This is a book on nonlinear dynamical systems and their bifurcations under parameter variation. It provides a reader with a solid basis in dynamical systems theory, as well as explicit procedures for application of general mathematical results to particular problems. Special attention is given to efficient numerical implementations of the developed techniques. Several examples from recent research papers are used as illustrations. The book is designed for advanced undergraduate or graduate students in applied mathematics, as well as for Ph.D. students and researchers in physics, biology, engineering, and economics who use dynamical systems as model tools in their studies. A moderate mathematical background is assumed, and, whenever possible, only elementary mathematical tools are used. This new edition preserves the structure of the previous editions, while updating the context to incorporate recent theoretical and software developments and modern techniques for bifurcation analysis. From reviews of earlier editions: "I know of no other book that so clearly explains the basic phenomena of bifurcation theory." - Math Reviews "The book is a fine addition to the dynamical systems literature. It is good to see, in our modern rush to quick publication, that we, as a mathematical community, still have time to bring together, and in such a readable and considered form, the important results on our subject." - Bulletin of the AMS "It is both a toolkit and a primer" - UK Nonlinear News

The introduction of Quantum Theory (QT) provides a unified mathematical framework for Information Retrieval (IR). Compared with the classical IR framework, the quantum-inspired IR framework is based on user-centered modeling methods to model non-classical cognitive phenomena in human relevance judgment in the IR process. With the increase of data and computing resources, neural IR methods have been applied to the text matching and understanding task of IR. Neural networks have a strong learning ability of effective representation and generalization of matching patterns from raw data. This monograph provides a systematic introduction to quantum-inspired neural IR, including quantum-inspired neural language representation, matching and understanding. The cross-field research on QT, neural network and IR is not only helpful to non-classical phenomena modeling in IR but also to break the theoretical bottleneck of neural networks and design more transparent neural IR models. The authors first introduce the language representation method based on QT. Secondly, they introduce the quantum-inspired text matching and decision making model under neural network that shows its theoretical advantages in document ranking, relevance matching, multimodal IR, and can be integrated with neural network to jointly promote the development of IR. Finally, the latest progress of quantum language understanding is introduced and further topics on QT and language modeling provide readers with more materials for thinking.

This book is devoted to the study of the turnpike phenomenon arising in optimal control theory. Special focus is placed on Turnpike results, in sufficient and necessary conditions for the turnpike phenomenon and in its stability under small perturbations of objective functions. The most important feature of this book is that it develops a large, general class of optimal control problems in metric space. Additional value is in the provision of solutions to a number of difficult and interesting problems in optimal control theory in metric spaces. Mathematicians working in optimal control, optimization, and experts in applications of optimal control to economics and engineering, will find this book particularly useful. All main results obtained in the book are new. The monograph contains nine chapters. Chapter 1 is an introduction. Chapter 2 discusses Banach space valued functions, set-valued mappings in infinite dimensional spaces, and related continuous-time dynamical systems. Some convergence results are obtained. In Chapter 3, a discrete-time dynamical system with a Lyapunov function in a metric space induced by a set-valued mapping, is studied. Chapter 4 is devoted to the study of a class of continuous-time dynamical systems, an analog of the class of discrete-time dynamical systems considered in Chapter 3. Chapter 5 develops a turnpike theory for a class of general dynamical systems in a metric space with a Lyapunov function. Chapter 6 contains a study of the turnpike phenomenon for discrete-time nonautonomous problems on subintervals of half-axis in metric spaces, which are not necessarily compact. Chapter 7 contains preliminaries which are needed in order to study turnpike properties of infinite-dimensional optimal control problems. In Chapter 8, sufficient and necessary conditions for the turnpike phenomenon for continuous-time optimal control problems on subintervals of the half-axis in metric spaces, is established. In Chapter 9, the examination continues of the turnpike phenomenon for the continuous-time optimal control problems on subintervals of half-axis in metric spaces discussed in Chapter 8.

