Modern bookbindings: Their design and decoration, a classical book, has been considered important throughout the human history, and so that this work is never forgotten we at Alpha Editions have made efforts in its preservation by republishing this book in a modern format for present and future generations. This whole book has been reformatted, retyped and designed. These books are not made of scanned copies of their original work and hence the text is clear and readable.

The Himalaya is the new folded mountain system ¿ the tallest and the youngest in the world. It has a rich diversity ¿ natural and cultural, and diversity in all walks of life. Most of its uniqueness is unknown because of its remoteness. Even, the native people are not aware of them. This book aims to describe the uniqueness of the Central Himalaya in terms of its natural and cultural diversity in detail. Supported by original figures and primary data, this book is empirically tested. It is mainly based on observation and participation and the use of a qualitative approach. Although lots of work has been carried out on the various aspects of the Himalayan region yet, a detailed description of the natural and cultural diversity is yet to be done. This book steps forward to elaborate on some of the unique natural and cultural features of the Central Himalaya, which are worthy to be known about. It contains a total of 10 chapters. Four chapters are devoted to natural diversity and fourchapters comprise cultural diversity. Besides, the introduction and conclusions are the first and the last chapters of the book, respectively. The book is the first of its kind and will be useful to all stakeholders ¿ students of all standards, research scholars, academicians, policymakers, native people, tourists, and the general public.

This book traces the transformation of history from a Romantic literary pursuit into a modern academic discipline during the second half of the nineteenth century, and shows how this change inspired Victorians to reconsider what it meant to be a historian. This reconceptualization of the ¿historian¿ lies at the heart of this book as it explores how historians strove to forge themselves a collective scholarly persona that reflected and legitimised their new disciplinary status and gave them authority to speak on behalf of the past. The author argues that historians used the persona as a replacement for missing institutional structures, and converted book parts to a sphere where they could mould and perform their persona. By ascribing agency to titles, footnotes, running heads, typography, cover design, size, and other paratexts, the book makes an important shift in the way we perceive the formation of modern disciplines. By combining the persona and paratexts, it offers a novel approach to themes that have enjoyed great interest in the history of science. It examines, for example, the role which epistemic and moral virtues held in the Victorian society and scholarly culture, the social organization and hierarchies of scholarly communities, the management of scholarly reputations, the commercialization of knowledge, and the relationship between the persona and the underpinning social, political, economic, and cultural structures and hierarchies. Making a significant contribution to persona studies, it provides new insights for scholars interested in the history of humanities, science, and knowledge; book history; and Victorian culture.

¿Das essential gibt Bachelor- und Masterstudierenden der Natur- und Ingenieurwissenschaften eine kompakte Einführung in die Mathematik der partiellen Differentialgleichungen. Im Fokus stehen dabei explizite Lösungsmethoden für die drei wichtigsten Grundtypen linearer partieller Differentialgleichungen: Laplacegleichung, Wärmeleitungsgleichung und Wellengleichung. Diese werden aus dem jeweiligen physikalischen Kontext motiviert. Es werden Lösungsverfahren für eine Reihe von typischen Anfangs- und Randwertaufgaben vorgestellt. Die diesen zugrundeliegenden analytischen Methoden, u.a. Fourierreihen und die Fouriertransformation, werden in einem eigenen Kapitel in knapper Form zusammengefasst.

The handbook by Loretta Würtenberger presents the possible legal framework, appropriate financing models, as well as the proper handling of the market, museums, and academia. This book critically analyses the relationships between intangible cultural heritage (ICH), sustainable development and intellectual property rights (IPRs). The author argues that although the use of IPRs to safeguard ICH presents challenges and has impeded sustainable development in some cases, the adoption of these rights on ICH also presents opportunities and, fundamentally, is not contrary to the spirit of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (UNESCO 2003 Convention). The adoption of IPRs on ICH can form an important part of the development of sustainable safeguarding plans capable of benefitting the communities, groups and individuals (CGIs) that create, maintain and transmit such heritage. The book provides a nuanced analysis of the relationship between intellectual property (IP) law and ICH as well as examining the role of IPRs in safeguarding ICH through the lens of sustainable development. It analyses the relationship between IP law and ICH from environmental, social and economic perspectives. These perspectives allow a thorough evaluation of both the positive effects and potential pitfalls of adopting IPRs to safeguard ICH. The book addresses deeper structural matters that refer back to the safeguarding of social and environmental processes underlying ICH.

