Obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally and presents a major challenge to policy makers and clinicians alike. Recent research has suggested that obesity has its origins in early life and that early diet can programme a developing fetus' and young infant's future susceptibility to obesity.  This volume contains recent findings presented at the International Conference on Early Nutrition Programming and Health Outcomes in Later Life: Obesity and Beyond - a satellite meeting of the 15th European Congress on Obesity, held in Budapest in April 2007. Basic scientific research, data from epidemiological studies and clinical trial results were all presented during the programme.This volume includes articles discussing the evidence for an effect of early nutrition programming on later obesity and cardiovascular risk; the growing evidence for an intergenerational cycle of obesity; the role of maternal leptin in programming appetite; possible cellular mechanisms for altered energy balance, including mitochondrial programming and the effects of regulators of metabolism; and how epigenetic changes might be the fundamental underlying mechanism explaining programming effects. Consumer understanding of the concept of early nutrition programming and the extent to which early nutrition programming is taken into account in infant feeding policies are also discussed.

In keeping with goal and style of the Handbook in Modern Biophysics series, the proposed book will maintain a chapter structure that contains two parts: concepts and biological application. The book also integrates all the chapters into a smooth, continuous discourse. The first and second chapters establish the mathematical methods and theoretical framework underpinning the different topics in the rest if the book. Other chapters will use the theoretical framework as a basis to discuss optical and NMR approaches. Each chapter will contain innovative didactic elements that facilitate teaching, self-study, and research preparation (key points, summary, exercise, references).

This edited volume contains a selection of chapters that are an outgrowth of the - ropean Conference on Mathematical and Theoretical Biology (ECMTB05, Dresden, Germany, July 2005). Die Wissenschaftsredaktion im SWR entwickelte eine Fernsehreihe zum Thema Alternative Medizin im Test. Ziel war es, die Zuschauer moglichst umfassend uber die Qualitat der verschiedenen Heilmethoden zu informieren. Das Buch orientert sich am Aufbau dieser Fernsehreihe. Hierin sind 21 Methoden zusammengestellt, die das Eypertengremium der Sendereihe beurteilt und bewertet hat. Das Gremium besteht aus 6 Arzten, die auf dem Gebiet der Naturheilkunde forschen. Alle Verfahren werden beschrieben. Punkte vergaben die Experten in 4 Kategorien: fur das Erklarungsmodell, die wissenschaftlichen Nachweise, das Ausbildungsniveau und die Risiken, die mit der Methode verbunden sind. Auerdem enthalt das Buch einen ausfuhrlichen Adressenteil und Tips fur den Umgang mit der Krankenkasse.

In 1994, in my role as Technical Program Chair for the 17th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, I solicited proposals for mini-symposia to provide delegates with accessible summaries of important issues in research areas outside their particular specializations. Terry Peters and his colleagues submitted a proposal for a symposium on Fourier Trans­ forms and Biomedical Engineering whose goal was "to demystify the Fourier transform and describe its practical application in biomedi­ cal situations". This was to be achieved by presenting the concepts in straightforward, physical terms with examples drawn for the parti­ cipants work in physiological signal analysis and medical imaging. The mini-symposia proved to be a great success and drew a large and appreciative audience. The only complaint being that the time allocated, 90 minutes, was not adequate to allow the participants to elaborate their ideas adequately. I understand that this feedback helped the authors to develop this book.

Nature learned long ago how useful proteins are as a diverse set of building blocks to make materials with very diverse properties. Over the past ten years, a number of cytokines and growth factors have proven to be as effective therapeutics. While these products have certainly established recombinant biologics as a major pharmaceutical growth sector, the continued interest in this class of drugs arises from the fact that today we have a far better understanding of the human immune response, both at a cellular and molecular level. This has resulted in a more methodical characterisation of these factors which has given clinical researchers an opportunity to plan Phase 1 clinical trials that can provide substantial information on the activity of the cytokine in humans. Currently, a great deal of effort is also being channelled into identifying cytokines from the various DNA databases.
