Eating disorders involve complex psychological processes linked to self-worth that may challenge many mental health and allied practitioners, no matter how experienced. It is a topic little taught in clinical practice, and much of the information on the subject can seem contradictory or even inaccurate. Yet it is vital when working with such a client to have a solid understanding of what helps people improve their relationship with food and feel good about their bodies and themselves.Based on extensive clinical experience and the latest evidence base, this new work from noted eating disorder specialist Dr Vivienne Lewis supports mental health practitioners who may be unsure how best to handle the issue in their daily practice. Throughout the book, clients' voices shine through in numerous brief real-life stories, illustrating the personal and practical impacts of eating disorders and successful recovery. It is relevant for psychologists, counsellors, nurses, youth workers, psychiatrists, doctors, dieticians and trainees and includes sections on:¿ Understanding complex client presentations.¿ Challenging common myths about eating disorders.¿ Structuring therapeutic sessions.¿ Motivating clients to change.¿ The importance of supervision.Clinical psychologist Dr Vivienne Lewis has spent more than 20 years in private practice and academia, specialising in treating people with eating disorders and training other health professionals. Her knowledge, skills and compassion have helped children, young people, and adults face and defeat the destructive mental and physical effects of eating disorders and improve body image. Vivienne knows the professional challenges of working with these clients well but also understands the reward for practitioners is seeing someone who is very unwell go on to live a healthy and fulfilling life.
This book explores the various applications of systemic understanding in practice. Each chapter covers diverse working contexts and existential life dilemmas, tackling subjects such as: systemic work with individuals, single session family therapy, experiences of adult longing, the therapeutic relationship as a form of love, working systemically with experiences of marginalisation, cultural difference and diversity, the integration of recent neuroscience developments with systemic therapy with couples, the role of forgiveness and the spiritual dimension in therapy. Throughout, this book promotes hope by presenting new horizons and providing room for reflection on uncertainty, change, opportunities, inter-connections and differences. Theoretical expansion of these existential issues lies both at the heart of systemic work and on the leading edge of research and theory-practice linking, showing how the integration of research with new developments across the broader fieldsof psychotherapy and counselling can be held within a systemic relational umbrella.
Clients enter therapy grappling with a range of difficulties. They don't speak in diagnostic terms, but instead focus on the everyday problems that confront them. Their struggles may include isolation, loneliness, anxiety, guilt and regret, and problems making decisions in a world that offers seemingly endless choice. In contrast, the cognitive-behavior therapist is trained in the language of conditioning and extinction, avoidance and safety behaviors, behavioral activation and attentional biases. This book explores the ideas of the existentialist philosophers as a bridge between the suffering client and technically trained clinician. The volume is not a rejection of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), but seeks to place CBT in the broader context of the most popular philosophic tradition of the 19th and 20th centuries. Therapists versed in existentialism argue that the individual's starting point is characterized by a sense of disorientation in the face of an apparently meaningless and absurd world. Each individual must become solely responsible for giving meaning to life and living it passionately and authentically. Each of us must confront the 'Big 5' existential issues of death, isolation, identity, freedom and meaning and find our solutions to these problems. The present volume explores each of these existential themes in turn. Each section opens with a theoretical chapter describing the relevant existential dilemma and its impact on human experience. The second chapter in each section explores its relationship to mental health disorders and psychopathology. The third chapter in each section explores the evidence for treating the existential issue from a CBT framework. This book will be of value to those interested in CBT, philosophy and mental health, and will appeal to psychotherapists, clinical psychologists and psychiatrists.
The Co-Regulation Revolution, from master somatic psychotherapist and author Beth Dennison, is both co-regulation theory and applied psychology (simple practices to use right away). It is the latest work in her life-long study of shame, healthy relationships, embodiment, and clinical trauma work.In therapy and in life, we can rewire our nervous systems for mutual regulation (co-regulation). This is essential for authentic, embodied relating, healing PTSD, effective collaboration, and building our capacity for social justice. With The Co-Regulation Revolution and Body Up Co-Regulation, Beth gives practitioners clear maps and concrete tools to: ¿ Heal from shame and developmental trauma with safe, appropriate, embodied connection.¿ Build greater capacity for co-regulation and resilience at the nervous system level. ¿ Replace compulsive competition for status on the ladder of white supremacy culture with healthy, peer relationships. ¿ Prevent burnout - because co-regulation is only co-regulation when it is good for both people. Body Up Co-Regulation (BCR) draws from interpersonal neurobiology, Somatic Experiencing, trauma healing, Bodynamics, peer counseling, and yoga. The practices are therapeutic, diagnostic, and regulatory. What could be a better therapeutic outcome than teaching clients to have relationships that nourish both people? How much more will you thrive in your practice when your client relationships are good for you, too?Interpersonal neurobiology and polyvagal theory have brought profound insights into psychology and psychotherapy regarding how essential our relationships are, including our own somatic body/mind relationship. As therapists, social workers, leaders, and teachers - we are positioned to help people build healthy, collaborative relationships that support social justice work and help heal attachment issues and complex PTSD. Clinical practitioners who train in Body Up Co-regulation find the work to be: "simple and powerful," "brilliant and uplifting," "invaluable for authentic communication," "safe and non-judgmental," and "incredibly helpful in a variety of real-life situations."Reading this book can orient you to a whole new way of relating and doing therapy. Practicing the exercises will change your patterns of relating. Training in BCR is a deep dive into the subtle and potent world of working nervous system to nervous system. In BCR practice, one person leads, and one mirrors, in a simple 1-2-minute exercise. They speak about their experience and then switch roles. This cultivates our capacity for peer relating and embodiment in relational space. It sounds simple, yet the layers of somatic learning and mutual regulation pave the way for a Co-Regulation Revolution - a cumulative, profound change in how we live and relate, together.

¿ Urvertrauen, Symbole, rituelle Handlungsweisen. ¿ Was sind spirituelle Erleuchtungserfahrungen?

In between sessions, Fletcher struggles to balance his own well-being with that of his patients as details from his sometimes messy but always heartfelt personal life reveal that therapists aren't immune to getting tripped up by the same hurdles as the rest of us"--
