A powerful and urgent explanation and vindication of our human rights and freedomsAfter the devastation of World War Two, the international community came together to enshrine fundamental rights to refuge, health, education and living standards, for privacy, fair trials and free speech, and outlawing torture, slavery and discrimination. Their goal was greater global justice, equality, and peace. That settlement is now in danger, attacked by opponents from across the political spectrum and populist and authoritarian movements worldwide. We are threatened by wars, inequality, new technologies and climate catastrophe, and we need our human rights now more than ever. In this powerful, accessible book, Shami Chakrabarti, lawyer, parliamentarian and leading British human rights defender, shows us why human rights are essential for our future. Outlining the historic national and international struggles for human rights, from the fall of Babylon, to the present day, Chakrabarti is an indispensable guide to the law and logic underpinning human dignity and universal freedoms. Her intervention will engage both sceptics and supporters, equipping believers in the battle of ideas and persuading doubters to think again. For human rights to survive, they must be far better understood by everyone.
In the first comprehensive account of the Supreme Court¿s race-related jurisprudence, a distinguished historian and a renowned civil rights lawyer scrutinize a legacy too often blighted by racial injustice. Discussing nearly 200 cases in historical context, the authors show the Court can still help fulfill the nation¿s promise of equality for all.
This book examines the Islamic headscarf cases of the Court of Justice of the European Union and places these in context of the Islamophobia existing across Europe. It assesses how EU law can best protect women who want to wear headscarves at work for religious reasons and why this protection is important not only for the women but also for the EU.
"Renowned social justice advocate john a. powell persuasively argues that we have not achieved a post-racial society and that there is much work to do to redeem the American promise of inclusive democracy. Culled from a decade of writing about social justice and spirituality, these meditations on race, identity, and social policy provide an outline for laying claim to our shared humanity and a way toward healing ourselves and securing our future. With an updated foreword and brand new chapter on polarization, this revised edition continues to challenge us to replace the attitudes and institutions that promote and perpetuate social suffering with those that foster relationships and a way of being that transcends disconnection and separation"--
This book explores the link between government debt and women's rights. Experts from academia, civil society and international organisations highlight how economic policies worsen gender inequalities and propose a feminist approach to debt issues. It is an essential resource for comprehending the intricate connection between economics and gender.

What is artistic freedom? Something you take for granted in the Nordic countries? Yes, most people would probably say. But perhaps this is not the case at all? After all, does freedom really feel completely free when you as an artist need to please large foundations or well-established museums? How do you express yourself artistically in hyper-sensitive times? And in which direction is art moving towards in a digital age? This anthology explores artistic freedom through a wide variety of texts. All contributors are concerned with the topic – each in their own way – ranging from the legal and practical aspects to the personal and experiential. Like a kaleidoscope, the anthology illuminates different ways of looking at the subject. The anthology is published by a/nordi/c – a think tank that from 2021-2023 worked to bring the practice of the art world and the political reality closer together. The following people have written contributions in the book:CARSTEN STAURANNI SYRJÄLÄINENSARA WHYATTFREDERIK TYGSTRUPADELHEID ESHITOK SEYFARTH GULBRANDSENKHALED BARAKEHJENNI LAITISANDRA WEILOLE REITOVHEIKI RIIPINENANNA JUULCHRISTIAN VILLUMKRISTOFFER ØRUMSTINA GUSTAFSSONELINE SIGFUSSONSIGNE WULFF
The Church is commonly spoken of as an institutional reality, but much less frequently recognized as a spiritual and heavenly reality called by God " to make disciples of all nations." (Mt. 28:19) This modest work furthers the development of a structured and integrated Christian Orthodox political thought, whereby the Church is neither sidelined as having no relevance to this present life, nor dominated by temporal questions or popular movements at the expense of its eternal salvific mission. The author seeks to ground the mission of the Church in the present world both on an understanding of God as Trinity and in Her mission to baptize diverse cultures. To do this effectively the Church must recognize and adapt to local and contemporary political and social trends and patterns. It must exemplify the Gospel as a way of communal and social life, not allowing itself to be reduced to an impersonal ideology manifest within the sphere of either imagination, ideology, or a private individualistic existence.

