The book that inspired Harrison Ford in his portrayal of Branch Rickey in the hit movie "42”In a brilliant match between author and subject, this latest addition to the Penguin Lives series features the inimitable Jimmy Breslin telling the rags-to-riches tale of Branch Rickey, the legendary manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers who integrated baseball by putting Jackie Robinson into the major leagues. Moving from the dusty Midwest towns where Rickey built baseball's farm system to the Brooklyn streets where he hatched his most famous plan, Breslin brilliantly captures the heady days when baseball became the national pastime. What emerges is the irresistible story of a schemer and redeemer, a great American who remade a sport-and dreamed of remaking a country. Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Health - Sport - Sport Economics, Sport Management, grade: 2,0, Pforzheim University, language: English, abstract: The competition between professional football clubs is increasing both on a national as well as on an international level. Clubs do not only experience pressure for sporting success but also for economic profitability. As sporting success can hardly be planned, the club¿s financial well-being needs to be ensured independently from results on the pitch. The rationale seems obvious, a club¿s higher popularity among fans leads to higher revenues. Football is the most popular sport in the world and almost half of the world¿s population is interested in the sport. With this in mind, it seems naive or even negligent that the majority of professional German football clubs keep on serving the national market only. Sounding like a repeated appeal, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, CEO of the most internationalised German football club FC Bayern Munich, describes internationalisation as ¿without any alternative¿. He continues by explaining ¿without growth on the international markets, you risk the sporting competitiveness¿. With a population of over 600 Million people and a high enthusiasm for football, Southeast Asia invites football clubs to start their internationalisation in the region. Hence only a structured approach and a thoughtful strategy are required to finally and successfully enter these promising markets.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Health - Sport - Sport Economics, Sport Management, grade: 1,3, University of Bath, language: English, abstract: The aim of this thesis is to transfer Muniz/O'Guinn's brand community concept to the sports market. Looking at the previous conception and definition of brand communities, those communities around the brands of sports organisations appear to be an ideal example. Hardly any other industry arouses so much interest and is of such great importance in the everyday life of customers with regard to the product or service and creates a more solid basis for social identification, interaction and emotional bonding than sports. The research question can be formulated as follows:To what extent can the concept of brand community be applied to sports brands and their surrounding community? What are the opportunities and risks of applying and adapting the concept to the sports industry for sports brand management? After a detailed theoretical derivation of the term "brand community" with reference to the concepts from marketing (branding) and sociology (consumer community) that constitute it, this work transfers the concept to the specificities of the sports market. Scientific studies on the management of sports brands as well as on community fan behaviour and sports consumption will be used. In a critical appraisal, the advantages and disadvantages of the brand community concept are evaluated and corresponding opportunities and risks for the use in the management sports brands. It is a choice between increased customer loyalty, enlarged brand value and efficient marketing on the one hand and counterproductive consumer behaviour, reduced brand value and uncontrollable marketing on the other hand.In the end, this work comes after a detailed exploratory research to the conclusion that the Brand Community concept has great potential for the management of the brands of sports organisations. Although there are other research is needed to adapt the model even more specifically to the specificities of to the needs of the sports market. But already it provides the manager of sports brands undreamt-of opportunities to exploit the close connection between sports consumers to make more efficient use of the sports brand and the strong surrounding community and to capitalize on it.

The Fundamentals of Sports Media and Sponsorship Sales: Developing New Accounts is a tutorial in narrative form that provides practical step-by-step instruction on how to develop new sports sponsors and advertisers. There's guidance covering the gamut from getting organized, identifying prospects, preparing for the first conversation, commanding the room when presenting a proposal and closing a piece of business. PricewaterhouseCooper forecasts media rights and sponsorship will grow to $37 billion annually by 2018. In 2009, sponsorship and sports media rights produced just north of $20 billion. In today's general environment of restrained growth, sports revenue continues to outpace the expansion of many mainstream industries. Sales are the backbone of support for both these revenue sources. Because of these projections, there will be an accelerated need to find and train best-in-class sports sellers. But sports sellers don't have it easy. There are enough emotional challenges to weaken the resolve of even the best salespeople. As such, the text is chock-full of motivational suggestions and stimulating success stories. The book provides counseling to help sellers maintain their emotional equanimity through the crucibles that they tackle regularly. There are chapters on what sellers can learn from great leaders and many tips and tricks to get through gatekeepers and other obstacles. There are also interviews with some major marketing and advertising executives who share their views on a variety of subjects including how new sports sponsorship opportunities are best presented to them and what they consider to be both helpful and annoying behavior by sellers. Whether it's the chief marketing officer of Wal-Mart or the sponsorship head of MasterCard, the guidance they share is precious. The last chapter covers inspiring cold call successes including the three greatest in sports history; the sale of the naming rights to Barclays for the arena in Brooklyn, the NASCAR sale to Nextel for the naming rights to its cup series and most recently, the multi-million dollar sale by a relative newcomer to the business to Moda Health, covering the naming rights to the Rose Garden in Portland. As a result of this achievement, the seller, Uzma Rawn, was selected to Forbes' top 30 under 30 in the sports space.

The wildest seven years in the history of hockeyThe Rebel League celebrates the good, the bad, and the ugly of the fabled WHA. It is filled with hilarious anecdotes, behind the scenes dealing, and simply great hockey. It tells the story of Bobby Hull's astonishing million-dollar signing, which helped launch the league, and how he lost his toupee in an on-ice scrap. It explains how a team of naked Birmingham Bulls ended up in an arena concourse spoiling for a brawl. How the Oilers had to smuggle fugitive forward Frankie "Seldom” Beaton out of their dressing room in an equipment bag. And how Mark Howe sometimes forgot not to yell "Dad!” when he called for his teammate father, Gordie, to pass. There's the making of Slap Shot, that classic of modern cinema, and the making of the virtuoso line of Hull, Anders Hedberg, and Ulf Nilsson. It began as the moneymaking scheme of two California lawyers. They didn't know much about hockey, but they sure knew how to shake things up. The upstart WHA introduced to the world 27 new hockey franchises, a trail of bounced cheques, fractious lawsuits, and folded teams. It introduced the crackpots, goons, and crazies that are so well remembered as the league's bizarre legacy. But the hit-and-miss league was much more than a travelling circus of the weird and wonderful. It was the vanguard that drove hockey into the modern age. It ended the NHL's monopoly, freed players from the reserve clause, ushered in the 18-year-old draft, moved the game into the Sun Belt, and put European players on the ice in numbers previously unimagined. The rebel league of the WHA gave shining stars their big-league debut and others their swan song, and provided high-octane fuel for some spectacular flameouts. By the end of its seven years, there were just six teams left standing, four of which - the Winnipeg Jets, Quebec Nordiques, Edmonton Oilers, and Hartford Whalers - would wind up in the expanded NHL.
