Après ses études primaires, PEN est admis à l'Institut des Missions Evangéliques (IME) qui deviendra Collège Evangélique de Libamba en 1958. Il y apprend, entre autres, le solfège et l'analyse des versets bibliques avec Rev R. Peirce, alors Directeur de l'IME/CEL et coordinateur de la traduction de la Bible en Bassa du Cameroun, Kaat Nyambe. Après l'obtention du BACCALAUREAT en 1961, PEN fait ses études supérieures à l'Université de Heidelberg (RFA) à l'Ecole d'interprètes et de traducteurs, option enseignement de la langue et culture allemande. PEN étudiera ensuite à l'Université de Strasbourg (France) puis à LAVAL, Québec, Canada, d'où il obtiendra une Licence ès Lettres, une Maîtrise en Didactique des Langues et un Ph.D en Linguistique sous Pr. W.F. Mackey. PEN est assistant de recherche au Centre International de Recherche sur le Bilinguisme (CIRB) et assistant d'enseignement à l'Université Laval (1969-1971); Assistant au Département Allemand, Faculté des Lettres, Universtité de Yaoundé (1972-1975 + 1992-1997); Principal du Collège Evangélique de Libamba (1975-1989), Co-fondateur et premier directeur de CABTA devenu CABTAL (1987-1993); membre de Wycliffe International Board (1984-1993). Fondateur du Sous Comité de Langue Ɓàsàa (SCOBA) à partir de 1995. Co-fondateur et premier Président du Comité de Langue Ɓàsàa (COLƁA) à partir de 1998. Assistant au Département des Langues et Cultures Camerounaises, Ecole Normale Supérieur (ENS), Yaoundé, 2010-2013.

This book explores the uses of translation, translators, and interpreters in fiction as a gateway to introduce issues related to Translation Studies. The volume follows recent scholarship on Transfiction, a term used to describe the portrayal of translation (both a topic and a motif), as well as translators and interpreters in fiction and film. It expands on the research by Kalus Kaindl, Karleheinz Splitzl, Michael Cronin, and Rosemary Arrojo, among others. This book presents a case study on lexical error analysis in the translation products of Arab English majors at the university level with important implications for Arabic-speaking countries. It provides detailed analyses and explanations of the main lexical areas that cause specific difficulties for these students, while also identifying their potential sources. One of the essential pillars of Yiddish literature since its beginnings in the 13th century has been translation. In the 20th century, the desire to belong to world literature stimulated Yiddish intellectuals to translate works of foreign literature into Yiddish - in a brilliant display of literary force. With a focus on Yiddish cultural spaces in the Soviet Union and Poland, the present volume is devoted to the transnational and 'translational' state of Yiddish literature in various places and periods. Alongside reflections on the craft of translation, the volume includes accounts of literary translations and the practices of self-translation and collective, intermedial and cultural translation. Twelve scholarly contributions illuminate the function and meaning of translation for this minority language as a Jewish national language and for Yiddish literature as world literature.

El presente volumen recoge un total de 16 textos que ofrecen nuevas perspectivas en el campo de Traducción y la Interpretación con aportaciones que giran en torno a la lengua española en contraste con otras lenguas como el inglés, el italiano, el chino, el checo o el polaco. Estas propuestas se enmarcan dentro de los estudios de traducción e interpretación jurídica, traducción comercial, traducción técnica, didáctica de la traducción e interpretación, traducción audiovisual o traducción institucional. Con esta obra pretendemos dar a conocer nuevas líneas de investigaciones que ponen el foco en combinaciones lingüísticas que no han sido ampliamente estudiadas en el ámbito hispánico desde una perspectiva traductológica.

Karolina Puchala-Ladzinska discusses the nature of language interpreting. First, she addresses selected theoretical issues related to interpreting and discusses the specifics of the most common types of interpreting. This is followed by an overview of an interpreter's competencies and skills and a chapter on note-taking as an aid to consecutive interpreting. The process of interpreting is presented in detail, the success or failure of which depends largely on the choice of techniques and strategies. This part also addresses the problem of errors in interpreting as well as nonverbal elements and interpreting assessment. Finally, before presenting a selection of practical exercises for interpreting courses, the role of creative thinking in the context of interpreting is discussed.

Linguistic research has always, either explicitly or implicitly, dealt with the interaction of linguistic phenomena and extralinguistic reality. Whether we are talking about targeted analyses of the nature of their interaction or whether this interaction is implied and taken for granted, linguistics has always been interested in its dynamics and manifestations. The Koine Greek particles ¿¿¿¿ and ¿¿¿ have been traditionally translated as either 'behold' or 'lo'. But such mechanical renderings are inadequate as they suggest these particles can be reduced to a single meaning or function. As argued in this monograph, these particles actually have several distinct uses that are conditioned by their linguistic context, and a translator should find natural idioms in the receptor language that match the meaning and function of these Greek uses.Based on a Construction Grammar approach, Bailey's analysis of all 200 New Testament instances of ¿¿¿¿ and 29 instances of ¿¿¿, as well as many from the LXX and extra-biblical materials, differentiates at least five uses. Examples of suitable and unsuitable renderings of the five uses are illustrated from 31 published translations in English and other European languages. The differences in the five uses are reflected most clearly in their functional differences in deixis and information structure. Although the analysis draws on insights from the theories of Construction Grammar and Cognitive Linguistics, familiarity with these theories is unnecessary to benefit from the study. This analysis also serves as a major refinement of the entries of these particles in the standard lexicon, BDAG.Biblical studies scholars, exegetes, Bible translators, students of Koine and Ancient Greek, linguists interested in functional and typological linguistics, pastors, and others will benefit from reading this analysis and following the example of its analytical approach with other elements of the language.

The emergent culture of crime writings in late 19th century colonial Bengal (India) is an interesting testimony to how literature is shaped by various material forces including the market. This book deals with true crime writings of the late 1800s published by 'lowbrow publishing houses' - infamous for publishing 'sensational' and the 'vulgar' literature - which had an avid bhadralok (genteel) readership.The volume focuses on select translations of true crime writings by Bakaullah and Priyanath Mukhopadhyay who worked as darogas (Detective Inspectors) in the police department in mid-late nineteenth century colonised Bengal. These published accounts of cases investigated by them are among the very first manifestations of the crime genre in India. The writings reflect their understandings of criminality and guilt, as well as negotiations with colonial law and policing. Further, through a selection of cases in which women make an appearance either as victims or offenders, (or sometimes as both,) this book sheds light on the hidden gendered experiences of the time, often missing in mainstream Bangla literature.Combining a love for suspense with critical readings of a cultural phenomenon, this book will be of much interest to scholars and researchers of comparative literature, translation studies, gender studies, literary theory, cultural studies, modern history, and lovers of crime fiction from all disciplines.
