    Essay from the year 2020 in the subject Literature - Comparative Literature, , language: English, abstract: About 8000 words in length the essay is a critical study of and an introduction to some of Andreas Gryphius' sonnets about the terrors on war in English translation. It considers whether it is worthwhile reading Gryphius, who is barely known among English speakers, in English at all and if so why? That question is explored with reference both to current wars in the Middle East and to ancient Greek tragedy, notably the role of Cassandra.Some emphasis lies on the Shakespearean quality of Gryphius' sonnets. Gryphius' poem Freystadt is compared with Satire III by John Donne, the leading English Metaphysical poet one generation ahead of Gryphius.Whereas Donne finds refuge in his Faith, Gryphius, after all the horrors he witnessed and recorded struggles to do so, finally appearing to lose security within his Faith before coming to a point of inner decisiveness and obduracy which makes him go on to work at peace. His war poetry is at is full of distaste and recoil but it is above all intense protest building on the belief in a readership which affected by his abhorrence, will join in his rejection of the atrocities and dehumanization of individuals in war.

    Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, language: English, abstract: Sleep is a prevalent motif in poetry. As a universal topic, sleep ¿ or sleeplessness ¿ has an impact on everyone.1 For this reason, many poets not only of the Renaissance dedicated the sonnets to their beloved to sleep. The aim of this seminar paper is to make transparent, how sleep is depicted in two different Renaissance sonnets. The sequence of sonnets to Delia by Samuel Daniel contains the poem Care-charmer Sleepe. Another poem, Come sleepe, o sleepe from the sequence Astrophil and Stella by Sir Philip Sidney, is also concerned with this topic. For this seminar paper, it is of great interest to examine in how far the illustrations of sleep in these two poems differ from each other or reveal similarities. This subject is of particular significance, as the two sonnet sequences have been written in about the same time, in the end of the sixteenth century, so that a comparison of the depictions of sleep is profitable. In the beginning, Sir Philip Sidney¿s sonnet is presented and investigated with regard to its depiction of sleep. The different techniques of figuration to achieve the illustration of sleep in the way the poem presents it are taken into account. Therefore, it will be revealed by which means sleep is pictured in this specific sonnet. Subsequently, the second poem by Samuel Daniel is looked at. It will be focused on the approach which the speaker in this sonnet takes to depict an image of sleep. By means of this, different aspects of illustrating sleep and techniques of achieving the result which is presented in the sonnets are emphasized and can therefore be compared in a following chapter.Research literature related to sleep as a motif in poetry and especially with regard to the two selected poems is rare. The field of research is a rather unexamined realm. Therefore, not many secondary literature can be consulted to support the findings of this seminar paper. Nevertheless, excerpts from Ruth F. Clancy¿s Thematic Guide to British Poetry can contribute to the argumentation of this term paper, because they comprise the motif of sleep with regard to different poems, among others also Sir Philip Sidney¿s and Samuel Daniel¿s sonnets, which build the core of this seminar paper. But this work remains one of the scarce sources in this field of research.

Given the fact that Shakespeare¿s prose occurs both in his comedies, tragedies and histories and prose is being used in his plays by characters of different social ranks the question is to be asked which various functions prose as a medium fulfils in relationship to such other functions as setting, dialogue, action and theme. According to Brian Vickers Elizabethan audiences must have been aware of the alternation of prose and verse. It can be assumed that any deviation from the norm which was blank verse was a) felt by attentive audiences and b) had an impact on the way actors behaved on the stage. In the following essay I shall employ the critical method devised by Vickers in his book ¿The Artistry of Shakespeare¿s Prose¿. First, I shall be dealing with different forms of Shakespearean imagery. For the sake of convenience, I am making use of the categories suggested by Vickers. Second, I am trying to find examples showing those recurrent Shakespearean devices which have a determinant influence on what Vickers calls ¿the linguistic structure¿. These devices include features like repartee, equivocation, comic logic; malapropism, repetition; foreign and regional English; unusual syntax; fondness for proverbs; word play and punning. Third, I shall prove that Shakespeare made frequent use of various rhetorical figures.

They, being forced to journey to the Americas, must have had to endure and process many cultural conflicts. The journey's impact will provide the basis to investigate on a possible double identity being created by the slaves to arrange with their new culture, as well as with their cultural heritage. Olaudah Equianös The Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, the African will serve as an important resource for this purpose. To begin, the European culture in the 18th century will be looked at. Especially the European attitude towards other cultures will be of interest. Afterwards it will be set into contrast with the culture of the African tribes. A special account will be taken to compare historical data to Olaudah Equianös descriptions of Igbo culture and the theme of culture clash will be examined. Included in this, the phases of culture shock will be explained. In the following section, I will look at cultural similarities between British and African societies, based on accounts of Equianös Interesting Narrative. Evidence of his assimilation to European culture will be used when attempting to demonstrate his European identity. Having clarified this, a closer look will be taken at how culture and identity are connected. Following that, an attempt will be made to explain the creation of identity. Focusing on Equiano, the circumstances of developing a double identity will be investigated. Finally, Equianös case will be used to explain the progress and stages of double identity throughout his life.Of course, it is arguable, whether Equiano actually came from Africa or was born in the Americas. However, this is no matter of investigation in the present paper. Nevertheless, it shall be considered by the reader. Still, in this paper Equianös report of African life shall be taken as it is. For the purpose of exploring his historical accuracy, I have added the historical account of African nations to either verify or disprove his observations. Disregarding of how accurate Equianös historical insides will be, his report unquestionably reveals the effects of cross- cultural encounters on the individual¿s identity.

Focussing on Alexander Pope's "Dunciad"s and a wide selection of Lord Byron's poems, Lahrsow shows that literary self-annotations rarely just explain a text.
