Inspired by dioramas of wild flora and fauna found in natural history museums, Jim Naughten's digital reimaginations of a familiar yet alien world, explore the idea of wildlife becoming a lost fantasy. From orangutans swinging through psychedelic forests, to deer roaming pastel-hued canyons-Naughten's depictions of nature in an artificial color palette convey a distinct sense of dislocation and growing estrangement. His fantastical tableaus question our rose-tinted image of a natural world that is largely fictional. In fact we are entering the Eremozoic-a term coined by biologist and writer E. O. Wilson to describe the current era of mass extinction triggered by human activity. Also referred to as "The Age of Loneliness," the term alludes to the isolation that will follow the destruction of our deeply rooted relationships with other species.JIM NAUGHTEN (*1969, Horsham, Sussex) explores historical and natural history subject matters using photography, stereoscopy, and painting. Trained in both photography and painting, the London-based artist combines these backgrounds in a practice he refers to as "digital painting". Treating photographs like oil paintings on canvas, he uses digital enhancement to alter reality.
Now available in a new, large single volume with an appendix also listing the modern plant names, this classic collection by "the Audubon of botany" features more than 250 exquisite reproductions of Walcott's celebrated watercolors of wildflower life in the United States of America and Canada. What does it take to paint a wildflower that blooms for a single day in a deep forest? For Mary Vaux Walcott, it involved spending up to seventeen hours a day out of doors with her paintbox to capture the shape, movement, and colors of delicate petals and leaves. Originally published in 1925 to enormous acclaim in five, oversized volumes, Walcott's sketches introduced the diversity and beauty of North American plants to the general public. A selection of some of the most stunning illustrations are now available in a single volume, these illustrations have lost none of their beauty or realism. Walcott's technique involved precise attention to detail, color, light, and perspective. Her art can also be appreciated as the work of a woman scientist battling the prejudices against her gender that were common in her day. She was an intrepid explorer, skilled mountaineer, and generous benefactor to the Smithsonian Institution at a time when women's accomplishments were often overlooked or misattributed. As inspirational and informative as they are a pleasure for the eyes, this bouquet of nature's fleeting gifts is a lasting treasure of botanic and scientific artistry. Published in association with the Smithsonian Institution

After five years of working with bees on her farm in northern Alberta, Jenna Butler shares with the reader the rich experience of keeping hives. Starting with a rare bright day in late November as the bees are settling in for winter she takes us through a year in beekeeping on her small piece of the boreal forest. Weaving together her personal story with the practical aspects of running a farm she takes us into the worlds of honeybees and wild bees. She considers the twinned development of the canola and honey industries in Alberta and the impact of crop sprays, debates the impact of introduced flowers versus native flowers, the effect of colony collapse disorder and the protection of natural environments for wild bees. But this is also the story of women and bees and how beekeeping became Jenna Butler's personal survival story.
This STEM-based, illustrated nonfiction picture book introduces readers to several well-known animal and insect endlings, the last known survivors of a species, while discussing the mass extinction crisis facing our planet and what kids can do to make a difference.

A beautifully illustrated natural history memoir that reminds the reader that re-storying our relationship with the plants of home can be our first step in restoring the world. In a world made precarious by human mobility, all of us can learn from those who root in place. Plants surround us, yet all too often we ignore their quiet and complex lives. When a new job brings botanist and artist Lyn Baldwin back to her childhood home in southern British Columbia, she is challenged to confront both the cost of her mobility and the assumptions of her profession. If nearly three decades spent in motion gave Lyn scientific credentials and a career, it also made her a stranger to home and country. Lonely and homesick, Lyn runs outside. She doesn¿t go far¿rarely more than a day¿s drive from Kamloops, BC¿but within the pages of her field journal, the slow confluence of art and science allows Lyn to learn not just about but from the green wisdom of her neighbours.Tutored by the plants of forest and garden, wilderness and wetland, Lyn realizes that her botany never has been, and never will be, a placeless science. Instead, Drawing Botany Home gives Lyn the metaphors to reconcile the dark horror of settler/Indigenous relations and the hard edges of her own childhood: poverty, a traumatic fire, unwanted stepfathers, a hippie mother.

Many creatures are mystical. Althrough human beings know much biological information including the DNA, they cannot find the solution to all codes of nature. So we often imagine what a wondrous sight it would be if the dinosaur, the saber toothed tiger and the mammoth were still alive!Fortunately, we still have the giant panda. The giant panda has been around for 8 million years. It witnessed the evolution of the late Miocene and the test of the Quaternary glaciers. It was the flagship of the "giant panda-stegodon" animal group. The giant panda, has witnessed all the bygone secrets to which human beings want to have a clue. The harmonious and primeval beauty can be best reflected in the peacefully co-existing colors of black an white in the panda.Among hundreds of millions of people who love and care for the giant panda, Zhou Mengqi, photographer of this picture album, is a native of Chengdu, Sichuan Province, which is the habitat of the giant panda.
