Bøger om høflighed hører til de mest populære udgivelser i Frankrig på enevældens tid. De fleste er skrevet som dialoger, breve eller essays, der forsøger at besvare et påtrængende spørgsmål om den korrekte adfærd ved hoffet og i salonerne. Hvordan behager man ved kongens hof? Hvordan bidrager man til den selskabelige munterhed? Hvordan konverserer man?Michael Høxbro Andersen argumenterer for, at disse bøger må læses som et væsentligt indslag i en generel afpolitiseringsproces på enevældens tid. De formede forestillingen om adelsmanden som den fuldendte undersåt, og de var med til at skabe en apolitisk og mondæn offentlighed. Dermed har de præget fransk kultur og litteratur helt frem til i dag.Kunsten at konversere analyserer den franske konversationskunsts lange historie fra dens begyndelse i renæssancen og frem til oplysningsfilosoffernes kritik af den i det 18. århundrede. Bogen indeholder kapitler, der behandler både Michel de Montaigne, Madame de Scudéry, La Rochefoucauld, Jean-Jacques Rousseau og Denis Diderot, men også i dag næsten glemte forfattere som Chevalier de Méré.Michael Høxbro er er lektor på Institut for Engelsk, Romansk og Germansk på Københavns Universitet. Han har publiceret artikler og bøger om både ældre og nyere fransk kultur og litteratur.

Hornbæk har dannet ramme om mange store kunstneriske og litterære bedrifter, og i mange år flokkedes kunstnere og forfattere til den skønne nordsjællandske by. Kai Flor fortæller Hornbæks kulturhistorie, fra da kammerråd Ove Malling for første gang nævner den i sin bog "Store og gode handlinger af danske, norske og holstenere" i 1777, til P.S. Krøyer erobrede byen sammen med en gruppe andre kunstnere, og Holger Drachmann drog inspiration fra den gamle stad.Kai Flor (1886-1965) var dansk forfatter, oversætter og musik- og kunstkritiker. Flors forfatterskab omfatter bl.a. bøger om kunst, musik, poesi og arkitektur, men han er bedst kendt for sine håndbøger om klassisk musik. Som oversætter har han bl.a. oversat Vincent van Goghs breve, Darwins udødelige Tanker, Gullivers Rejse og Skatte-øen til dansk. Kai Flor var Ridder af Dannebrog.

Prosaen er blevet kaldt den moderne litteraturs maskinrum, fordi den breder litteraturens virkefelt ud. Inden for nyere prosateori beskrives prosaen som verdensvendt, rummelig, operativ, genreoverskridende, virkelighedsudvidende og hybrid.Antologiens bidrag indeholder grundlæggende refleksioner over prosaen i en modernistisk kontekst og over dens forhold til lyrik og poesi. Det geografiske perspektiv i romaner og essays har særlig bevågenhed blandt bidragsyderne og kobles til en ekspanderende kontekst af opdagelsesrejser, kolonisering og globalisering og de dermed forbundne kulturmøder. I denne henseende repræsenterer bidragene et bredt udsnit af ældre og nyere, store og små litterære geografier i og uden for Europa. Prosaen spiller fint sammen med den opprioritering af sted og rum, som vi har set vokse frem inden for de senere årtiers litteratur og forskning i litteratur.Med denne antologi stiger vi ombord for at nærme os prosaens radierende felter. Der er undervejs stoppesteder i Island, Færøerne, Danmark, Norge, Sverige, Italien og Nord- og Sydamerika. Prosaen selv ser ud til at være ustoppelig.

