When God needed someone to deliver his children from Egyptian bondage he was called Almighty God, and he called Moses to accomplish that task. But he was known as I AM to Moses and Israel. This is where the BCBS Reader's Guide to the New Testament is different. To be sure, Anderson gives enough historical background, both of the New Testament world and each individual New Testament book, so that the reader can get a grasp of the general time period, but his ultimate focus is to help the reader understand the biblical text itself. He does this by doing a number of things with each New Testament book:1. He provides a brief explanation of the time of writing and authorship of each book, as is generally accepted in both biblical scholarship and Church Tradition.2. He provides a "Big Things to Know" section that highlights the major themes and literary imagery in each New Testament book. This essentially is a "heads up" to the reader to look out for these themes and images as he/she reads any given New Testament book.3. He provides a "Story Chart" or "Literary Map" of each New Testament book that gives the reader a visual of the overall flow of each New Testament book. This is extremely helpful, in that it helps the reader (a) follow the storyline in books like the Gospels and Acts, and (b) trace the argument that is being made in each New Testament letter.4. He then provides a "walkthrough" of each New Testament book, passage by passage, helping the reader understand how each New Testament book fits together as a coherent whole. 5. Finally, in the corresponding BCBS Reader's Guide to the New Testament Workbook, Anderson provides study/discussion questions for the reader as he/she reads through each book in the New Testament. The workbook can be used in individual study, a Sunday School or Bible Study small group, or a high school Bible class.

The life and work of Origen (c186-c254 CE) have always been considered important in relation to the transmission of the New Testament text. This is not just because he was a prolific writer who referred constantly to biblical texts, but also because of his geographical location in two of the most important centres of early Christian education, Alexandria and Caesarea. The task of collecting his citations and mapping these against known manuscripts is an important task and this book contributes to this process by looking specifically at the citations from the synoptic gospels that occur in the works of Origen that have survived in Greek. The citations, lemmata, adaptations and allusions have been collected and citations and lemmata compared against a selection of known manuscripts representing major text types including the so-called Caesarean text type. Statistical analysis has been undertaken to establish the level of agreement between Origen's text and known manuscripts, with further analysis undertaken to establish levels of agreement between the different manuscripts. The evidence suggests that Origen did not use one type of text for any one gospel. Indeed his works reveal instead the range of available text traditions in Caesarea at his time of writing.

When God liberated Israel from Egyptian slavery, He gave them 10 commandments by which to live at Mt. Sinai. He also gave the people 7 Holy Feasts to observe each year to commemorate and remember how He rescued them from servitude and persecution. These were called the 7 Feasts of Israel. Four were in the Spring and three were in the Fall.In the Old Testament, prophets wrote of a Jewish Messiah who would someday be sent from God to atone for their sins permanently.
