Comprehensive overview of key theoretical approaches and issues in the field.
Rachel Carson warned us about poisoning the environment; Jane Jacobs fought for livable cities and strong communities; Jane Goodall demonstrated the indelible kinship between humans and animals; and Alice Waters urged us to reconsider what and how we eat. This is the story of four visionaries who profoundly shaped the world we live in today: their efforts ignited a transformative progressive movement and formed the bedrock of 1960s counterculture. Together, these women?linked not by friendship or field, but by their choice to break with convention?showed what one person speaking truth to power can do.
"...it is ourselves, our own vital instincts, that we wrong, when we trample on the rights of the fellow-beings, human or animal, over whom we chance to hold jurisdiction."Henry Stephens Salt was a noted ethical vegetarian, socialist, humanitarian and pacifist. It was Salt who influenced Gandhi's study of vegetarianism and non-violent protest. He is credited with being the first writer to argue explicitly in favor of animal rights. He was way ahead of his time in his approach to animal welfare. Henry Salt is indeed an interesting turn-of-the-century writer whose ideas have been greatly influential and whose books are still worth reading.Salt believed animals should be free to live their own lives and that humanity has a responsibility to treat them compassionately and justly.CONTENTS :Prefatory NoteChapter I - The Principle of Animals' RightsChapter II - The Case of Domestic AnimalsChapter III - The Case of Wild AnimalsChapter IV - The Slaughter of Animals for FoodChapter V - Sport, or Amateur ButcheryChapter VI - Murderous MillineryChapter VII - Experimental TortureChapter VIII - Lines of ReformAppendix- Bibliography of the Rights of AnimalsThe object of the following essay is to set the principle of animals' rights on a consistent and intelligible footing, to show that this principle underlies the various efforts of humanitarian reformers, and to make a clearance of the comfortable fallacies which the apologists of the present system have industriously accumulated. While not hesitating to speak strongly when occasion demanded, I have tried to avoid the tone of irrelevant recrimination so common in these controversies, and thus to give more unmistakable emphasis to the vital points at issue. We have to decide, not whether the practice of fox-hunting, for example, is more, or less, cruel than vivisection, but whether all practices which inflict unnecessary pain on sentient beings are not incompatible with the higher instincts of humanity. I am aware that many of my contentions will appear very ridiculous to those who view the subject from a contrary standpoint, and regard the lower animals as created solely for the pleasure and advantage of man; on the other hand, I have myself derived an unfailing fund of amusement from a rather extensive study of our adversaries' reasoning. It is a conflict of opinion, wherein in time alone can adjudicate: but already there are not a few signs that the laugh will rest ultimately with the humanitarians. My thanks are due to several friends who have helped me in the preparation of this book; I may mention Mr. Ernest Bell, Mr. Kenneth Romanes, and Mr. W. E. A. Axon. My many obligations to previous writers are acknowledged in the foot-notes and appendices.

Red Panda: Biology and Conservation of the First Panda, Second Edition, provides the most up-to-date research, data, and conservation solutions for the red pandas, Ailurus species. Since the publication of the previous edition in 2010, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) updated the threat level of red pandas, and they are now considered to be endangered. This latest edition is updated to provide an in-depth look at the scientific and conservation-based issues urgently facing the red panda today. Led by one of the world's leading authorities and advocates for red panda conservation, this new edition includes data from the Population and Habitat Viability (PHVA) workshops conducted in three of the species' range states, Nepal, China, and India; these workshops utilized firsthand information on the decrease of red panda populations due to factors including deforestation, illegal pet trade, human population growth, and climate change. This book also includes updated information from the first edition on reproduction, anatomy, veterinary care, zoo management, and fossil history.