This book explores the latest advances in the field of building management. Several chapters use new technologies such as the BIM methodology for collecting life cycle information and managing the maintenance of existing buildings, sharing valid historical and architectural heritage data, energy analysis of building envelopes, and planning new buildings or sustainable building practices. In addition, other tools are presented that focus on improving access to BIM information, open-source governance, mobile applications to accelerate information transfer, the use of blockchain, lean design methods, and open-source software to solve critical path problems. Some contributions feature the assessment of occupational risks in construction, as it is necessary to plan preventive measures based on risk assessments integrated throughout the construction process, which is another important element for the management of this sector.

"Perry T. Rathbone was one of the leading American art museum directors of the twentieth century. Over the course of his thirty two year career at the St. Louis Art Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, he kept a journal. These are his unguarded and spontaneous expressions, not meant for publication-at least not in his lifetime. Alone in his study at the end of a day, Perry T. Rathbone wrote in a large, unlined sketchbook, unloading whatever was fresh on his mind. Whether a meeting at the museum, a business trip, or a party he had just returned from, he wrote about whom he met, what he thought of them, the ambiance, the conversation, the art, the wine, and the food. Rathbone's journals provide a window onto an era of seismic cultural change seen through the eyes of an art czar and a tastemaker. There are meetings with artists such as William de Kooning, Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth, Isamu Noguchi, and Alexander Calder, men of letters such as T.S. Eliot and Aldous Huxley. There are observations of the collectors he courted, entertained, and forbore, such as Peggy Guggenheim and Joseph Pulitzer, and of the eccentric Boston Brahmin families with historic ties to the MFA-the Lowells, Lambs, Warrens, Coolidges, and Codmans. And of course he writes of the thrill of assisting Jaqueline Kennedy in the early 1960s with loans from the MFA to adorn the private quarters in the White House. In the Company of Art includes journal entries from the end of Rathbone's time as director of the St. Louis Art Museum in the early 1950s, through is seventeen years at the MFA in Boston, and beyond into the 1970s. The greatest concentration of entries focuses on the 1960s, during the banner years of Rathbone's directorship of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, as he began to enjoy the rewards of his achievements at the museum with new acquisitions, renovated galleries, rising attendance and membership. Mit diesem Anspruch der Teilhabe wie auch der Nachhaltigkeit treten Bibliotheken für demokratische Werte ein, die in Deutschland im Grundgesetz verankert sind. Auf dieser Grundlage stellen sich für Bibliotheken politische Fragen und Herausforderungen, die im Rahmen ihres gesellschaftlichen Auftrags stehen. Dabei geht es um folgende Themenfelder: Mission der Bibliotheken in der Demokratie; Demokratieförderung in Bibliotheken; Politische Bildung in Bibliotheken einschl. Maßnahmen; Bildungspolitische Initiativen in Bibliotheken; Kulturpolitik in Bibliotheken. Dies gilt für Öffentliche und Wissenschaftliche Bibliotheken und erklärt ihr umfassendes Aufgaben- und Leistungsspektrum, das weit über Informations- und Medienversorgung hinausgeht. Displays of Jewish ritual objects in public, non-Jewish settings by Jews are a comparatively re-cent phenomenon. So too is the establishment of Jewish museums. This volume explores the origins of the Jewish Museum of New York and its evolution from collecting and displaying Jewish ritual objects, to Jewish art, to exhibiting avant-garde art devoid of Jewish content, created by non-Jews. Established within a rabbinic seminary, the museum's formation and development reflect changes in Jewish society over the twentieth century as it grappled with choices between religion and secularism, particularism and universalism, and ethnic pride and assimilation.

The successful transmediation of books and documents through digitization requires the synergetic partnership of many professional figures, that have what may sometimes appear as contrasting goals at heart. On one side, there are those who look after the physical objects and strive to preserve them for future generations, and on the other those involved in the digitization of the objects, the information that they contain, and the management of the digital data. These complementary activities are generally considered as separate and when the current literature addresses both fields, it does so strictly within technical reports and guidelines, concentrating on procedures and optimal workflow, standards, and technical metadata. In particular, more often than not, conservation is presented as ancillary to digitization, with the role of the conservator restricted to the preparation of items for scanning, with no input into the digital product, leading to misunderstanding and clashes of interests. Surveying a variety of projects and approaches to the challenging conservation-digitization balance and fostering a dialogue amongst practitioners, this book aims at demonstrating that a dialogue between apparently contrasting fields not only is possible, but it is in fact desirable and fruitful. Only through the synergetic collaboration of all people involved in the digitization process, conservators included, can cultural digital objects that represent more fully the original objects and their materiality be generated, encouraging and enabling new research and widening the horizons of scholarship.

