'Phenomenal ... Offers us possibilities for rescuing the concept of democracy from its fatal entanglement with racial, heteropatriarchal capitalism'-Angela Y. Davis'Embraces the unruliness of collective struggle, and recognizes freedom not as a destination but practice-an abolitionist, feminist, anticapitalist, antiracist, radically inclusive practice'-Robin D.G. Kelley, author of Freedom Dreams'A compelling and inspiring book that belongs in our movements and our classrooms'-Chandra Talpade Mohanty, author of Feminism Without Borders'An elegantly written masterpiece'-Barbara Ransby, author of Making All Black Lives Matter Become Ungovernable is a provocative new work of political thought setting out to reclaim "freedom", "justice", and "democracy", revolutionary ideas that are all too often warped in the interests of capital and the state. Revealing the mirage of mainstream democratic thought and the false promises of liberal political ideologies, H.L.T. Quan offers an alternative approach: an abolition feminism drawing on a kaleidoscope of refusal praxes, and on a deep engagement with the Black Radical Tradition and queer analytics. With each chapter anchored by episodes from the long history of resistance and rebellions against tyranny, Quan calls for us to take up a feminist ethic of living rooted in the principles of radical inclusion, mutuality and friendship as part of the larger toolkit for confronting fascism, white supremacy, and the neoliberal labor regime.H.L.T. Quan is a political theorist, award-winning filmmaker and Associate Professor of Justice and Social Inquiry in the School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University. Quan is the author of Growth Against Democracy and editor of Cedric J. Robinson.
'A masterful intervention that is particularly pertinent for an age of austerity, pandemic, and rising living costs' Robert Chapman, author of Empire of Normality'A brilliant and much-needed contribution to current debates' Ioana Cerasella Chis, University of Birmingham'A comprehensive analysis which also intelligently looks at how disability can fit into the modern world' Joshua Hepple, activist, writer and disability equality trainerThe rise of the extreme right globally, the crisis of capitalism and the withdrawal of all but the most punitive arms of the state are having a disastrous impact on disabled people's lives. Bob Williams-Findlay offers an account of the transformative potential of disability praxis and how it relates to disabled politics and activism. He addresses different sites of struggle, showing how disabled people have advanced radical theory into the implementation of policies.Examining the growth of the global Disabled People's Movement during the 1960s, Williams-Findlay shows how a new social discourse emerged that shifted the focus away from seeing disability as restrictions on an individual's body, towards understanding the impact of restrictions created by capitalist relations. He shines light on the contested definitions of disability, asking us to reconsider how different socio-political contexts produce varied understandings of social oppression and how we can play a role in transforming definitions and societies.Bob Williams-Findlay is the founder of Birmingham Disability Rights Group and the former Chair of the national organisation BCODP. He has written in various publications on the topic of disability politics.

This book explores the extent to which the COVID-19 pandemic is poised to be a permanent fixture in the modern world which in contemporary times will be thought of in terms of before and after the pandemic. It looks at how the pandemic has brought to the fore the question of the appropriate ethics, politics, and spirituality and highlights the present condition of humanity and the need to rethink alternative planetary futures. It argues that the pandemic has existential and epistemic implications for human life on planet Earth, and a post-COVID-19 future requires a fundamental transformation of the present economic, political, and social conditions.Drawing on empirical case studies on the COVID-19 pandemic from Africa and beyond, contributions in this book challenge the reader to rethink alternative planetary futures. It will be a useful resource for students, scholars, and researchers of African studies, citizenship studies, global development, global politics, human geography, migration studies, development studies, international studies, international relations, and political science.

"In her newest book, How to End Injustice Everywhere, psychologist Melanie Joy reveals the common denominator driving all forms of injustice, from sexism to speciesism to abusive interpersonal relationships and group dynamics. Joy explains that all injustices-such as racism, patriarchy, animal exploitation, environmental degradation, and domestic abuse-share a common denominator, which is relational dysfunction, or dysfunctional ways of relating: to other individuals, between social groups, and to nonhuman animals and the environment. Relational dysfunction stems from a particular psychology, a "nonrelational mentality." This mentality causes us to think, feel, and act in ways that violate integrity, harm dignity and lead to unjust power imbalances. Joy sheds light on the nonrelational mentality and explains how it shapes and is shaped by the various oppressive, or "nonrelational" systems in our world that cause widespread injustice. Until those of us who are helping to bring about justice understand relational dysfunction and know how to change it, we risk recreating injustice even as we work to end it, and our movements are at risk of cannibalizing themselves. How to End Injustice Everywhere is a call for anyone working toward justice for humans, animals, or the environment to unify behind a shared "metamission" of creating a more relational world. The book provides an empowering and unique approach to ending injustice, and it offers not only an examination of nonrelational systems and behaviors, but also practical tools to help raise awareness, reduce infighting, and build more resilient and impactful justice movements"--
Empowered by Slavery examines how the institution of slavery was an integral part of early America's culture and civilization. It describes the power dynamics within antebellum America that permitted the use of African American slave labor to be ruthlessly exploited by America's political, military, and industrial leaders prior to the Civil War. Seven specific slave plantations are examined in this book, along with the plantation owners, as examples of the exploitative system that made a small number of white men extraordinarily wealthy.
This book brings together reflections, knowledge and learning about the experiences of religious minorities.
Available open access digitally under CC-BY-NC-ND license. This book offers a theory of trafficking and modern slavery with implications for policy. Despite economic development, modern slavery persists all around the world. The issue is not only one of crime but the regulation of the economy, better welfare, and social protections. Going beyond polarized debates on the sex trade, an original empirical analysis shows the importance of profit-taking. Although individual experience matters, the root causes lie in intersecting regimes of inequality of gender regimes, capitalism, and the legacies of colonialism. This book shows the importance of coercion and the societal complexities that perpetuate modern slavery.

Freedom of religion and belief is crucial to any sustainable development process, yet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) pay little attention to religious inequalities. This book offers a comprehensive overview of how efforts to achieve SDGs can be enhanced by paying greater attention to freedom of religion and belief. In particular, it illustrates how poverty is often a direct result of religious prejudice and how religious identity can shape a person's job prospects, their children's education and the quality of public services they receive. Drawing on evidence from Asia, the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa, the book foregrounds the lived experiences of marginalized communities as well as researchers and non-state actors.
