The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license. This volume presents a range of research approaches to the exploration of ageing during a pandemic situation. One of the first collections of its kind, it offers an array of studies employing research methodologies that lend themselves to replication in similar contexts by those seeking to understand the effects of epidemics on older people. Thematically organised, it shows how to reconcile qualitative and quantitative approaches, thus rendering them complementary, bringing together studies from around the world to offer an international perspective on ageing as it relates to an unprecedented epidemiological phenomenon. As such, it will appeal to researchers in the field of gerontology, as well as sociologists of medicine and clinicians seeking to understand the disruptive effects of the recent coronavirus outbreak on later life.
'A groundbreaking debut from an extraordinary writer ... a testament to where a woman can go after rock-bottom'PIPER KERMAN, New York Times bestselling author of ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACKKeri Blakinger's brave, brutal memoir, Corrections in Ink, is a riveting story about suffering, recovery and redemption' DAVID SHEFF, NEW YORK TIMESKeri Blakinger had always lived at full throttle. Whether flying through the air, chasing Olympic dreams on the ice rink; surviving on as few calories as she could; or balancing a heroin addiction with pursuing a degree at an Ivy League university. But on a cold December day, Keri is arrested with a Tupperware container full of heroin. Shortly afterwards, she is convicted and sent to prison.Forced to confront her addiction, Keri finally manages to break free of it, and finds herself in a place unlike anything she has experienced before: a world built on senseless brutality, but whose inhabitants, her fellow inmates, will change her life forever.Written in luminous prose, with searing honesty and flashes of dark humour, Corrections in Ink shines a light on a broken prison system, and the cruelty and kindness Blakinger experienced there. It is a radical call for justice, and a testament to the power of finding one's voice.
The summer of 2021 saw a massive rise in the number of infections and deaths fromCovid-19 in India. Even by conservative estimates, at least 1.5 million people hadlost their lives by June; several times the official figure. As in the first wave of thepandemic, this time, too, the chaos and suffering was in large measure, as HarshMander shows, due to mismanagement by an uncaring and cynical state. The first part of the book, 'Locking Down the Poor', describes the grave humanitariancrisis of 2020, which pushed the urban poor to the brink of starvation. It shows howthis was a direct consequence of public policy choices that the central governmentmade, particularly of imposing the world's longest and most stringent lockdown, with the smallest relief package. Mander brings us voices of out-of-work daily-wageand informal workers, the homeless and the destitute, all overwhelmed by hunger, humiliation and dread. From the highways and overcrowded quarantine centres, hebrings us stories of the estimated 3 crore migrant workers whose livelihoods weredestroyed, forcing them to walk hundreds of kilometres to their villages. The second part of the book, 'Burning Pyres, Mass Graves', records the horrorsof the following year, when everything from hospital beds to oxygen and essentialmedicines fell disastrously short. Mander traces the causes for these shortages to thecriminal neglect of public health in India, a situation made worse under the NarendraModi government, leading to the extortion of a beleaguered population by everyonefrom suppliers of oxygen cylinders to pharma billionaires. He holds the state culpablefor indulging in pageantry-with the PM advertising himself as a messiah-when thecountry needed to brace for the impact of the second wave.Combining ground reports with hard data and first-hand knowledge, Mander chroniclesthe greatest humanitarian catastrophe India has faced in a century, the effects of whichwill be felt for decades. This powerful, even shattering, book is a necessary record ofa national tragedy that too many of us want to forget, when remembering is our onlydefence against a similar disaster in the future.
Caribbean countries have had to navigate multiple crises, which have tested their collective resolve through time. In this regard, the region¿s landscape has been shaped by an interplay of vulnerability and resilience which has brought to the fore possibilities and contradictions. It is within this context that the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic must be considered. Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Covid-19 and the Caribbean, Volume 1: The State, Economy and Health provides a comprehensive, multi- and interdisciplinary assessment of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, using the Caribbean as the site of enquiry. The edited collection mobilises critical perspectives brought to bear on research produced within and beyond the boundaries and boundedness of conventional academic disciplinary divides, in response to the multi-dimensional crises of our time. The culmination of this collection offers a reimagining of our Caribbean contemporary futures in the hope of finding home-grown solutions, avenues and possibilities. This volume is divided into five (5) parts consisting of twenty-four (24) chapters and weave together thematic strands that focus on governance, the macro and micro aspects of the economy, tourism and hospitality, business management and public health policy. Together, the chapters in this volume tell the story of the extent and effects of Caribbean governments¿ response to the pandemic and the ways in which industries and organisations have had to pivot to survive and transform their management and operational practices.
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the global world but impacted women with children and careers disproportionately. The social, familial, and professional strains of this crisis birthed with it the opportunity to reflect on the values, expectations, lifestyle, and priorities that have defined motherhood. This book uplifts the shared consciousness of motherhood; the common veil that transcends time, region, and boundary. Part contemporary anthology, part historical narrative, and fully nestled in the tenets of psychological science, this book spotlights the awakenings of 33 mothers of varied ages, ethnicities, family compositions, and professional backgrounds in the United States as they renegotiated motherhood and career. Each reflection offers a window into the heart of a career mother, capturing the kaleidoscope of her struggles, vulnerabilities, and hopes, while empowering her insights. The reflections are bound together by themes that cut across lived maternal experiences, bringing to light a powerful creed for a life re-imagined- one that propels mothers forward in all of their roles.
