"Start building bridges instead of barriers! This essential guide offers a simple 4-part framework that will help you have honest and enlightening conversations despite deep and fundamental disagreements. Divisions are on the rise around the world, and 2024 may well be a peak year. We're losing the ability to disagree without demonizing. There is a deep need for this practical and accessible guide to having challenging conversations in any situation, from the workplace to the classroom to the dinner table. It's not about saying the right words at the right time but something vastly deeper. In this book, you'll discover the 4 pillars of respectfully disagreeing: Focus on learning not lecturing; Fill in the gaps with curiosity not conclusions; Find the grey, not the black and white; Formulate your plan to humanize and not harm. But this is not a weighty tome. Each chapter features a cartoon, and Justin Jones-Fosu tackles this serious subject with a playful and compassionate tone. For example, he writes "I have become more and more intentional in my desire to respectfully disagree with others (except those who think putting ketchup on eggs is wrong...there is no hope for respect there)." With a wide range of examples and exercises throughout, this is a timely and reader-friendly handbook to disagreeing with someone's ideology while passionately pursuing their humanity"--

Heal Your Sh!t Find Your Happy is a call to action for women who manage anxiety, who gracefully (or not) handle the overwhelm and stress of life, maybe depression, who have felt like they were spinning out of control, who've ever been called "too much," or who've often thought, "what is wrong with me?" It's for adult survivors of childhood sexual assault and the people who love them. Author Christine Varnavas educates the reader on how stress and trauma work and how it affects us and those around us if not released; she also shares parts of her story, some not so fun things, and the amazing somatic (body-based) tools that showed up in her life to help her feel and heal just when she needed them. The invitation is to do the work in your body, in this lifetime, on this planet, right now, to heal and break the chain of generational trauma, using the wicked wisdom of our bodies and maybe have some fun doing it!READER REVIEWS"Christy shares a memoir of her journey to MOVE through the fragmenting thoughts and emotions of FEAR, following a childhood trauma, to remember her wholeness. She relates her experiences with courage and compassion for herself and all the travelers on this road." ~ Carleen Sterner, Ayurvedic Health Practitioner"As someone who had a front-row seat to much of Christine's story, I found myself transfixed to the pages. Christine's story is one that not only informs the mind but also the heart. It is an amazing book to keep close to you, to return to repeatedly, whether you are healing or, like I am, in the profession of helping others to heal, this book is for you."~ Dr. Amy Schlieve, Schlieve Consulting

Analyzing sex-offense laws and false claims, this book shows that laws based on vengeance rather than justice or evidence create new forms of harm while failing to address the real and pervasive problem of sexual violence. In this timely and extensively researched book, sociologist Emily Horowitz shows how current sex-offense policies in the United States create new forms of harm and prevent those who have caused harm from the process of constructive repentance or contributing to society after punishment. Horowitz also illustrates the failure of criminal justice responses to social problems. Sharing detailed narratives from the experiences of those on registries and their loved ones, Horowitz reveals the social impact and cycle of violence that results from dehumanizing and banishing those who have already been held accountable. From Rage to Reason offers a new perspective on how and why false claims about sex offenses became so pervasive and how these myths fostered ineffective policies that have little to do with the reality of most sexual abuse. It argues that to truly prevent sexual abuse, we must unearth the sources of these misunderstandings, debunk these claims in a systematic way, and have frank and genuine discussions about the limits of legal responses to complex social problems.

My name is Laura, I am 19 years old. I'm a student and I prostitute myself to pay for my studies. I'm not alone in this. It seems that many other students are doing the same thing. It all followed a strange logic, without me really realizing that I was falling. I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth. I've never known luxury or ease, but until this year, I've never lacked for anything. My thirst for learning and my convictions always made me think that my student years would be the most beautiful, the most carefree. I never thought that my first year at university would turn into a real nightmare. An unprecedented account of a contemporary phenomenon that has only become more pronounced with the prevalence of the Internet and cell phones. The Afterword includes a sociological perspective by Eva Clouet, author of the first survey on student prostitution in the age of new communication technologies, published at the same time by Max Milo.

