The book covers 75 autopsy-based cases (about 75) of common and uncommon presentations of various cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). It emphasizes the importance of the autopsies, which have played a pivotal role in the understanding of the pathology and hence the clinical manifestations of several CVDs. The book attempts to present the material from the perspective of the autopsy table. It uses the clinical data as the initial framework and the autopsy findings to develop a true understanding of the disease and the associated pathophysiology of the condition with final clinico-pathological correlation. Each case covers a complete journey of the deceased patient concisely under the following headings-title, clinical history, autopsy findings and discussion, which includes a brief review of the literature. The text is accompanied by relevant high-quality macroscopic and microscopic images. The book is relevant for specialists in pathology, cardiology, cardiac surgery, internal medicine, critical care and pediatrics

This book provides an overview of emerging CSF management systems that filter or clear cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) as a therapeutic approach for several CNS conditions. While the term "liquorpheresis" most accurately refers to extracorporeal procedures that filter CSF (similar to plasmapheresis), this book covers any method based on devices that -either alone or in combination with drugs- can clear CSF or enhance its turnover, which in turn dilutes toxins. The book begins with an overview of CSF anatomy and physiology, followed by a discussion of the role of CSF clearance and flow dysfunction in various CNS conditions. The next section describes the different CSF management systems and procedures that are currently available or under development. The book then reviews the potential applications of these systems for treating subarachnoid hemorrhage, CNS infections, meningeal carcinomatosis, autoimmune encephalitis, polyradiculomyelitis, and neurodegenerativediseases. Finally, a chapter discusses future advances in liquorpheresis systems and applications. This book is intended for clinicians, neuro-researchers, academics, and students who are interested in the development and application of CSF management systems. It is also relevant to the medical device industry, particularly those that develop apheresis and CSF management devices, and the drug-delivery industry.
This comprehensive book addresses the acute emergencies in neuromuscular disease from a novel perspective, focusing on clinical management and treatment of these disorders rather than the more traditional neuropathology, neurogenetics, and neurophysiology approaches. The book fills the gap in guidelines by providing an evidence-based guidance for the clinical adult or pediatric neurologist confronted by an acutely ill patient in a potentially life-threatening situation. The book is structured according to pathophysiological principles, but each chapter is strictly organised around case vignettes that emphasize clinical relevance allowing the non-specialist to access complex scientific backgrounds. The electronic supplementary material and multimedia are provided as an integral tool to facilitate accessibility and understanding of a notoriously difficult field of neurology. Finally, the role of patients, who are increasingly involved in many management decisions, is highlighted in a chapter on ethical issues discussing withholding or withdrawing life-sustaining therapy, patient end-of-life values, wishes and preferences, and on advanced directives. The publication is aimed equally at the non-specialist neurologist in frontline clinical practice confronted by a rare disorder needing immediate management decisions, at the clinical specialist referring for guidance in specific management aspects, and at the specialist researcher keen to maintain clinic relevance.

The astrological sign, Scorpio, is not known for its pleasantries as Mouse discovers in this true story of a life highlighted by challenges physical, emotional, and sexual. But, as the reader will discover, she is more than up to the task.
Competitiveness, like all things, is a practice. But I was born with it baked in, a head start, a small beast locked in a too-small cage, snarling at the bars whenever there was a task at hand. My mother started feeding it young. Maybe she'd learnt what my father had always known: that I might have to work twice as hard to have half as much.Rebecca was born a ?freedom baby', a child whose birth coincided with the fall of the apartheid regime in South Africa, to a white mother and Black father. She was in-between, a breathing blend of her parents' skin, well-acquainted with that unsettling sense of non-belonging from an early age. But the water welcomed her strong body and she caught the eye of coaches at swimming schools in the UK. Fuelled by a natural competitiveness honed on the sharp edge of her mother's love, Rebecca plunged into the hothouse of British swimming, and soon was persuaded to swap sporting nationalities, leaving Kenya behind to pledge allegiance to Great Britain. Rebecca learns that training is designed to be punishing - to break down, excoriate, and puncture pain barriers. She learns that to swim a perfect race is to experience a sort of ecstatic communion between body and liquid world. And she also learns that her body, her Black body, is a commodity that other people feel entitled to, whose performance is constantly scrutinised, debated, and subjected to a racism both universal and endemic to the white world of swimming.