Over the past thirty years, as Wesley J. Smith details in his latest book, the concept of animal rights has been seeping into the very bone marrow of Western culture. One reason for this development is that the term "animal rights? is so often used very loosely, to mean simply being nicer to animals. But although animal rights groups do sometimes focus their activism on promoting animal welfare, the larger movement they represent is actually advancing a radical belief system. For some activists, the animal rights ideology amounts to a quasi religion, one whose central doctrine declares a moral equivalency between the value of animal lives and the value of human lives. Animal rights ideologues embrace their beliefs with a fervor that is remarkably intense and sustained, to the point that many dedicate their entire lives to "speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves.? Some believe their cause to be so righteous that it entitles them to cross the line from legitimate advocacy to vandalism and harassment, or even terrorism against medical researchers, the fur and food industries, and others they accuse of abusing animals. All people who love animals and recognize their intrinsic worth can agree with Wesley J. Smith that human beings owe animals respect, kindness, and humane care. But Smith argues eloquently that our obligation to humanity matters more, and that granting "rights? to animals would inevitably diminish human dignity. In making this case with reason and passion, A Rat Is a Pig Is a Dog Is a Boy strikes a major blow against a radically antihuman dogma.
With more than two million members and supporters, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is the world's largest animal-rights organization, and its founder and president, Ingrid Newkirk, is one of the most well-known and most effective activists in America. She has spearheaded worldwide efforts to improve the treatment of animals in manufacturing, entertainment, and elsewhere. Every day, in laboratories, food factories, and other industries, animals by the millions are subjected to inhumane cruelty. In this accessible guide, Newkirk teaches readers hundreds of simple ways to stop thoughtless animal cruelty and make positive choices. For each topic, Newkirk provides hard facts, personal insight, inspiration, ideas, and resources, including: . How to eat healthfully and compassionately . How to adopt animals rather than support puppy mills . How to make their vote count and change public opinion . How to switch to cruelty-free cosmetics and clothing . How to choose amusements that protect rather than exploit animals. With public concern for the well-being of animals greater than ever-particularly among young people-this timely, practical book offers exciting and easy ways to make a difference.
"A most important book that will change the way many of us look at animals--and, ultimately, at ourselves." -- Chicago TribuneSince its original publication in 1975, this groundbreaking work has awakened millions of people to the existence of "speciesism"--our systematic disregard of nonhuman animals--inspiring a worldwide movement to transform our attitudes to animals and eliminate the cruelty we inflict on them.In Animal Liberation, author Peter Singer exposes the chilling realities of today's "factory farms" and product-testing procedures--destroying the spurious justifications behind them, and offering alternatives to what has become a profound environmental and social as well as moral issue. An important and persuasive appeal to conscience, fairness, decency, and justice, it is essential reading for the supporter and the skeptic alike.
As a child brought up among animals, Lynne Sharpe never doubted they were essentially 'creatures like us'. It came a shock to learn that others did not agree. Here she exposes the bizarre way in which many philosophers - including even some great and humane ones -- have repeatedly talked and written about animals. They have discussed the topic in terms of non-existent abstract 'animals', conceived as defective humans, entirely neglecting the experience of people who have wide practical knowledge of companion animals through working with them. She testifies to the interesting nature of these creatures' lives, noting that the usual narrow approach to animals carries with it also a distorted notion of human life as essentially cerebral and language-centred.
Choosing a compassionate lifestyle that makes you feel good and positively impacts on the environment and on animals has never been easier. In this practical and accessible handbook, loaded with resources for all products that are mentioned, Ingrid Newkirk presents fabulous options that will not only enhance your life, but those of your neighbors, your community, animals, and the earth itself. From comfortable home furnishings, to delicious foods, to fashionable clothing there are a myriad of choices to be made that can have a lasting positive effect on the well-being of animals and the environment, including:- recognizing hidden animal ingredients in cosmetics and household products- raising ecologically aware and animal-friendly kids- creating healthy, environmentally-friendly meals for everyday and special occasions- dressing with style without using leather or other animal products- dealing kindly with mice, insects, and other 'pests' in home or garden- adopting the right animal companion for you- volunteering and investing in eco- and animal-friendly companies- traveling with Eco-consciousness
For anyone who has ever wondered about the ethics of killing animals for food, this is the definitive collection of essays on the ethical debate. Written by internationally recognized scholars on both sides of the debate, the provocative articles here compiled will give vegetarians and meat-eaters a thorough grounding in all aspects of this controversial issue. After an introduction to the nature of the debate by editor Steve F. Sapontzis, Daniel Dombrowski reviews the history of vegetarianism. There follows a discussion of health issues and what anthropology has to tell us about human diet. Also included are the classic cases for vegetarianism from philosophers Peter Singer and Tom Regan, and new essays rebutting those classic positions from humanists Roger Scruton and Carl Cohen, among others. Various scholars then examine religious teachings about eating animals, which are drawn from Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, as well as Native American and Eastern traditions. Finally, Carol J. Adams, Deanne Curtin, and Val Plumwood, among other outstanding advocates, debate the ethics of eating meat in connection with feminism, environmentalism, and multiculturalism.Containing virtually a "Who's Who" of philosophers, social critics, environmentalists, feminists, and religious scholars who have participated in the vegetarianism debate over the past quarter century, this outstanding anthology of expert articles, most of them new, provides the latest thinking on a subject of increasing public interest.