Der vorliegende Band präsentiert die Ergebnisse der Abschlusstagung ,Von Neuem', die die DFG-Forschungsgruppe 2305 ,Diskursivierungen von Neuem. Tradition und Novation in Texten und Bildern des Mittelalters und der Frühen Neuzeit' im Juni 2022 an der Freien Universität abgehalten hat. Die Gruppe hat seit 2016 Artefakte innerhalb der genannten Epochengrenzen auf das komplexe Verhältnis hin untersucht, das ,alte' und ,neue' Elemente und Dimensionen in ihnen einnehmen, und in einer dynamischen Relation solcher Elemente die Spezifik literarischer und künstlerischer Praxis und Produktion ausgemacht. Zur Abschlusstagung waren ausgewiesene Expert:innen aus der germanistischen Mediävistik und Frühneuzeitforschung, aus der Romanistik, der Neueren Geschichte und Kunstgeschichte eingeladen, einschlägige Forschungsfragen ,von Neuem' zu debattieren und eigene Perspektiven aus aktueller Arbeit einzubringen. Der Band bietet ein breites Panorama grundlegender Untersuchungen zu literarischen, philosophischen und bildkünstlerischen Novationsdynamiken zwischen dem 13. und dem 18. Jahrhundert.

The Citizen of the World is a highly readable yet deceptively sophisticated text, using the popular eighteenth-century device of the imaginary observer. Its main narrator, the Chinese philosopher Lien Chi Altangi, draws on traditional ideas of Confucian wisdom as he tries (and sometimes fails) to come to terms with the commercial modernity and spectacle of imperial London. Goldsmith explores a moment of economic and social transformation in Britain and at the same time engages with the ramifications of a global conflict, the Seven Years' War (1756-63). He also uses his travelling Chinese narrator as a way of indirectly addressing his own predicament as an Irish exile in London. This edition provides a reliable, authoritative text, records the history of its production, and includes an introduction and explanatory notes which situate this enormously rich work within the political debates and cultural conflicts of its time, illuminating its allusiveness and intellectual ambition.

In requiring artificial light, the early modern indoor theatre had to interrupt the action so that the candles could be attended to, if necessary. This Element explores how the interval affected composition and stagecraft and how amphitheatre plays were converted for indoor performance (and vice versa).

Reinhart Koselleck concepisce la "Sattelzeit" come quel periodo storico compreso tra il 1750 e il 1850 che, trasformando il futuro nel luogo del progresso illimitato, segna definitivamente l¿avvento della Modernità. Lo studio di Richard Häni dimostra che nel mondo culturale questa trasformazione si realizza nell¿attuale penisola italiana al più tardi a partire dal Cinquecento. L¿autore, andando alla ricerca dei presupposti culturali della "Sattelzeit" koselleckiana, illustra in che modo Sperone Speroni, Benedetto Varchi, Giorgio Vasari e Giambattista Vico interpretarono la propria modernità, come essi percepirono l'antichità classica e più in generale in che modo intesero il rapporto fra antichi e moderni in relazione al progresso e al futuro delle arti, della letteratura e della filosofia italiana.

This book considers Samuel Taylor Coleridge¿s engagement with ¿Whig poetry¿: a tradition of verse from the eighteenth century which celebrated the political and constitutional arrangements of Britain as guaranteeing liberty. It argues that, during the 1790s, Coleridge was able to articulate radical ideas under the cover of widely accepted principles through his references to this poetry. He positioned his poetry within a mainstream discourse, even as he favoured radical social change. Jacob Lloyd argues that the poets Mark Akenside, William Lisle Bowles, and William Cowper each provided Coleridge with a kind of Whig poetics to which he responded. When these references are understood, much of Coleridge¿s work which seems purely personal or imaginative gains a political dimension. In addition, Lloyd reassess Coleridge¿s relationship with Thomas Percy¿s Reliques of Ancient English Poetry, to provide an original, political reading of ¿The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere¿. This book revises our understanding of the political and poetic development of a major poet and, in doing so, provides a new model for the origins of British Romanticism more broadly

This Element turns to the stage to ask a simple question about gender and affect: what causes the shame of the early modern rape victim? Beneath honour codes and problematic assumptions about consent, the answer lies in affect, disgust. It explores both the textual "performance" of affect, how literary language works to evoke emotions and the ways disgust can work in theatrical performance. Here Shakespeare's poem The Rape of Lucrece is the classic paradigm of sexual pollution and shame, where disgust's irrational logic of contamination leaves the raped wife in a permanent state of uncleanness that spreads from body to soul. Staging Disgust offers alternatives to this depressing trajectory: Middleton's Women Beware Women and Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus perform disgust with a difference, deploying the audience's revulsion to challenge the assumption that a raped woman should "naturally" feel intolerable shame.