Henry Louis Wallace terrorized Charlotte, North Carolina, from May 1992 to March 1994. Wallace preyed on lower economic class Black women between 17 and 35 years old. He knew most of his victims, some through his job at Taco Bell, and gained their trust with his friendly demeanor and gentle nature-concealing a monster fueled by drug abuse and rage against women. A rarity in that he was an African American serial killer, his murderous rampage spurred controversy throughout the city. Community members accused local police of ignoring the murders because of the victims' race. Wallace attended the funerals of many of his victims and offered condolences to families. The ensuing investigation became the largest in North Carolina's history. Wallace was eventually found guilty and convicted of nine counts of murder, but he admitted to more killings while incarcerated; he is potentially responsible for anywhere from 20 to 90 deaths of Black women. Wallace continues to appeal and awaits his execution at Central Prison in Raleigh. BAD HENRY: The Murderous Rampage of 'The Taco Bell Strangler' by Ron Chepesiuk offers valuable insight into the psychology of serial killers and sheds light on issues surrounding race and policing.

Trajectories of Governance studies the complex dynamics of order-making, violence and governance in peripheral cities in Latin America from a comparative, historical and multi-scalar approach. It aims to discover more about the drivers, contexts and uneven levels of violence through the case studies of Chalatenango and Sonsonate in El Salvador and Pereira and Tunja in Colombia. Based on a multidisciplinary analytical framework, it explains why and how some peripheral cities have become the locus of violent orders, whereas others have managed to control violence, and to examine the role of violence in the workings of local governance.

Matthew 18 is a heartfelt conversation between Bishop Bill Muhm and Carrie Bucalo, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. Their mutual concern for the health and well-being of the Church led to an honest dialogue about the deep wounds victims experience, emerging in a fresh, relevant, and hopeful commentary. Each chapter begins with a selected text from Matthew 18. Bishop Muhm offers theological insights, and Carrie responds with her experiences as a survivor. Together, they reveal that Jesus' words in Matthew 18 are a direct source of healing and guidance for the whole Church during this time of scandal. Enhanced with Carrie's emotive artwork, this little book shows that the present time of crisis and sadness is also a time of extraordinary grace. "Where sin abounds, grace abounds all the more" (Romans 5:20).

"The incredible story of MOVE, the revolutionary Black civil liberties group that Philadelphia police bombed in 1985, killing 11 civilians-by one of the few people born into the organization, raised during the bombing's tumultuous aftermath, and entrusted with repairing what was left of his family. Before police dropped a bomb on a residential neighborhood on May 13, 1985, few people outside Philadelphia were aware that a Black-led civil liberties organization had taken root there. Founded in 1972 by a charismatic ideologue called John Africa, MOVE's mission was to protect all forms of life from systemic oppression, drawing ideology from the Black Panther Party, PETA, and Earth First. The organization emerged in an era when Black Philadelphians suffered under devastating policies brought by President Ronald Reagan's War on Drugs and Mayor Frank Rizzo's overtly racist police surveillance. MOVE members lived together in a commune of West Philadelphia row houses and took the surname Africa out of admiration for the group's founder. But in MOVE's lifestyle, city officials saw threats to their status quo. Their bombing of the MOVE commune shocked the nation and made international news. Eleven people were killed, including five children. And the City of Brotherly Love became known as the City That Bombed Itself. Among the children most affected by the bombing was Mike Africa Jr. Born in jail following a police attack on MOVE that led to his parents' decades-long incarcerations, Mike was six years old and living with his grandmother when the commune was bombed. In the ensuing years, Mike sought purpose in the ashes left behind. He began learning about the law as a teenager and became adept at speaking and inspiring public support with the help of other MOVE members. In 2018, at age 40, he finally succeeded in getting his parents released from prison. ON A MOVE is one of the most unimaginable stories of injustice and resilience in recent American history. But it is not only one of tragedy. It is about coming-of-age for a young activist, the strong ties of family, and, against all odds, learning how to take indignities on the chin and to work within the very system that created them. At once a harrowing personal account and an impassioned examination of racism and police violence, On a Move testifies to the power of love and hope, in the face of astonishing wrongdoing"--