""Lawfare" describes the systematic use and abuse of legal procedure for political ends which, in post-genocide Rwanda, contributed to the making of dictatorship. Jens Meierhenrich explains how and why Paul Kagame's Tutsi-led government in the period 1994-2019 learned to substitute law for war in its consolidation of authoritarian rule"--
In contemporary constitutional politics, Section 1 of the Fourteenth Amendment--which includes the citizenship, privileges and immunities, due process, and equal protection clauses--is the star of the show. But this was not the focus for the Republican members of the Thirty-Ninth Congress. Their interest was instead in Sections 2, 3, and 4. Today we tend to think the purpose of the Fourteenth Amendment was to protect persons of color. But the Republicans engaged in Reconstruction saw its purpose as preventing "rebel rule" by punishing treason and rewarding loyalty, particularly the loyalty of white men who remained faithful to the Union during the Civil War.In this first of three planned volumes for the University Press of Kansas's Constitutional Thinking series, Mark A. Graber aims to restore to contemporary memory the Fourteenth Amendment drafted by those Republican and Unionist members of Congress who supported congressional reconstruction. In Punish Treason, Reward Loyalty, Graber breaks new ground researching Reconstruction, the Fourteenth Amendment, and constitutionalism by highlighting the importance of Sections 2, 3, and 4 to the representatives in the Thirty-Ninth Congress and their relative indifference to Section 1. His work underscores the importance and impact that legislative primacy and partisan supremacy had to Republican constitutional thinking about constitutional authority immediately after the Civil War.Centered on Reconstruction and constitutional reform, Graber shows anew the Republican effort to prevent rebel rule by empowering and protecting loyalty.
This concise but comprehensive book engagingly summarizes both the broad themes and specific tenets of First Amendment law, and the strongest arguments for and against protecting controversial speech such as hate speech and disinformation. It explains the many speech-protective legal rules that emerged during the Civil Rights era, demonstrating how essential free speech is for other human rights.
The full text of this decision is vitally important for anyone who cares about reproductive justice and public health. With every new decision from a court or regulatory agency regarding abortion drugs comes an opportunity both for progress and for setbacks. It can be difficult as a layperson to keep up with these developments. By studying court briefs and rulings related to lawsuits against the FDA concerning mifepristone use in abortions, readers will gain a better understanding of what goes into current regulations around medication-assisted abortions- why they exist, why they are currently being challenged by plaintiffs, and what the future may hold.AI summary:The document is a district court decision related to lawsuits challenging the FDA's approval and regulation of chemical abortion drugs, specifically mifepristone. The plaintiffs in these cases argue that the FDA's actions have been unlawful and have put women's health at risk. They also claim that the FDA's decisions violate federal law, including the Comstock Act, which prohibits the mailing of items designed to produce abortions. The court rulings and legal briefs provide detailed analyses of the legal arguments and precedents involved in each case. One of the court rulings declares the FDA's approval of chemical abortion drugs under Subpart H to be unlawful, as chemical abortion drugs do not meet the requirements of Subpart H, which allows for the accelerated approval of drugs that treat serious or life-threatening illnesses and provide a meaningful therapeutic benefit. The court determined that pregnancy, which is not an illness, cannot be considered a serious or life-threatening illness. The court also found that chemical abortion drugs do not provide a meaningful therapeutic benefit over surgical abortion. The decision presents arguments against the use of chemical abortion drugs, specifically mifepristone, citing concerns about safety and efficacy. The document highlights several cases where women experienced complications or even death after using the drugs, including misdiagnosed ectopic pregnancies and misdated gestational ages. The document argues that FDA approval of mifepristone was based on incomplete or insufficient information, and that the agency ignored its own prior findings about the drug's safety concerns.Overall, the decision highlights the ongoing legal battles over the FDA's regulation of chemical abortion drugs and the complex legal arguments involved ¿¿in these cases. The full text of this decision is vitally important for anyone who cares about reproductive justice and public health. It was an awful wintery day when police were called to investigate an alleged inside job. The call and subsequent investigation lead to the discovery of a dead millionaire. When local news gives their opinion of the possible motive, the Henson Family finds themselves searching for justice, in more ways than one, for a murder that is personal to them all. Years later, a school assignment triggers Axel Henson to investigate whether or not his own brother was involved. When his brother's defeats start to pile up, the family ends up relying on a less than perfect system of legislators, science, and exonerations, which drive Axel to fight on. Despite the conviction that closes the case file, Axel digs deeper to expose the manipulations that con the uninformed into waiving away their fundamental rights.

This project has come to fruition after many discussions about the social injustice in this world. The time has come for eyes to open to what people of color live with on a daily basis and all of their lives. This truly is a cradle to grave lifestyle as a means of survival.
