    "Dyr og mennesker" fra 1911 er Carl Hagenbecks erindringsværk. Da Hagenbeck fyldte 14 år og fik en isbjørn og et par sæler af sin far, dedikerede han sit liv til at rejse verden rundt og købe og sælge eksotiske dyr. Faderen ejede allerede en dyreforretning i Hamborg, som hurtigt blev udvidet med rovdyr, krybdyr og havdyr. Forretningen udviklede sig med tiden til en egentlig zoologisk have, og med Hagenbecks filosofi om at basere dyrenes dressur på tillid frem for pisk og genskabe dyrenes naturlige habitat blev "Tierpark Hagenbeck" en sensation. Bogen er udgivet som historisk dokument med datidens sprogbrug.Carl Hagenbeck (1844-1913) var en tysk zoolog og regnes for at være de moderne zoologiske havers fader. En væsentlig filosofi for Hagenbeck var at genskabe dyrenes naturlige habitater og basere dressuren på tillid mellem dyr og menneske. Han grundlagde Tysklands mest succesfulde zoo, "Tierpark Hagenbeck", som den dag i dag stadig ligger i Hamborg. Hagenbeck døde af et alvorligt slangebid.
