DesertedIn Pursuit of Dry Land? Dream away at the most beautiful desert landscapesThe desert lies bare - sparse and silent in the heavy stillness of the day, a wilderness that somehow manages to be both remote and yet strangely intimate. We seek to explore the gentle fragility of these ancient landscapes, uncovering the textures, colours, and light that plays out in shadows across the land. The creators of Rucksack Magazine bring you Deserted: In Pursuit of Drylands. In this study of the desert landscape, the visual and written stories portray places so vast that time and space are rendered meaningless. Featuring photography from locations such as Utah, the Atacama, the Namib Desert, and the Australian Outback, we showcase endless, open swathes of golden land that stretch beneath the burning sky and soar far beyond any possible human perception.
This edited book summarizes numerous research studies on remote sensing and GIS of natural resource management for the Himalaya region done by Indian Institutions and Universities over the last decade. It gives an overview of hydrometeorological studies on Himalayan water resources and addresses concerns in the development of water resources in this region, which is dealing with an increased pressure in population, industrialization and economic development. While the source of some of the major rivers of India are found in the Himalayas, the glaciers and water bodies in the region are continuously shrinking leading to a depletion of water and deterioration of water quality. This is affecting a population of up to 2.5 billion people. The ecosystems have been under threat due to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, expansion of agriculture and settlement, overexploitation of natural resources, habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, mining, construction of roads and large dams, and unplanned tourism. Spaceborne remote sensing with its ability to provide synoptic and repetitive coverage has emerged as a powerful tool for assessment and monitoring of the Himalayan resources and phenomena. This work serves as a resource to students, researchers, scientists, professionals, and policy makers both in India and on a global level.

What is it about penguins that makes them so lovable? Perhaps we identify with their almost-human gait on land, or their ability to survive in the harshest of climates, or their extremely social nature.Penguins is the rare book that combines a fabulous visual study of these creatures with up-to-date information on all seventeen species, from the largest (Emperor Penguin) to the tiniest (the aptly named Little Penguin). Through the text and pictures, the reader will learn all about life in their colonies, and how they live on land and sea, raise and feed their chicks, and manage their long, annual migrations.Brutus Östling's amazing photography completely captures the nature of these creatures. Looking at the images makes one feel as if the birds were posing for the camera; Östling has a knack for capturing them in the most natural of settings, going about their daily activities, at work or at play.
