A Great Man and His Unheralded AssistantFor some 50 years, Paul Sochaczewski has been on the trail of famous naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace and his little-known assistant Ali.The result of this quest is an imaginative "enhanced biography" of an illiterate 19th-century teenager from Borneo who helped Wallace become one of history's most successful explorers of the natural world. This deliciously speculative book, filled with humor and touching scenes of imagined conversations, takes a hard look at "slippery truth," and, perhaps most important, asks the question: "Is there someone in your life who has quietly helped you, perhaps without adequate recognition, on your journey?"In this innovative approach to biography, you'll discover:New clues that expand our knowledge of Ali's background and careerWhy writing the history of a 19th-century teenage boy from Borneo is so challengingDetails about how Ali collected some 5,000 of Wallace's 8,050 bird specimensImagined conversations that explore emotions and perceptions of Wallace and AliHow each of us has an "Ali" who has helped us along the wayWho's your Ali? Perhaps this book might encourage to reach out to someone forgotten but who eased your path along your journey?

On railways, in hotels, in all-weather situations, in restaurants, and in research institutes. The time period here is at least twenty years ago - so things have changed, and city infrastructures are today totally different. The pictures included are of that time period and today are different. If at all, the pictures represent a snapshot of what it was then.
This volume explores the life histories of a wide range of radical figures whose political activity in relation to the black liberation struggle was catalysed or profoundly shaped by the global impact and legacy of the Russian Revolution of 1917, including C.L.R. This is the story of one person. An errand boy, junior artist, car washer, cub, scout, choirboy, glass runner, wine waiter, postman, tomato plant and faggot stripper, potato picker, life guard, scout leader, canoe instructor, teacher, cattle rancher, polo player, forest and sawmill manager, head of English, logger, general manager, managing director, importer, exporter, businessman, outdoor pursuits instructor, fund raiser, headmaster, principal, CEO, school founder, advisor and appraiser, mentor, model, poet, playwright, writer and actor in the UK and many countries of Central, Southern and Western Africa through good times and bad. The author deals sympathetically with the nostalgia of a post-war childhood in Bristol, detailing with many of the joys and problems of childhood before leaping into adulthood with entertaining narrative and dialogue. Africa takes hold with many incidents and observations backed by humour and acute observations of post-colonial developments. Life was never dull and he has sat on crocodiles and slept with lions as well as experiencing coups and unrest where some humour can still be found. He has met royalty and personalities from a wide mixture of society and has also been a friend of presidents and heads of state - herein lies a tantalising mix of European and African life in a kaleidoscopic presentation of humour, pathos, seriousness and shrewd observation.

Since none in his family's past had that name and considered outside the religious policies how named John? Vagabond or simple prophet people assume, how was he so knowledgeable about correctness and the Hebrew religious practices, why did the Pharisees being Jewish hate him? Why is attaching prophet to him an error? The king and queen were the only ruling party in power What happened to the civil rulers? A reading pleasure, a couple of pastors purchased the material for use in their bible study. ... Pushed by so many people having different concepts challenged his own thinking. I watch from between slats in the wall of our house, shamelessly spying, yet I stare, breathless, and can't turn away. I sear this image into my brain-this moment, so special and beautiful. And so entirely ordinary. -Journal, August 21, 1972This is a book of stories. This is a book of history. This is a book of tradition, drama and mystery. The U.S. Peace Corps provided Dina an avenue out of the only world she had known, and took her into the mountainous regions of the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippine archipelago where she lived among people whose lives were little known beyond their mountain homeland. Dina's stories are crafted from her detailed journals and letters home. The stories re¿ect the culture and lives of the ethnic Manobo people as well as the Philippine towns and cities of the time, including the seismic shifts in national politics and daily lives when the nation's autocratic ruler declared martial law. People here are scared. Rumors are rampant, but facts are few. Stories tangle over time, facts get twisted, and no one actually knows much. You can't be sure of anything until it happens right in front of you, and then it's too late. -Journal, October 3, 1972
Jean Finlayson was a Presbyterian deaconess and nurse, trained in Melbourne, Victoria. She travelled to Oodnadatta in South Australia in 1914 to take up the position of nursing sister for the Australian Inland Mission. Once a replacement was found for her, she set out on the 640km journey by buggy in August 1915. She aided Reverend John Flynn with his Australian Inland Mission. She established herself in a slab cabin called Myrtle Villa, which also became known as 'Sister's Hospital'. As well as attending to the medical needs of anyone within a 150km radius, Jean also conducted Sunday School and the town's first regular (ecumenical) church services. Both were conducted in the Prison Warder's room at the read of the Sturt Town Gaol. This little book was published in 1925 and we have augmented it with other photographs by Rev. Harland who assisted the Mission during World War One.
