Addressing concepts about documentary heritage in the light of Library and historical concepts and understanding the importance of musical collections as part of social memory, these are some of the themes addressed in the following study. As of the understanding that there is at some point the need to exist the disposal of materials in libraries, this book has as one of its main objectives the verification of stages and criteria concerning the development of collections, especially the disposal, targeting public libraries of Rio Grande do Sul. Through the analysis carried out, it was concluded that there are librarians in most of the public libraries questioned, however there are still few that have a formal document indicating guidelines or procedures that serve as guidance and support for the development of collections, however even so there is the disposal in these institutions. It is believed that as the subject of disposal of materials in libraries is somewhat sensitive and difficult to deal with given the difficulty that professionals have in doing so for numerous reasons, throughout the text it was proposed paths for the development of collections showing that the cycle does not happen randomly, but rather through procedures step by step and that each library must have its own guidelines being necessary the existence of a plan.

This book tries to show, by reviewing the history of Brazilian public libraries, that they could be a totally different institution from the ones we know today. The history of these libraries is full of mistakes created and reinforced by public policies based on common sense and contrary to the information needs of the population. This framework produced a format of Brazilian public libraries which, besides being precarious, develop a standard of common services dissociated from the real information needs of its population, making this institution strange to the Brazilian citizen, especially to the worker. The university library is nothing more than the university itself, where it is known that universities are centres that transmit knowledge through teaching, people and books. Its specific objectives are determined by the university and the general objective is to facilitate the access and the use of the sources of information that represent the basis of teaching and research. The interest in the study was the possibility to discuss the barriers that hinder the development of quality service in a university library and identify the challenges that are posed to the managers of this library. The librarian, the main agent of information, cannot live in the past, he or she needs to be looking ahead, attuned, especially with technological innovations. The university library must be managed according to modern practices, considering the market forces and current economic environment.

It is acknowledged that we live in an information-rich society where the amount of information in the world is presently doubling every three years. Therefore it is necessity of 21st century to include information literacy (IL) in education.The information society calls for all people to become information literate which means that they should not only be able to recognize when information is needed but also be able to identify, locate, evaluate and use effectively information needed for decision making or fulfilling different goals. Information literacy (IL) is increasingly important in the present context of the information explosion and related uncertainties about its authenticity, validity, and reliability.

In the history of library classification Dewey Decimal Classification or DDC holds a special position. Its worldwide popularity as an almost enumerative classification scheme has won thousands of hearts. It has the features of an enumerative scheme tinged with the flavor of a faceted one. Years have passed but its fame has only increased. Starting its journey in 1876 as a 44-page long booklet it only increased in size to reach the last published printed edition i.e. the 23rd edition of DDC in 2011. The web format which is commonly known as WebDewey is equally popular. The present book on DDC is a comprehensive portrayal of the magnum opus of Melvil Dewey. What this classification scheme was in the past, what it is now, and what it is going to be in the near future, has got its eloquent expression in the thirty chapters of the present book. Melvil Dewey¿s short biography has also been incorporated into this book.