Die vorliegende Studie verbindet erstmals die Entwicklung der utopischen Literatur der Jahre 1720-1820 nicht nur mit derjenigen des praktisch-philosophischen Denkens dieser Zeit, sondern setzt beide auch in Verbindung mit einem dritten, romanpoetologischen Diskurs: der pragmatischen Geschichte. Im 18. Jahrhundert durchläuft das utopische Denken eine wichtige Veränderung: Während Utopien im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert den Zustand des vollkommenen Menschen und seiner idealen Gesellschaft vorstellten, interessieren sie sich nun verstärkt für die Entwicklung, die der Mensch von seinem jetzigen unvollkommenen hin zu jenem vollkommenen Zustand nehmen muss, und für die Möglichkeiten, die er von Natur aus hierfür mitbringt. Diese in der Forschung als Dynamisierung und Subjektivierung der Utopie bekannt gewordene Gattungsentwicklung geht einher mit dem zeitgleichen Trend zu einer verstärkt anthropologischen und psychologischen Grundlagentheorie in der Moral- und Rechtsphilosophie sowie der Ästhetik. Vom Naturzustand zum Idealzustand: Diese Perspektive erfordert schließlich auch eine erzählerische Innovation, welche die Zeitgenossen unter dem Rubrum Historia Pragmatica fassen. Das ursprünglich aus der Historiographie stammende und über die Philologie und Moralphilosophie in die Romanpoetik übergegangene Paradigma pragmatischer Geschichte fühlt sich einem anthropologischen Realitätssinn ebenso verpflichtet wie einem moralischen Vervollkommnungsideal, liefert damit eine bestimmte Legitimation der Fiktion und bildet das Fundament für jene charakteristische Erneuerung der Utopie, wie sie bis in die Romantik wirkt.

This book explores how two early modern and two modern Japanese writers - Yosa Buson (1716-83), Ema Saiko (1787-1861), Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902), and Natsume Soseki (1867-1916) - experimented with the poetic artifice afforded by the East Asian literati (bunjin) tradition, a repertoire of Chinese and Japanese poetry and painting. Their experiments generated a poetics of irony that transformed the lineaments of lyric expression in literati culture and advanced the emergence of modern prose poetry in Japanese literature. Through rigorous close readings, this study changes our understanding of the relationship between lyric form and the representation of self, sense, and feeling in Japanese poetic writing from the late eighteenth through the early twentieth century. The book aims to reach a broad audience, including specialists in East Asian Studies, Anglophone literary studies, and Comparative Literature. 

This book reinterprets British dramas of the early-nineteenth century through the lens of the star actors for whom they were written. Unlike most playwrights of previous generations, the writers of British Romantic dramas generally did not work in the theatre themselves. However, they closely followed the careers of star performers. Even when they did not directly know actors, they had what media theorists have dubbed "e;para-social interactions"e; with those stars, interacting with them through the mediation of mass communication, whether as audience members, newspaper and memoir readers, or consumers of prints, porcelain miniatures, and other manifestations of "e;fan"e; culture. This study takes an in-depth look at four pairs of performers and playwrights: Sarah Siddons and Joanna Baillie, Julia Glover and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Edmund Kean and Lord Byron, and Eliza O'Neill and Percy Bysshe Shelley. These charismatic performers, knowingly or not, helped to guide the development of a character-based theatre-from the emotion-dominated plays made popular by Baillie to the pinnacle of Romantic drama under Shelley. They shepherded in a new style of writing that had verbal sophistication and engaged meaningfully with the moral issues of the day. They helped to create not just new modes of acting, but new ways of writing that could make use of their extraordinary talents.