After losing two yachts, the first off the coast of Africa and the second on a reef in New Guinea, many friends encouraged Jan and John to write a book of their adventures. So they have ...However, the loss of two boats was only a small part of their adventurous life story.John first met Jan in 1966, when John was building a trimaran, with the intent of sailing it back to England. The boat was only 29-feet long and, unfortunately, he was unable to entice Jan to join him on that adventure. So, to John's dismay they parted company after sixteen months and went their own ways for nearly eight years.John was building the Heart of Edna, a 50-foot ketch, with his brother David, when Jan turned up unexpectedly one day with her parent, who had agreed to drive her in search of John. Jan had been living in Melbourne for five years and had heard of John's exploits. Soon their relationship was all on again - John was chuffed! They chartered the 50-foot ketch for nearly four years before her loss. After building Tafua, they chartered in Northern Queensland before returning to the Western Pacific. It was exciting times for Jan and John, and their new daughter, Kelly. However, it was clear they wouldn't continue to take Kelly out of school, so their next big move was to increase the size of Tafua from a 60-footer to a 70-footer, thereby tripling the number of guests they could have on board on Sydney Harbour. It was a great move, setting the way for a prosperous future.Over the next few years they built three more sailing catamarans ranging from 90 to 100 feet, which also became extremely successful on the harbour. In 1997, they were made an offer for Sail Venture Cruises (their company). It was an offer they couldn't refuse. That started another challenge, which was to be their last, the building and running of a five-star lodge in the Gold Coast Hinterland, Queensland. In 2014, they finally sold their beautiful lodge and bought a home in Newport on Pittwater, New South Wales, where they live happily to this day.
This charming little story breaks the autobiography mold. Technically it's the childhood account of a third-culture American kid and his adventures and exploits growing up all over the world in the 1950s and '60s. The book will transport you from Australia to Africa, from Brazil to Israel, from Europe to the Far East. But it's not just a travelogue or a dry where-I-was-born sleeper. It's part adventure--it's about surfing in Africa and sailing in Rio de Janeiro. It's a Buddhist parable about the responsibilities of power and African lessons about the power of belief. It's a childhood love story. It's a new perspective on the evils of apartheid and the oppression that took its place and that still mars the beauty of a magnificent country. It's a story of cultures and geopolitics. It's the backstory about how a few courageous Norwegians defeated Nazi plans for a German atom bomb. It's part the rant of a funny, irreverent, iconoclastic, opinionated old curmudgeon, perhaps occasionally thought-provoking. It's a window into the insights that wide travels and an open mind can bring. It's also a story about family and the importance of real family values and of developing a sense of place in the world. The book is interlaced with stories and anecdotes about the author's own forebears and pioneer ancestors and the roles they played in shaping the expansion and development of the American West. It's a little known slice of Texas history and of the founding of places like Dallas and Fort Worth. It's a story of lone-star gypsies that will give you new perspectives on life and death, how to live it to the fullest, and maybe even how to avoid fearing the mysteries at the end of one's existence.
This book serves as a prequel to the Decade of Development. Set in a similar writing style, however, delving deeper into situations that lead to the need for an entire Decade of Development. Somewhat of an origin story, so to speak. This narrative also follows are a variety of timelines as well, with certain chapters serving as substories and mini-bios, and not to mention the beginning of a dual persona and the rise of a company/entity in it's early stages.
Surviving Childhood Pain is the inspiring story of a spunky child of God who navigated a difficult childhood through her abiding faith in the Lord. The young girl saw her single mother struggling to provide for three children and prayed to find a way to help her hard working mother ease her struggle. This young girl was convinced that if she could live with her father, then her mother's life would be easier. But she knew it would take an act of God for her mother to let her go live with her father. God grants her prayer, and she goes to live with her father; however, she is unaware of the hardships she would have to endure while living with him in a crowded two bedroom home where there was no love for her, except from her father and my cousin Derrick. The difficulties she encounters while living with him cause her to lean heavily on God and His promises. Her faith is challenged as she endures hardships and losses, but she hangs on to the everlasting love of God. She holds steadfast to her decision to make her mother's life easier regardless of the sacrifices she has to make. These experiences tested her faith in God, but she came to terms with the hand she was dealt with remarkable courage and strength. Despite the hardships and tragic losses, God provided support from unexpected sources that allowed her to transform her life and achieve amazing accomplishments. The book is reminiscent of Gordon Park's "Flavio's Home" and Langston Hughes' "Salvation," which you will not want to put down till the story ends.
Where the f**k is Blönduós? is both a triumph of travel writing and a masterpiece of memoir. It deserves a space on every bookcase and in every suitcase. Richard Moriarty - The Sun. Having survived a terrifying burglary, Emma had reached a point in life where she feared being awake and dreaded falling asleep. She grabbed her late mother's notebooks, packed her car with warm clothes, a swimsuit that had seen better days, a set of winter tyres and a brand new tent, and caught a ferry to Iceland. Surtsey was an unexpected eruption - just as my own birth was unplanned and something of an interruption. So captivated by the magic of Iceland, our mother returned home with a bar of Toblerone for each of us. There were no hugs or questions as to our welfare. My sisters and I had been alone for three weeks. I was almost 5 years old. Inspired by a six-month journey to Iceland in wintertime, "Where the f**k is Blönduós?" is moving, honest, and entertaining. Why would a middle-aged woman choose to spend a winter alone in the far north of Iceland? It's a fair question, though the answer isn't quite so straightforward. I dreamed of lying on a blanket gazing up into the night sky, holding my breath in anticipation of the colourful aurora that may soon dance overhead, without being asked, "Will you be long?" By battling the elements, conquering her fears, and learning to knit, all under the watchful gaze of the small community, Emma made sense of the past, found peace with the present, and felt strong enough to deal with the future. Authentic, gripping, and as vivid as a cold winter's night, this inspirational Icelandic adventure will take you on an unforgettable journey of discovery and healing. Chris Riches - Daily Express