The anthology presents the social consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in the field of work and gainful employment from a multidisciplinary perspective of social and economic sciences. Specifically, it deals with the analysis of changes in work processes and relations in the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. Different facets of the discussion are taken up, and the topic of "work, precarity and COVID-19" is discussed along a wide range of diversity categories (age, gender, disability, social origin, ethnicity, religion, etc.) and their intersections (intersectionality). At the same time, the focus is on discussing alternative models and ways of dealing with the current crisis that (re)establish social justice and inclusion through work.
"In 2022, Los Angeles became the US city with the largest population of unhoused people, a stark contrast with the city's luxurious hillside mansions. This book from sociologist Neil Gong traces the divide between the haves and have nots by looking to mental health treatment, a key factor in what kind of life a person can live. As Gong shows, the mental health options available to the wealthy versus the poor affects not only the resources they can access, but their very personhood. The Downtown Skid Row area is infamous as "America's homeless capital"-a dumping ground for people with mental illness, ex-prisoners, and addicts. For people diagnosed with mental illness who get caught in the social safety net, often through arrests, the state will largely offer a slate of outpatient tactics. Caseworkers visit individuals regularly to help them with the necessities of functioning independently, such as obtaining identification and shopping for groceries. These services often keep mentally ill people housed, fed, and hopefully out of prison, but they rarely offer treatment for people in psychological distress. They are free but not treated. Across town in West LA or the beach cities, wealthy people diagnosed with serious mental illness attend luxurious treatment centers, from outpatient day clinics to residential programs by the ocean. Programs may offer yoga, holistic care, and farm-to-table organic meals alongside therapeutic treatments and university-affiliated psychiatrists. These treatments aim for psychological wellness, of course, but they also aim to stabilize people's lives, often through programs that greatly limit choice and mobility-families of the wealthy mentally ill expect that their loved ones will be contained. They are treated but not free. Throughout, Gong shows us starkly different ways of understanding people in psychic distress, and divergent ideas and pathways of recovery that may make them into separate kinds of people. At its core, this book project is about the way social context shapes problems and attempts to solve them. The book moves beyond psychiatric care to address issues of urban policy, family dynamics, and, ultimately, the meaning of freedom and personhood in contemporary America"--
This volume provides a close look at the ways in which LGBTQ2 people form familial bonds. It brings together stories from non-binary families across continents and cultures and recenters care as a foundational value for creating familial ties. This volume therefore addresses a gap in the literature concerning non-binary family configurations by going beyond the legal battle for non-binary partnership rights. In recent discussions on marriage equality, the notion of familial bonds, which was important in early discussions on non-binary family research, has been decentered in favor of legal and homonormative understandings of individual rights. This volume centers familial bonds as the first step toward reimagining how to do research on the family and adds to research on family studies as well as gender studies.Students and researchers of sociology, anthropology, social work, gender studies, family research, well-being research, and anyone else working on or with non-binary families will find this book highly topical and interesting.
Drawing from an activist research project spanning Loja, Santo Domingo, New York, New Jersey, and Barcelona, this book offers a feminist intersectional analysis of the impact of migration on health and well-being. It assesses how social inequalities and migration and health policies, in Ecuador and destination countries, shape the experiences of migrants. The author also explores how individual and collective action challenges health, geopolitical, gender, sexual, ethnoracial, and economic disparities, and empowers communities. This is a thorough analysis of interpersonal, institutional, and structural mechanisms of marginalization and resistance. It will inform policy and research for better responses to migration's negative effects on health, and progress towards greater equality and social justice.

How to take a political beating and surviveIn the struggle for a better world, setbacks are inevitable. Defeat can feel overwhelming at times, but it has to be endured. How then do the people on the front line keep going? To answer that question and to help readers roll with the punches, Hannah Proctor draws on historical resources to find out how revolutionaries and activists of the past kept a grip on hope.Burnout considers former Communards exiled to a penal colony in the South Pacific; a young Bolshevik fleeing the city in despair; an ex-militant on the analyst’s couch relating dreams of ruined landscapes; a trade union organizer seeking advice from a spiritual healer; and a group of feminists padding a room with mattresses to scream about the patriarchy. Jettisoning therapy talk and its stranglehold on our language, Proctor offers a different way forward—neither denial nor despair. Her cogent exploration of the ways militants make sense of their own burnout demonstrates that it is possible to mourn and organize at once, and to do both without compromise.[ENDORSEMENTS TK][logo]SUBJECT LINE [INITIAL CAP ONLY]: PoliticsRETAIL PRICES [DOMESTIC MARKET FIRST]: £14.99 / $24.95 / $33.95CANversobooks.comISBN-13: 9781839766053