This book makes connections between selfhood, reading practice and moral judgment which propose fresh insights into Austen's narrative style and offer new ways of reading her work. It grounds her writing in the Enlightenment philosophy of selfhood, exploring how Austen takes five major components of selfhood theory-memory, imagination, probability, sympathy and reflection-and investigates their relation to self-formation and moral judgement. At the same time, Austen's narrative style breaks new ground in the representation of consciousness and engages directly with contemporary concerns about reading practice. Drawing analogies between reading text and reading character, the book argues that Austen's rendering of reading and rereading as both reflective and constitutive acts demonstrates their capacity to enable self-recognition and self-formation. It shows how Austen raises questions about the potential for different readings and, in so doing, challenges her readers to reflect on and reread their own interactions with her texts.

Ausgehend von Erkenntnissen über das Römische Haus im Weimarer Park geht die Arbeit der Frage nach, inwiefern Goethes Baupraxis in einem freimaurerischen Bezugsrahmen steht. Über den gleichen Ansatz wird das «Märchen» von 1795 erschlossen. Die Studie untersucht Motivik und Figurenrepertoire dieser Erzählung und erklärt den ihnen unterlegten maurerischen Sinn aus einschlägigen Lebensmomenten des Dichters. Erweiternd untersucht die Verfasserin Goethes Rezeption der «Falkennovelle» von Giovanni Boccaccio. Da Goethes Rückgriff eine Reminiszenz seiner Begegnung mit Lili Schönemann enthält, kann er als Zeugnis der dichterischen Verarbeitung seines Bruchs mit der Verlobten aus der Frankfurter Jugendzeit gelten. Der Text des «Märchens» gewinnt dadurch eine bislang ungekannte Plausibilität im Kontext der von Goethe geleiteten Weimarer Bauprojekte.

This book examines the difficult relationship between individual intellectual freedom and the legal structures which govern human societies in William Blake¿s works, showing that this tension carries a political urgency that has not yet been recognised by scholars in the field. In doing so, it offers a new approach to Blake¿s corpus that builds on the literary and cultural historical work of recent decades. Blake¿s pronouncements about law may often sound biblical in tone; but this book argues that they directly address (and are informed by) eighteenth-century legal debates concerning the origin of the English common law, the autonomy of the judicature, the increasing legislative role of Parliament, and the emergence of the notions of constitutionalism and natural rights. Through a study of his illuminated books, manuscript works, notebook drafts and annotations, this study considers Blake¿s understanding that law is both integral to humanity itself and a core component of its potential fulfilment of the ¿Human Form Divine¿.

This book argues that close readings of Shakespeare's early English History plays informed by the Italian 'politic histories' of the early modern period, that sought to explore the machinations of power politics in governance and in the shaping of historical events; will greatly aid our understanding of the 'politic' qualities dramatized

Active approaches to teaching Shakespeare are growing in popularity, seen not only as enjoyable and accessible, but as an egalitarian and progressive teaching practice. A growing body of resources supports this work in classrooms. Yet critiques of these approaches argue they are not rigorous and do little to challenge the conservative status quo around Shakespeare. Meanwhile, Shakespeare scholarship more broadly is increasingly recognising the role of critical pedagogy, particularly feminist and decolonising approaches, and asks how best to teach Shakespeare within twenty-first century understandings of cultural value and social justice. Via vignettes of schools' participation in Coram Shakespeare School Foundation's festival, this Element draws on critical theories of education, play and identity to argue active Shakespeare teaching is a playful co-construction with learners and holds rich potential towards furthering social justice-oriented approaches to teaching the plays.
