Every attempt to examine our consciousness¿s passive life and its dynamic in its various forms inevitably intersects with our primal awareness of the future. Even though Husserl¿s theory of time-consciousness enjoys a certain fame, his conception of our primordial relation to the future has not been adequately accounted for.The book at hand aims to offer a close study of Husserl¿s view of protentional consciousness and to trace its unique contribution to our overall awareness of time. This book is a phenomenological investigation of the interrelations of tradition, memory, place and the body. Drawing upon philosophers such as Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, Gadamer, and Ricoeur, Janet Donohoe uses the idea of a palimpsest to argue that layers of the past are carried along as traditions, through places and bodies, such that we can speak of memory as being written upon place and place as being written upon memory. The Political Logic of Experience argues that experience and phenomenology are essentially political, with profound implications for our understanding of subjectivity, epistemology, experience, the phenomenological method, and politics. Drawing on work from across the phenomenological tradition, it develops an account of expression as the internal relationship uniting knowing, being, and doing with both transcendental conditions and empirical phenomena. This expressive unification generates subjectivity as an expression of particular communities and subjects as an expression of subjectivity.
