milk crate into a bookshelf. Buildings - good ones, bad ones, whether designed by a famous architect, or without an author are complex things, with histories, with impacts on their surroundings, with relations to people and places. They do not all deserve to be saved, but many do. Sometimes an unremarkable building can be transformed into something better than it ever was. Even good buildings by noted architects can be improved upon, especially if their use has changed or if their context has been significantly altered. In much of the country, particularly small to mid-sized, post-industrial cities, opportunities abound for the creative reuse of existing buildings. Deborah Berke Partners approaches these building - old warehouses, office buildings, even a historic sanatorium designed by H. H. Richardson - as material resources and as the foundation of sustainable urban redevelopment. These projects have impacts that extend far beyond their walls - this work is part of an urgent rethinking of American urbanism.

The rapidly growing large cities of Asia are critical to understanding our future footprint. Asian cities provide insights into new ways of being densely urbanised. The by-product of this unprecedented metropolitan convergence will be the emergence of new urbanisms and new architectures, new models for living and making culture. The Supertight refers to the small, intense, robust and hyper-condensed spaces that emerge as a by-product of extreme levels of urban density. Tightness arises as consequence of density, but tightness itself is not density. Tightness is a series of social, economic and cultural practices that have developed in cities as a response to the rapid growth and consolidation of cities. While architectural models of density have been heavily explored, this project investigates the culture of tightness that has emerged in Asian cities over the past thirty years, and the role that designers play in the material and social behaviours of tightness. To be tight is to be small and constrained, but also to be open to the economies and social intimacy of being close. Ultimately this project aims to unpack and convey both the delight and difficulty that emerges through the close occupation of large cities.

The Open Call in Flanders (the Dutch-speaking, northern part of Belgium) is more than just another architecture competition: any governmental agency or public institution can choose to work with an Open Call for any given construction project. Since its invention by the first Flemish Government Architect bOb Van Reeth in 2000, more than 700 assignments have been published in this procedure, resulting in almost 350 completed public architectural and infrastructural projects so far. Thanks to high-performance composite structures made of wood and steel or concrete, wooden buildings are now being erected far beyond the high-rise boundaries. An end to the increase in altitude is hardly in sight. Wooden constructions are also on the uptrend in residential and office construction, sports halls, industrial buildings and bridges. They are the epitome of sustainable building and, thanks to new prefabrication processes, are also competitive in terms of construction costs. The book shows the current development of structural planning with wood on the basis of 20 outstanding engineering structures. I 1971 fik tre begivenheder modernismen til at tippe over i Danmark: Bøgerne BO-miljø af Ingrid Gehl, Livet mellem husene af Jan Gehl og en storstilet konkurrence om lavt byggeri arrangeret af Statens Byggeforskningsinstitut viste, at den menneskelige dimension var blevet glemt i både byggeri og byplanlægning. Budskaberne vakte straks genklang hos lægfolk, der havde været vidne til brutale gadeopdelinger, nedrivning af hele kvarterer og dyster og afvisende kranarkitektur. Blandt eksperterne var reaktionen derimod i første omgang ret forbeholden. Men ideerne sejrede, bilerne blev skubbet ud af bymidterne, og en række udviklinger viste større omsorg for mennesker. Bymidter, både i Danmark og i resten af verden, har taget arven fra de to forfattere til sig. Den Menneskelige Dimension genoptrykker Ingrid og Jan Gehls banebrydende originalpublikationer og kaster et blik på 50 års byudvikling.
