This is the book I wanted and needed when I started teaching. This book has been written with teachers in mind. This book will change how you see Shakespeare. Lets make Shakespeare exciting and fun. Let's shake up Shakespeare.
This book focuses on elementary and middle school children¿s understanding of mathematics as well as the cognitive aspects involved in the development of mathematical knowledge, skills, and understanding. Children¿s success in and understanding of mathematics stem from factors beyond the mathematics curriculum. Researchers are increasingly becoming aware of the necessity to consider a complex set of variables when accounting for large individual differences in mathematics achievement. These chapters contribute to how both researchers and educators can consider the multidimensionality of skills involved in developing mathematical knowledge in the middle school years as well as to how this knowledge can be used to enhance practices in the mathematics classroom. Topics include the cognitive and spatial skills involved in mathematics knowledge, the role of motivation in mathematics learning, the neurological processes and development of children¿s mathematics skills, the development ofunderstanding of arithmetic and fraction concepts, the factors relating to children¿s word problem success, and techniques to promote mathematics understanding. This book and its companion, Mathematical Teaching and Learning, take an interdisciplinary perspective to mathematical learning and development in the elementary and middle school years. The authors and perspectives in this book draw from education, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and cognitive psychology. The book will be relevant to scholars/educators in the field of mathematics education and also those in childhood development and cognition. Each chapter also includes practical tips and implications for parents as well as for educators and researchers.
This book investigates how we are involved in politically informed structures and how they appear to us. Following different approaches in contemporary aesthetics and cultural philosophy, such as everyday aesthetics, atmosphere and aestheticization, the contributions explore how embedded powers in politics, education, democracy, and landscape are analyzed through aesthetics.
The relationship between human beings and the ecological environment poses a significant global challenge for the present and the future. As human-environment interactions become more complex, it is essential to measure and understand the spatiotemporal dynamics of coupled human-environment systems and how they are influenced by social and ecological factors. This book offers twenty original research articles that explore the latest developments in monitoring and projecting the spatiotemporal changes of the coupled system, examining the responses of the coupled system to socio-ecological drivers and processes, and discussing the implications for the sustainable management of the coupled system.
This book synthesizes a wealth of international research on the critical topic of 'fostering understanding of complex systems in biology education'. Complex systems are prevalent in many scientific fields, and at all scales, from the micro scale of a single cell or molecule to complex systems at the macro scale such as ecosystems. Understanding the complexity of natural systems can be extremely challenging, though crucial for an adequate understanding of what they are and how they work. The term "e;systems thinking"e; has become synonymous with developing a coherent understanding of complex biological processes and phenomena. For researchers and educators alike, understanding how students' systems thinking develops is an essential prerequisite to develop and maintain pedagogical scaffolding that facilitates students' ability to fully understand the system's complexity. To that end, this book provides researchers and teachers with key insights from the current research community on how to support learners systems thinking in secondary and higher education. Each chapter in the book elaborates on different theoretical and methodological frameworks pertaining to complexity in biology education and a variety of biological topics are included from genetics, photosynthesis, and the carbon cycle to ecology and climate change. Specific attention is paid to design elements of computer-based learning environments to understand complexity in biology education.

PEOPLE form habits which cause nervous strain. When these habits have fixed themselves for long enough upon their victims, the nerves give way and severe depression or some other form of nervous prostration is the result. If such an illness turns the attention to its cause, and so starts the sufferer toward a radical change from habits which cause nervous strain to habits which bring nervous strength, then the illness can be the beginning of better and permanent health.

This book highlights those aspects of Vygotskian theory which are most cogent to Science Education, including the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), concept development, play and imagination. Whilst these and other Vygotskian constructs apply to both research and practice in all forms of Science Education, this book employs a specific and critical focus on one or two key concepts for each context. Thus play and imagination are explored in depth in the chapter on science in early childhood learning, the ZPD is considered in depth in the primary school science chapter, and concept development in the secondary-level chapter. Chapters on higher education science learning and teaching, science teacher education, informal science learning, science education research, and the scientific endeavour itself draws on those aspects of Vygotskian theory which relate most closely. This book makes an important contribution to Vygotskian theory. Never before has it been applied so widely and comprehensively to the field of science and STEM education. The book is intended for students and academics in science and STEM education and the social sciences. It is also of interest to Vygotsky scholars and those involved in the analysis of pedagogic practice within and beyond science and STEM education.

This thesis explores the nature of addiction and addictive behaviour. It does so from the perspective of Classical Greek philosophy. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time that philosophy from this period of history been used to gain a comprehensive understanding of addiction and addictive behaviour.4 The aim of the thesis is threefold. Firstly, to construct a theory of addiction founded on Classical Greek philosophy. Secondly, to increase current understanding of addiction through an awareness of Classical Greek philosophy and thirdly, to encourage the study of addiction and other aspects of human behaviour from the perspective of Classical Greek philosophy.

Anyone concerned with the history, tradition, and culture of our built environment will sooner or later come across the term 'Public Humanities'. At the interface between academe and the media-oriented culture industry, Public Humanities is established as a field of inquiry in the US and is increasingly becoming so in Europe too.Whether this field of research remains a product of Western culture will only become apparent in the coming years. However, linking architectural debate with the humanities is an important concern of the papers collected here. These essays on architectural theory provide academic food for thought while encouraging reflection on the discipline of architecture and stimulating urban design in the twenty-first century. The lectures collected here are from a class on Public Humanities at Brown University.
World Conception is a work of conceptions (PHILOSOPHY). It deals mainly with conceptual development (PHYSICS), conceptual representation (LINGUISTICS), and conceptual management (SYSTEMATICS). In other words, it is about the development of bodies, the representation of ideas, and the management of categories. And all of that is conveyed thru a system for the Physical development of the world (the magnetic system), a system for the Mental representation of the world (the ideographic system), and a system for the Social government of the world (the tabular system). These systems lead to a unifying view of the world. My Ruccian friend, if you are curious about a unifying view of our world, this is the book for you. In its chronological version, it is not an easy read; but, in the end, it'll be worth it. The Chronological Version of WORLD is an account of how my system developed. The separate volumes are in relation to the years they were produced. (In order to be able to handle the digital files with some ease, it was necessary to divide this account into 5 volumes.) I hope to produce a Subject-Related or Topical Version in the future, where the separate volumes will be in relation to the topics discussed. WARNING: Given the size of tables, the electronic version of WORLD will not work on a small e-reader. You have to use a large tablet or a computer. And, for a better experience, you could set the page display at 200%.