Despite its many benefits, religion can be a source of internal struggle. God seems to be distant or punishing. People feel anger toward God in the face of life events, particularly experiences connected with suffering, injustice, and personal disappointments. The study focuses on three types of religious struggle: guilt and fear of not being forgiven by God, negative emotions toward God, and negative social interactions related to religion. The study examines the predictors and consequences of struggle in the context of psychological well-being. The following issues are addressed: dependence of struggle from personality traits, parental attitudes, humility, and religiosity, relationships of struggles with the indicators of wellbeing in the general population, and people coping with stress.

This book analyzes the role of integrated spatial planning in constructing eco-sustainable urban housing in post-conflict scenarios and investigates two different spaces in an emergency: Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan and Damascus city in Syria. This book shares timely and thought-provoking methodological and theoretical approaches from perspectives concerning landscape, gender, cognition, neural networks, material culture and ontology in order to comprehend rock art's role in memorisation processes, collective memory, and the intergenerational circulation of knowledge. The case studies offered here stem from human experiences from around the globe-Africa, Australia, Europe, North and South America-, which reflects the authors' diverse interpretative stances. While some of the approaches deal with mnemonics, new digital technologies and statistical analysis, others examine performances, sensory engagement, language, and political disputes, giving the reader a comprehensive view of the myriad connections between memory studies and rock art. Indigenous interlocutors participate as collaborators and authors, creating space for Indigenous narratives of memory. These narratives merge with Western versions of past and recent memories in order to construct jointly novel inter-epistemic understandings of images made on rock. Each chapter demonstrates the commitment of rock art studies to strengthen and enrich the field by exploring how communities and cultures across time have perceived and entangled rock images with a broad range of material culture, nonhumans, people, emotions, performances, sounds and narratives. Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2023 im Fachbereich Buchwissenschaft, Note: 1,7, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, Veranstaltung: Bibliotheken als Institutionen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Das Volksbüchereiwesen war während der nationalsozialistischen Herrschaft in Deutschland ein bedeutendes Instrument der ideologischen Beeinflussung und Kontrolle der Bevölkerung. Die Bibliotheken wurden einer strengen Überwachung und Lenkung durch die Regierung unterworfen und sollten dazu dienen, das nationalsozialistische Gedankengut zu verbreiten und die Menschen entsprechend zu erziehen. Die Aufarbeitung von Biografien der einzelnen Bibliothekare gestaltet sich dabei als schwierig, da die Vergangenheitsbewältigung der NS-Zeit in Deutschland generell bis in die 80er tabuisiert war, wovon letztlich auch das Bibliothekswesen betroffen war. Mittlerweile gibt es zu diesem Thema umfangreiche Literatur, die sich einer gesamtheitlichen oder speziellen Analyse verschiedener Teilbereiche des Bibliothekswesens zur NS-Zeit angenommen hat. Hinsichtlich der Einordnung des Verhaltens von Volksbibliothekaren gibt es dennoch Lücken in der Forschungsliteratur, bspw. wenn es um die Frage der Diskursqualität innerhalb dieses Berufsstands geht und im Speziellen die der Verbandszeitschrift ¿Die Bücherei¿. Betrachtet man sie als Sprachrohr für Volksbibliothekare, kann untersucht werden, welche Tonalität in der Zeitschrift vorgeherrscht hat und ob sich Beiträge im Sinne des NS-Regimes als angemessen, zurückhaltend oder übertrieben einordnen lassen. Ein wichtiger Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf dem Bildungsanspruch der Volksbibliothekare, welcher als Ergebnis des sogenannten Richtungsstreits entstanden ist. Zudem soll die Sprache in Beiträgen ranghoher Volksbibliothekare analysiert werden, um Einblicke in die diskursive Praxis zu gewinnen. Ein weiterer Fokus der Arbeit liegt auf der Diskursqualität ausgewählter Themenschwerpunkte: Parteibibliotheken, Ausleihsystem, Prachtwerke und die Neuordnung der Ausbildung zum Volksbibliothekar. Die Hausarbeit soll im Großen und Ganzen dazu dienen, anhand der Gestaltung der Verbandszeitschrift ¿Die Bücherei¿ eine Perspektive auf die Diskursqualität im Volksbüchereiwesen zu erhalten.Indem mit Blick auf den Richtungsstreit zum Thema herangeführt werden soll, findet eine Quellenanalyse statt, die das Wirken (ranghoher) Volksbibliothekare in Bezug auf die vorherrschende Diskursqualität darstellen soll. Dabei werden ausgewählte Aufsätze der Zeitschrift der Jahrgänge 1934-1938 betrachtet und die Forschungsliteratur wird unterstützend herangezogen.
