Evidentiality and Epistemic Modality: Conceptual and Descriptive Issues presents ground-breaking research on the domains of evidentiality and epistemic modality. This book is a current and comprehensive study that incorporates constructional frameworks to inquire grammatical metaphor of modality (MM) for more adequate description and explanation of grammatical metaphor. It conducts semantic analysis of MM via a refined cognitive model and investigation of its lexicogrammatical forms from corpus-based constructional approach. The result is a reliable and systemic record of MM in real use, coupled with theoretical refinement from a cognitive perspective to illuminate its ¿metaphoricity¿ motivation. The range of featured languages ¿ Arabic, Armenian, Kurdish, Persian and Turkish ¿ include three separate families connected only by geographical proximity, each with an extremely rich literary tradition. The dictionary covers multiple independent phenomena in several unrelated languages, the underlying idea being that their reduplications are all somehow connected, and that there exists a general «field» of reduplication. The book is not limited to a single field, but rather for several largely separate ones, such as linguistic relations, the theory of reduplication and etymology. Several other related or unrelated languages such as Icelandic, Japanese, Egyptian Hieroglyphics, Hittite, etc. have been included for comparative purposes.The preliminary findings of this study indicate that reduplication in the languages under study, and in nearly all other languages, deal mostly with the fundamental, primary human requirements. Another strong proof of the «universality» of reduplicates are that they closely follow the same and similar formation, development and rule in most related and unrelated languages. In consequence of the universality of reduplication and its near identical development in all related or unrelated languages, it even legitimizes the creation of a grammar of reduplication in the future. La obra consta de cuatro partes: en la primera, se exponen los conceptos clave en terminología y ontología y la metodología de elaboración de la término-ontología, la cual se describe pormenorizadamente en la segunda y tercera parte. Tras la formalización ontológica en la cuarta parte, se describe el tránsito del recurso ontológico a un glosario término-ontológico electrónico bilingüe, disponible en línea, que se acompaña. Este glosario basado en corpus está dirigido a profesionales de la navegación, el transporte marítimo y la industria naval, a docentes y estudiantes de titulaciones náuticas, así como a profesionales de las lenguas especializadas (profesores, traductores, intérpretes, redactores técnicos, etc.).

Der vorliegende Band bietet eine systematische Analyse des slowenischen Basiswortschatzes im Hinblick auf die in ihm vorkommenden lexikalischen Entlehnungen. Auf der Grundlage einer Wortliste mit über 1400 Bedeutungen und deren Untergliederung in 24 lexikalisch-semantische Gruppen werden die Gesamtanzahl an Entlehnungen und die thematischen Präferenzzonen für Entlehnungen ermittelt. Die chronologische Einordnung zeigt, dass das maßgebliche Inventar an Entlehnungen bereits in früheren Zeiten übernommen wurde. Im Hinblick auf die Gebersprachen sind keine dominanten Einflüsse nachzuweisen. Aus einer gebrauchsbasierten Perspektive zeigt sich, dass die Entlehnungen eine periphere Rolle einnehmen und hauptsächlich im mittel- und niederfrequenten Bereich zu finden sind. Darüber hinaus ist auch ihr semantisches Potenzial begrenzt.

The key to the phonetic development of a given word across time lies in its accentuation. As the Old Celtic remains do not indicate their accent, it has to be deduced from their sound-changes. This book investigates for the first time in depth 14 Celtic phenomena resulting from the weakening of unstressed syllables (vocalic assimilations and reductions up to syncope, degeminations, ,w'-loss, nasal effacement, metathesis of liquids) and the strengthening of stressed ones (vocalic epenthesis and diphthongizations, geminations of consonants). The stress-patterns emerging from them are corroborated by the originally Celtic toponymy in today's non-Celtic-speaking countries and allow us to reconstruct the Celtic subfamily of languages by drawing a much simpler accentual model which also finds typological support. With its diachronic discussion of more than 3,600 words the book represents, moreover, a big help in the understanding of Celtic lexicon and onomastics.

La présente étude vise à reconstruire l'évolution de la terminologie des fibres textiles en français à partir du XVIIIe siècle jusqüà nos jours, avec une attention particulière à la néologie dans le domaine des fibres chimiques. La recherche s¿inscrit dans le cadre théorique des études de terminologie diachronique menées depuis les années 2010 en Italie dans le but d¿approfondir la relation entre l¿évolution de la terminologie et le développement technique, scientifique et culturel. L¿approche adoptée permet de retracer l'évolution linguistique et conceptuelle du domaine, ainsi que d¿obtenir des informations intéressantes sur l'évolution sociétale et culturelle. Ses applications se trouvent également dans le domaine de l'histoire des sciences, des techniques et de la société.

The fact that English has always borrowed heavily from other languages is well known. However, the systemic long-term effects of the processes involved in such contacts are under-researched. This collection of articles takes a more wide-spanning approach, looking at various periods and phenomena across the centuries. The volume focusses on language contact seen as cultural contact, especially with Scandinavia and France, as well as on specific text types from times ranging from Old English to the twentieth century.The volume aims at advancing insight on the ways in which contacts with other languages and cultures influenced the English language as a whole. The book provides new reflections on borrowing and lexical innovation as cultural choices bound to different textual traditions.

This book contains a selection of papers on issues of current interest in syntax and morpho-syntax. Most topics pertain to the question of the relation between word order and syntactic structure. The discussion starts with a proposal of extending the theory of relativization to reason clauses.
