This book, by film critic Hal C F Astell of the Apocalypse Later review site, covers every feature and every short film that screened at the International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival in Tempe, AZ in 2011, 2012 and 2013. These were 'the transition years' as the festival merged into its big sister, the Phoenix Film Festival, and it was forced to reinvent itself. Inspired by the realisation many of his reviews of festival films were the only reviews that existed online and that some films had no presence left on the internet, as if they had never been, he aimed to review every film that played this festival, which holds a special place in his heart, and to compile these reviews into book form. This book, whatever else it is, is a line in the sand to say that these films existed, that they played a festival, were seen by an audience, even won awards. Hopefully reading about them here will keep some of them alive because no film deserves to die. No, not even that one. The foreword was written by Mike Flanagan, the director of Absentia and Oculus. The afterword was written by Andrea Canales, the Midnite Movie Mamacita. The cover is by Marty Freetage. Features reviewed include Absentia, Midnight Son, The Mole Man of Belmont Avenue, Triple Hit, Hisss, I am Nancy, The People vs George Lucas, Stake Land, Tucker and Dale vs Evil, Below Zero, It's in the Blood, Folklore, Pig, Beyond the Black Rainbow, The Brain That Wouldn't Die, FDR: American Badass!, Monster Brawl, Slumber Party Slaughter, The Theatre Bizarre, The Victim, With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story, Found, Nailbiter, Sader Ridge, Channeling, Found in Time, Space Milkshake, Errors of the Human Body, The Four, Gamera vs Guiron, The Ghastly Love of Johnny X, Kiss of the Damned, Play Dead, Saw and They Live. Short horror films reviewed include Zombiefication, I Rot, Last Seen on Dolores Street, Cold Sore, Bugbaby, Red Umbrella, Cell Phone Psycho, Escape, Shoreditch Slayer, Follow the Sun!, Brutal Relax, Bad Moon Rising, Ambush, The Table, Roid Rage, The Waking, Employee of the Month, Diecons, Game, The Root of the Problem, Steve from Accounting vs The Shadow Dwellers, Sybling Rivalry, Midnight Daisy, Welcome Wagon and Killer Kart. Short sci-fi films reviewed include The Island, Earthship, Picture Show at the End of the World, Roman's Ark, Earwigs, Antedon, The Hollow Men, SNAFU, The Turing Love Affair, The Recipient, Carry Tiger to the Mountain, The Uncanny Valley, Doctor Glamour, Hollywood Forever, Secret Identity, 20th Century Man, Solaria, Alchemy and Other Imperfections, Mirage, Y Sci Fi, How to Kill Your Clone, Anaphora, Outsight, Dream Cleaners, Dry Gulch, Ontogenesis, Ellie, A Conversation About Cheating with My Time Traveling Future Self, The Secret Keeper, Low Tide in the High Desert, Restitution, Iris, Odokuro, Sol, All I Think of is You, Quantum, Golem, Sunset Day, Flashback, White Room: 02B3 and The Phoenix.

How do we find Christ in films that are not directly about Jesus of Nazareth? This has been one of the recurring challenges to Peter Malone who has spent more than fifty years as a reviewer of films with a constant interest in uncovering themes, characters and plots that reveal Christ-like figures and images.Christ-figures - there on our screens is a fascinating insight into more than thirty films that the author explores for their - generally hidden - portrayals of characteristics that reflect the life and teaching of Jesus in the Gospels. The book is offered to help us reflect on the films and to discuss them in formal or informal groups. It will also be a rich resource for Religious Education when film becomes a way of helping students appreciate how the Gospel messages are interpreted, portrayed and lived.... a really fertile topic for examination and allows us to ask searching questions about how we may be afforded the opportunity to learn more about Christ through film and film through Christ. - Chris Deacy, Reader in Theology and Religious Studies, University of Kent.... presents readers with a stimulating unmasking of how movies work, why they work, and what drives film critics to make the judgments they do... This is an outstanding book by an inspiring scholar. - Peter Sheehan AO, Associate of Jesuit Media.Peter's writing provides us with contemporary theological language and keen insight that unpacks depictions of Christ and Christ-like characters.- Charles Watt, Deputy Principal: Faith and Mission, Genazzano College, Kew.Peter has highlighted the Jesus figure in some of my favourite movies, and now I have a whole new list for my 'to watch list'. - Sr Rita Malavisi, National Chair, Conference of Spiritual Directors Australia.