"Exciting. . . part adventure story, part wildlife tale"-The Boston Globe Intelligent, majestic, and loyal, with lifespans matching our own, elephants are among the greatest of the wonders gracing the African wilds. Yet, in the 1970s and 1980s, about a thousand of these captivating creatures were slaughtered in Zambia each year, killed for their valuable ivory tusks. When biologists Mark and Delia Owens, residing in Africa to study lions, found themselves in the middle of a poaching fray, they took the only side they morally could: that of the elephants. The Eye of the Elephant recounts the Owens' struggle to save these innocent animals from decimation, a journey not only to supply the natives with ways of supporting their villages, but also to cultivate support around the globe for the protection of elephants. Filled with daring exploits among disgruntled hunters, arduous labor on the African plains, and vivid depictions of various wildlife, this remarkable tale is at once an adventure story, a travelogue, a preservationist call to action, and a fascinating examination of both human and animal nature.
New York Times bestselling author Douglas Adams and zoologist Mark Carwardine take off around the world in search of exotic, endangered creatures.Join them as they encounter the animal kingdom in its stunning beauty, astonishing variety, and imminent peril: the giant Komodo dragon of Indonesia, the helpless but loveable Kakapo of New Zealand, the blind river dolphins of China, the white rhinos of Zaire, the rare birds of Mauritius island in the Indian Ocean. Hilarious and poignant-as only Douglas Adams can be-Last Chance to See is an entertaining and arresting odyssey through the Earth's magnificent wildlife galaxy. Praise for Last Chance to See "Lively, sharply satirical, brilliantly written . . . shows how human care can undo what human carelessness has wrought."-The Atlantic"These authors don't hesitate to present the alarming facts: More than 1,000 species of animals (and plants) become extinct every year. . . . Perhaps Adams and Carwardine, with their witty science, will help prevent such misadventures in the future."-Boston Sunday Herald "Very funny and moving . . . The glimpses of rare fauna seem to have enlarged [Adams's] thinking, enlivened his world; and so might the animals do for us all, if we were to help them live."-The Washington Post Book World "[Adams] invites us to enter into a conspiracy of laughter and caring."-Los Angeles Times "Amusing . . . thought-provoking . . . Its details on the heroic efforts being made to save these animals are inspirational."-The New York Times Book Review

Many creatures are mystical. Althrough human beings know much biological information including the DNA, they cannot find the solution to all codes of nature. So we often imagine what a wondrous sight it would be if the dinosaur, the saber toothed tiger and the mammoth were still alive!Fortunately, we still have the giant panda. The giant panda has been around for 8 million years. It witnessed the evolution of the late Miocene and the test of the Quaternary glaciers. It was the flagship of the "giant panda-stegodon" animal group. The giant panda, has witnessed all the bygone secrets to which human beings want to have a clue. The harmonious and primeval beauty can be best reflected in the peacefully co-existing colors of black an white in the panda.Among hundreds of millions of people who love and care for the giant panda, Zhou Mengqi, photographer of this picture album, is a native of Chengdu, Sichuan Province, which is the habitat of the giant panda. With deep love for his home city and nature. Zhou has spent more than 20 years taking many rare pictures of the giant panda. Through his lens, readers see the perfect co-existence of black and white, fine movements of the giant panda and its emotional exchanges with human beings. In his pictures, the giant panda is not only a "living fossil" in biological sense but also a noble being in nature, whose mingling with nature and human being is best highlighted thanks to the photographer's unique vision and tender feeling.Zhou has experienced much hardship in taking thousands of photos of the giant panda. Many of the wonderful photos are included in this album. Reading the photos, one will understand the history, habits, breeding and protection of the giant panda. The photos will bring readers to the true world of the giant panda.
