This book brings together two topics which have both been of increasing interest in different countries. The first refers to the quality of Religious Education as a school Subject (RE) in general, the second is about the education of teachers of RE and its possible contribution to better quality RE. There have been many public, and often controversial, debates concerning both of these topics. The chapters contained in this volume, however, are not meant to continue such debates (even if it is inevitable that they will contribute to these debates as well), but to make use of research, especially research on teacher education in the field of RE, in order to provide insights based not just on political or personal opinions, but on rigorous academic scholarship.
Christian education has all but disappeared from the majority of educational systems around the world. As governments limit or banish God from among our schools in the name of "separation of church and state," we find the very foundation upon which many schools began disintegrating before our eyes. This is not a new problem. Over the centuries people have had the same concern of what is true education and the place of religion in the educational system. Among these were the newly devoted Christians arising from the Great Advent movement sweeping North America during the 18th and 19th century. Author Alonzo T. Jones, an important figure in Great Advent movement, felt that Christians should take a solid look at the educational systems of that day.Jones believed that true Christian education was the only becoming choice to Christians. In The Place of the Bible in Education, he outlines according to the Bible what exactly Christian education looks like. He also explores the true meaning of the separation between church and state and how Christian education does not fall under such discrimination. In this book, he discusses how secular education falls short of even the true meaning of education and how this has an adverse affect on our young people. Jones shows how there is a Biblical precedent for true education and how the Bible should and can become part of the educational system.
Tending the Heart of Virtue sheds light on the power of classic children's tales to shape the moral imagination. This revised and expanded edition includes three new chapters on such stories as Hans Christian Andersen's The Ugly Duckling, the Grimms' Cinderella, and John Ruskin's The King of the Golden River.

Fran and Lloyd were asked to organize a children's worship to be called "Kings Kids". The purpose was to teach what the Church is, why it is, what its purpose is, how it is organized, and its destination. It didn't take long to find there no such material was available. So, Fran wrote the lessons each week that included the teachers study guide, puppet script, handwork, skits, and activities. The result is titled "THE WAY". Frances Durham was born in 1934, raised in Woodville, Texas, and graduated from Kirby High School. She was baptized into Christ when she was twelve and has been a faithful and productive Christian since. While still living in Woodville she met and married Lloyd Parr, who was in the Navy and stationed in San Diego, California, where they made their home. During their 20-year career in the military, four years in the Navy and sixteen in the Air Force, "Fran" lived in several different places including Okinawa and Turkey. No matter where they were, Fran was active in the Church, teaching the Bible to children's and ladies' classes. She also wrote articles and Bible studies for Christian Woman magazine, and VBS material for elementary age children for Lambert Book House. When Lloyd retired from the Air Force the family moved to Eldon, Missouri, where they attended the Oak Street Church of Christ.