The former Rolling Stone writer and MTV host takes off from classic Roger Ebert and sails boldly into the new millennium.Millions grew up reading the author's record reviews and watching him on MTV's "The Week in Rock." In this collection of more than 200 movie reviews from MTV.com and, more recently, the Reason magazine Website, plus sidebars exclusive to this volume, Loder demonstrates his characteristic wry voice and finely honed observations. The author shines when writing on the best that Hollywood and indie filmmakers have to offer, and his negative reviews are sometimes more fun than his raves. Most movie reviews written at the time a movie comes out are inscribed by critics on stone tablets. These opinions hardly ever change even if there is discernible positive or negative reactions from movie audiences. Movie reviewers and critics are part of the movie industry and this can obstruct their objectivity. This author trained to enter that industry at USC Cinema School but instead entered another industry with a strong classical and scientific background while remaining a movie lover since age five. As time goes on, social mores change and some movies, although perhaps not the great classics, get vastly outdated. Traditional critics would still like you to see them all! But practically, how many lifetimes do you have? This author, along with his collaborator Joyce, have seen most of the movies selected for this list of 769 movies two or three times. They selected only those movies they think still speak to people today and don't put the contemporary viewer to sleep. This vetting process resulted in 336 movies they rate as "e;Classics"e; and 433 movies they rate as "e;Gems"e; in 39 movie genres (categories) covering 91 years (1929-2020). This book is a bodacious bucket list of all-time sure-fire winners, plus ideas for future movies. It is not an encyclopedic movie guide (which are generally written by committees!) or a book slanted toward foreign films or those deemed historically significant for some reason other than enjoyment and engagement for the viewer. Explore these movies and you will give yourself many fulfilling movie memories.

Siegfried Kracauer's film theory is more than a theory of film. By understanding film as essentially a medium of the reflection of reality, Kracauer develops a perspective on the social and political issues of his time that is at once social-theoretical, aesthetic, and cultural. For him, film conveys both the ideological daydreams and emancipatory processes of social self-enlightenment. Going to the movies today »with Kracauer« thus means understanding the aesthetic experience of film not only as a mass cultural diversion, but also as the production of a critical sense: a sense for material reality and the potentials for liberation that lie dormant within it. Each of the contributions to this volume tests and explores this sense of Kracauer's critical thinking on film and society.Mit Beiträgen von / Contributions by: Steffen Andrae, Lena Appel, Daniel Fairfax, Anne Gräfe, Louis Hartnoll, Leonie Hunter, Juliana Müller, Nora Neuhaus, Anneliese Ostertag, Claudia Young-joo Park, Almut Poppinga, Heide Schlüpmann, Jochen Schuff, Sebastian Staab, Felix Trautmann, Franziska Wildt.

  • af Quentin Crisp
    268,95 kr.

Since moving to New York City over a decade ago, Quentin Crisp has brought his love of the cinema and his notorious wit together in a series of essays on films and film stars. A veteran film-goer of seventy years who has kept a vigilant eye on changing Hollywood styles and the public tastes that follow, Mr. Crisp discusses both films and stars with his typical panache and dexterity and leads his readers with polite madness to a clear, straightforward moral, proving himself to be an unexpected champion of good sense. Along the way Mr. Crisp shares his personal encounters with the likes of Lillian Gish, John Hurt, David Hockney, Divine, Sting, and Geraldine Page. Prefaced by longer essays on the essence of stardom, the nature of Hollywood, and the deplorable state of that town today, Mr. Crisp's book is a delight to read.
