Organizations are continuously trying to improve by reducing cost, increasing customer satisfaction, and creating an environment of empowered employees who continuously strive for excellence in each process and product. In much the same way, governments are continuously required to do "more with less," enhance budget and organizational performance, and identify innovative ways to increase their impact. There are challenges to applying the Lean-Six Sigma (LSS) tools in the public sector. Examples of these challenges include hierarchical environments, a lack of common goals, and the complexity of working in the public sector. The information included as part of this book provides over 30 spotlights highlighting project examples, lessons learned, and tips and tricks for using LSS in the public sector. These spotlights are based on interviews facilitated with a robust sampling of senior operations strategy practitioners. The LSS methodology focuses on eliminating waste (lean) and then reducing variation (Six Sigma) in a process or product that contains no waste. The information covered in this book will allow someone to have an immediate impact in any public sector organization. It describes some of the most powerful continuous process improvement tools that can be used, with limited training required. This is further enhanced by showing direct correlations to the LSS tools and the challenges that will be faced.Because the public sector spans such a diverse range of organizational charters (such as transportation, education, and defense), this book does not focus solely on either manufacturing or services. Rather, it provides a balanced approach to utilizing LSS in all environments.
For decades, this book has served as a guide to organizations that document their continuous improvement efforts using Baldrige Award-type management systems. Readers will learn what each area of the system means for organizations and how the synergy between process-oriented parts-leadership; strategy; customers; measurement, analysis, and knowledge management; workforce; and operations-can lead to excellent performance results. This book provides a valuable, step-by-step approach to help identify and put in place properly focused continuous improvement systems.Seven types of information are provided in this book for each of the Items in Categories 1 through 7 of the 2021-2022 Baldrige Framework and Performance Excellence Criteria:1. Data integrity is a global mandatory requirement for the regulated healthcare industry. It is more than a mere expectation-it's a basic element of good documentation practices, one of the most fundamental pillars of a quality management system. Robustness and accuracy of the data submitted by manufacturers to regulatory authorities when bringing a medical product to market are crucial. The purpose of this book is to consolidate existing data integrity principles and expectations from several regulatory sources-including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, World Health Organization, and European Medicines Agency-into a single and handy document that provides detailed, illustrative implementation guidance. It serves as a means of understanding regulatory agencies' position on good data management and the minimum expectation for how medical product manufacturers can achieve compliance.
A straightforward explanation of root cause analysis and systems thinking, illustrating, with real-world examples and first-hand accounts, why things can 'slip through our fingers' and what to do to reduce the chances of things going off track.Beyond the Five Whys summarises, for the first time, many of the tried and tested ways of understanding problems using insights from aviation, high reliability organisations and a range of thought-provoking sources. The book provides readers with a clear and structured explanation how to analyse setbacks and head off problems in the first place. It will challenge much of the received wisdom, such as the idea there can be one root cause or that a person or bad culture could be a root cause.Specific areas covered:* Learn what root causes are, how they differ from immediate and contributing causes and why it's so important to go beyond the Five Whys technique for root cause analysis.* Recalibrate the way you think about things going wrong, incorporating insights from systems thinking, so you can be clearer what 'cultural' or systemic problems mean in practice.* Learn about the eight principal ways things can slip through our fingers.* Go beyond the blame game and firefighting to avoid the never ending cycle of repeating issues.* Strengthen your ability to read the output of a 'lessons learned' or enquiry report.* Get a fresh perspective, using these techniques, on why the Titanic tragedy turned out so badly, and understand the numerous parallels between what happened then and a range of recent setbacks we have seen, such as the Covid 19 pandemic.* Consider the broader application of these techniques to some of the challenges we face in the 21st century.Beyond the Five Whys also contains supplemental guidance how to make improvements in an organisation. It is of value to business managers and those in specialist roles such as GRC, ESG, risk, compliance, quality, project management, H&S, IT, and internal audit roles.

This book is written for the Six Sigma Black Belt who needs an understanding of many statistical methods but does not use all of these methods every day. It is intended to be used as a quick reference, providing basic details, step-by-step instructions, and Minitab statistical software instructions.Six Sigma Black Belts typically use a statistical program such as Minitab to perform calculations, but an understanding of the underlying statistics is still needed. Anybody can type data into a program; a Black Belt must be capable of understanding which hypothesis test is appropriate for a given use, as well as the assumptions that must be met to correctly perform the hypothesis test. The methods presented here are laid out according to the Six Sigma DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) phases in which they are typically used. However, these methods can also be applied outside of a Six Sigma project, such as when one simply needs to determine whether there is a difference in the means of two processes producing the same parts.A Six Sigma Black Belt using Statistics for Six Sigma Black Belts will be able to quickly zero in on appropriate methods and follow the examples to reach the correct statistical conclusions.

Recent decades have seen wide changes in how quality standards are applied in industry. We now have two functions: quality assurance and process improvement. Quality assurance focuses primarily on product quality, while process improvement focuses on process quality; the principles of quality cost support both. The purpose of this book remains the same as the third edition: to provide a basic understanding of the principles of quality cost. Using this book, organizations can develop and implement a quality cost system to fit their needs. Used as an adjunct to overall financial management, these principles will help maintain vital quality improvement programs over extended timeframes. This fourth edition now includes information on the quality cost systems involved with the education, service, banking, and software development industries. You'll also find new material on ISO 9001, cost systems in small businesses, and activity-based costing. Additional information on team-based problem-solving, customer satisfaction and the costs involved with the defense industry are also offered.
A thermal imager is used to detect radiation (heat) originating from an object, convert it to temperature, and display an image of the temperature distribution. This process is known as infrared thermography. Thermograms-illustrations of the detected temperature distribution-allow the observation of heat-producing objects that are invisible to the unaided eye. It is extensively utilized in building diagnostics, medical imaging, law enforcement, and security imaging, as well as predictive maintenance and condition monitoring. This book contains over hundred of photos taken for several industrial equipment from several plants: fertilizer, chemical, and crystal-glass making that will help the practitioners identify different types of failures for different types of equipment including pumps, compressors, transformers, engines, motors,...etc. The book also have examples of application in construction, medical and civil fields.
Waste is anything that uses resources but offers the customer nothing in return. Most activities are waste, or "muda," and can be divided into two categories. Although type one muda does not provide value, it is inescapable given the production assets and technologies available today. An illustration would be checking welds for safety, that type we also call necessary non value-added activity. Type two muda does not add value and can be quickly eliminated. An illustration is a process in a process village with disconnected phases that may be swiftly converted into a cell where unnecessary material moves and inventory are no longer necessary. A very small portion of all value-stream activities truly generate value as perceived by the client. The most effective way to boost business performance is to stop doing the numerous unnecessary things. In order to cut costs during the economic downturn, many businesses are implementing abstinence policies. This could mean laying off workers and cutting some wages. In fact, those actions might only work for a short time.Unless the company implements a culture of continuous improvement and alters its method of operation, the situation may recur and become even worse. This brings us back to the purpose for which the Toyota production system was developed.
