This book revises and expands upon the prior edition, The Navier-Stokes Problem. The focus of this book is to provide a mathematical analysis of the Navier-Stokes Problem (NSP) in R^3 without boundaries. Before delving into analysis, the author begins by explaining the background and history of the Navier-Stokes Problem. This edition includes new analysis and an a priori estimate of the solution. The estimate proves the contradictory nature of the Navier-Stokes Problem. The author reaches the conclusion that the solution to the NSP with smooth and rapidly decaying data cannot exist for all positive times. By proving the NSP paradox, this book provides a solution to the millennium problem concerning the Navier-Stokes Equations and shows that they are physically and mathematically contradictive.

This monograph is devoted to the study of multiscale model reduction methods from the point of view of multiscale finite element methods. Multiscale numerical methods have become popular tools for modeling processes with multiple scales. These methods allow reducing the degrees of freedom based on local offline computations. Moreover, these methods allow deriving rigorous macroscopic equations for multiscale problems without scale separation and high contrast. Multiscale methods are also used to design efficient solvers. This book offers a combination of analytical and numerical methods designed for solving multiscale problems. The book mostly focuses on methods that are based on multiscale finite element methods. Both applications and theoretical developments in this field are presented. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers, who are interested in this topic.

This book presents and discusses the fundamental topic of classification of musical objects, such as chords, motifs, and gestures. Their classification deals with the exhibition of isomorphism classes. Our structure types include local and global constructions, the latter being similar to global structures in geometry, such as differentiable manifolds. The discussion extends to the role, which classification plays for the creative construction of musical compositions. Our examples include references to classical compositions, such as Beethoven¿s sonatas, and some of the author¿s own compositions of classical and jazz styles. We also discuss software that enables the application of classification to musical creativity. The volume is addressed to an audience that would apply classification to programming and creative musical construction.

The developments in mesh generation are usually driven by the needs of new applications and/or novel algorithms. The last decade has seen a renewed interest in mesh generation and adaptation by the computational engineering community, due to the challenges introduced by complex industrial problems.Another common challenge is the need to handle complex geometries. Nowadays, it is becoming obvious that geometry should be persistent throughout the whole simulation process. Several methodologies that can carry the geometric information throughout the simulation stage are available, but due to the novelty of these methods, the generation of suitable meshes for these techniques is still the main obstacle for the industrial uptake of this technology. This book will cover different aspects of mesh generation and adaptation, with particular emphasis on cutting-edge mesh generation techniques for advanced discretisation methods and complex geometries.

This book contains plenary lectures given at the International Conference on Mathematical and Computational Modeling, Approximation and Simulation, dealing with three very different problems: reduction of Runge and Gibbs phenomena, difficulties arising when studying models that depend on the highly nonlinear behaviour of a system of PDEs, and data fitting with truncated hierarchical B-splines for the adaptive reconstruction of industrial models. The book includes nine contributions, mostly related to quasi-interpolation. This is a topic that continues to register a high level of interest, both for those working in the field of approximation theory and for those interested in its use in a practical context. Two chapters address the construction of quasi-interpolants, and three others focus on the use of quasi-interpolation in solving integral equations. The remaining four concern a problem related to the heat diffusion equation, new results on the notion of convexity in probabilistic metric spaces (which are applied to the study of the existence and uniqueness of the solution of a Volterra equation), the use of smoothing splines to address an economic problem and, finally, the analysis of poverty measures, which is a topic of increased interest to society. The book is addressed to researchers interested in Applied Mathematics, with particular reference to the aforementioned topics.

This book provides an overview of the emerging field of in situ visualization, i.e. visualizing simulation data as it is generated. In situ visualization is a processing paradigm in response to recent trends in the development of high-performance computers. It has great promise in its ability to access increased temporal resolution and leverage extensive computational power. However, the paradigm also is widely viewed as limiting when it comes to exploration-oriented use cases. Furthermore, it will require visualization systems to become increasingly complex and constrained in usage. As research efforts on in situ visualization are growing, the state of the art and best practices are rapidly maturing.Specifically, this book contains chapters that reflect state-of-the-art research results and best practices in the area of in situ visualization. Our target audience are researchers and practitioners from the areas of mathematics computational science, high-performance computing, and computer science that work on or with in situ techniques, or desire to do so in future.

Large sparse linear systems of equations are ubiquitous in science, engineering and beyond. This open access monograph focuses on factorization algorithms for solving such systems. It presents classical techniques for complete factorizations that are used in sparse direct methods and discusses the computation of approximate direct and inverse factorizations that are key to constructing general-purpose algebraic preconditioners for iterative solvers. A unified framework is used that emphasizes the underlying sparsity structures and highlights the importance of understanding sparse direct methods when developing algebraic preconditioners. Theoretical results are complemented by sparse matrix algorithm outlines. This monograph is aimed at students of applied mathematics and scientific computing, as well as computational scientists and software developers who are interested in understanding the theory and algorithms needed to tackle sparse systems. It is assumed that the reader has completed a basic course in linear algebra and numerical mathematics.

The book is designed for use in a graduate program in Numerical Analysis that includes a basic introductory course and subsequent more specialized courses. The latter is envisaged to cover numerical linear algebra, the numerical solution of ordinary and partial differential equations, and perhaps additional topics related to complex analysis, multidimensional analysis, in particular optimization, and functional analysis and related functional equations.Viewed in this context, the first four chapters of our book could serve as a text for the basic introductory course on the Python program, andthe remaining chapters could provide a text for an advanced course on the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations. Therefore, the book breaks with tradition in that it no longer attempts to deal with all major topics of numerical mathematics. Those dealing with linear algebra and partial differential equations have developed into major fields of study that have attained a degree of autonomy and identity that justifies their treatment in separate books and separate courses on the graduate level. The term "Numerical Analysis" as used in this book, therefore, is to be taken in the narrow sense of the numerical analog of Mathematical Analysis, comprising such topics as machine arithmetic, the approximation of functions, approximate differentiation and integration, and the approximate solution of nonlinear equations and ordinary differential equations. This book aims to provide a good understanding of Numerical engineering analysis and its applications and optimization. The book begins with studying the concept of Python fundamentals for scientific computing. It then presents their applications in the different configurations shown in lucid detail. For more details, please visit https://centralwestpublishing.com

This book provides readers with a deep understanding of the use of objective algorithms for integration of constitutive relations (CRs) for Hooke-like hypoelasticity based on the use of corotational stress rates. The purpose of objective algorithms is to perform the step-by-step integration of CRs using fairly large time steps that provide high accuracy of this integration in combination with the exact reproduction of superimposed rigid body motions. Since Hooke-like hypoelasticity is included as a component in CRs for elastic-inelastic materials (e.g., in CRs for elastic-plastic materials), the scope of these algorithms is not limited to hypoelastic materials, but extends to many other materials subjected to large deformations. The authors performed a comparative analysis of the performance of most currently available objective algorithms, provided some recommendations for improving the existing formulations of these algorithms, and presented new formulations of the so-called absolutely objective algorithms. The proposed book will be useful for beginner researchers in the development of economical methods for integrating elastic-inelastic CRs, as well as for experienced researchers, by providing a compact overview of existing objective algorithms and new formulations of these algorithms. The book will also be useful for developers of computer codes for implementing objective algorithms in FE systems. In addition, this book will also be useful for users of commercial FE codes, since often these codes are so-called black boxes and this book shows how to test accuracy of the algorithms of these codes for integrating elastic-inelastic CRs in modeling large rotations superimposed on the uniform deformation of any sample.