This book analyzes the generation of the arrow-categories of a given category, which is a foundational and distinguishable Category Theory phenomena, in analogy to the foundational role of sets in the traditional set-based Mathematics, for defi nition of natural numbers as well. This inductive transformation of a category into the infinite hierarchy of the arrowcategories is extended to the functors and natural transformations. The author considers invariant categorial properties (the symmetries) under such inductive transformations. The book focuses in particular on Global symmetry (invariance of adjunctions) and Internal symmetries between arrows and objects in a category (in analogy to Field Theories like Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity). The second part of the book is dedicated to more advanced applications of Internal symmetry to Computer Science: for Intuitionistic Logic, Untyped Lambda Calculus with Fixpoint Operators, Labeled Transition Systems in Process Algebras and Modal logics as well as Data Integration Theory.

As a society, we¿re in a constant struggle to control uncertainty and predict the unknown. Quite often, we think of scientific fields and theories as being separate from each other. But a more careful investigation can uncover the common thread that ties many of those together. From ChatGPT, to Amazon¿s Alexa, to Apple¿s Siri, data science, and computer science have become part of our lives. In the meantime, the demand for data scientists has grown, as the field has been increasingly called the ¿sexiest profession.¿ This book attempts to specifically cover this gap in literature between data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI). How was uncertainty approached historically, and how has it evolved since? What schools of thought exist in philosophy, mathematics, and engineering, and what role did they play in the development of data science? It uses the history of data science as a stepping stone to explain what the future might hold. Predicting the Unknown provides the framework that will help you understand where AI is headed, and how to best prepare for the world that¿s coming in the next few years, both as a society and within a business. It is not technical and avoids equations or technical explanations, yet is written for the intellectually curious reader, and the technical expert interested in the historical details that can help contextualize how we got here. What Yoüll LearnExplore the bigger picture of data science and see how to best anticipate future changes in that fieldUnderstand machine learning, AI, and data scienceExamine data science and AI through engaging historical and human-centric narratives Who is This Book ForBusiness leaders and technology enthusiasts who are trying to understand how to think about data science and AI

This textbook introduces the language and the techniques of the theory of dynamical systems of finite dimension for an audience of physicists, engineers, and mathematicians at the beginning of graduation. Author addresses geometric, measure, and computational aspects of the theory of dynamical systems. Some freedom is used in the more formal aspects, using only proofs when there is an algorithmic advantage or because a result is simple and powerful. The first part is an introductory course on dynamical systems theory. It can be taught at the master's level during one semester, not requiring specialized mathematical training. In the second part, the author describes some applications of the theory of dynamical systems. Topics often appear in modern dynamical systems and complexity theories, such as singular perturbation theory, delayed equations, cellular automata, fractal sets, maps of the complex plane, and stochastic iterations of function systems are briefly explored for advanced students. The author also explores applications in mechanics, electromagnetism, celestial mechanics, nonlinear control theory, and macroeconomy. A set of problems consolidating the knowledge of the different subjects, including more elaborated exercises, are provided for all chapters.

This highly interdisciplinary book, covering more than six fields, from philosophy and sciences all the way up to the humanities and with contributions from eminent authors, addresses the interplay between content and context, reductionism and holism and their meeting point: the notion of emergence. Much of today's science is reductionist (bottom-up); in other words, behaviour on one level is explained by reducing it to components on a lower level. Chemistry is reduced to atoms, ecosystems are explained in terms of DNA and proteins, etc. This approach fails quickly since we can't cannot extrapolate to the properties of atoms solely from Schrodinger's equation, nor figure out protein folding from an amino acid sequence or obtain the phenotype of an organism from its genotype. An alternative approach to this is holism (top-down). Consider an ecosystem or an organism as a whole: seek patterns on the same scale. Model a galaxy not as 400 billion-point masses (stars) but as an object in its own right with its own properties (spiral, elliptic). Or a hurricane as a structured form of moist air and water vapour. Reductionism is largely about content, whereas holistic models are more attuned to context. Reductionism (content) and holism (context) are not opposing philosophies - in fact, they work best in tandem. Join us on a journey to understand the multifaceted dialectic concerning this duo and how they shape the foundations of sciences and humanities, our thoughts and, the very nature of reality itself.
