Im sächsischen Vogtland entwickelte sich seit der Markneukirchener Innungsgründung im Jahre 1677 ein außerordentlich bedeutsames Zentrum des Geigenbaus mit internationaler Ausstrahlung, das - insbesondere hinsichtlich der überlieferten Erzeugnisse - noch ein erhebliches Forschungspotential birgt. Ausführungen zu den konstruktiven und stilistischen Merkmalen historischer vogtländischer Streichinstrumente stehen daher im Mittelpunkt des vorliegenden Konferenzberichtes.Der traditionelle Geigenbau im vogtländisch-westböhmischen Musikwinkel ist bis in das 20. Jahrhundert hinein durch die Bauweise ohne Verwendung einer Form (freies Aufschachteln) gekennzeichnet. Diese Methode war in der Frühzeit der Geigenentwicklung in nahezu allen Regionen Europas verbreitet. Die aus dem ausgehenden 16. Jahrhundert stammenden Streichinstrumente in der Begräbniskapelle des Freiberger Doms, in welchen Kopien italienischer Vorbilder gesehen werden, wurden ebenfalls in der Technik des freien Aufschachtelns gebaut. Weitere Abhandlungen zu diesem Themenkomplex präsentieren Ergebnisse von Untersuchungen erhaltener vogtländischer Instrumente aus mehreren Sammlungen (Leipzig, Markneukirchen, Michaelstein, Nürnberg). Wie die Ausführungen zeigen, spielen bei der Erforschung der Instrumente moderne Methoden wie die Dendrochronologie, die Computertomographie oder vollflächige Holzstärkenmessungen eine immer größere Rolle.Musikalische und klangliche Aspekte kommen in den Beiträgen zur Akustik sowie über den Einsatz der Viola in der Musik bis ca. 1750 zur Sprache.
