This official manual of the British Croquet Association dates from 1920, and includes several illustrations which help explain the rules and methodology behind this classic game.Variations of croquet date back to 17th century England, with the monarch Charles II said to have partook in an early incarnation of the game. The first descriptions resembling the modern game however appeared in Victorian times; it was in this period that croquet ascended to popularity, gaining appreciation as a tranquil yet engaging compliment to outdoor gatherings. By 1920, when this guidebook was published, croquet had swung in and out of fashion multiple times; nevertheless, its place in the recreational roster of Europeans and North Americans alike was clear. This book is intended as a handy reference for experienced players and beginners alike. It contains the essential instructions, measurements and laws of the game. The simplicity and flexibility of croquet is evident; it can be played upon garden or park lawns, at the beach, or upon grassy meadows. Yet while the game can be picked up with ease and its equipment is easy to assemble, this manual is clear that mastering play is a tough accomplishment.

A celebration of the last two decades of sports success in Boston from the co-host of the #1 sports radio show in New EnglandBoston is a unique sports city. Unlike New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago, New Englanders' loyalties are not divided among competing franchises; in the four major American sports, the city has one team each: the Red Sox, the Celtics, the Bruins, and the Patriots. And, as any Boston fan will tell you, that loyalty runs deep. Sports just seem to mean more in New England. Over the last 20 years, those fans have been blessed with an extraordinary run of success, including 12 championships, six runners-up, and many more years of heated contention. In the 21st century, Boston became Titletown. According to Tony Massarotti, longtime Boston sports columnist and host of the #1 sports radio show in New England for the past ten years, this is not a coincidence. Massarotti's This Is Our City paints a portrait of the last 20 years in Boston sports, showing how one team's success has led to the next¿how they have fed off each other, tried to one-up one another, and have supported each other. This is an account of an era where successes and failures stitched together the region, all playing out against major events such as 9/11 and the devastating Boston Marathon¿which led to a memorably profane speech by David Ortiz, who declared, "This is our f@#king city!" Massarotti's This Is Our City is a valentine to Boston sports and will be loved by those fans, wherever they now live.
"In 1994, Whitsitt was named the NBA Executive of the Year--but in 1978 he was just an intern for the Indiana Pacers. Over the next decade and a half, he would find his way to the front lines of an athletic revolution, leading a transformation that took the NBA from an asterisk in sports to a global phenomenon. By 1986, at the tender age of thirty, Whitsitt had been recruited to salvage the Seattle SuperSonics, whose glory had faded after the 1979 NBA championship. In just one season, and after many daring player trades, Whitsitt guided the team back to fighting form and into the playoffs. Whitsitt's grit and risk-taking moves caught the eye of billionaire Paul Allen, who coaxed the savvy executive into taking the helm of the Portland Trail Blazers and leading them back into championship contention. Whitsitt went on to play a pivotal role in convincing Allen to purchase the Seahawks to keep them in town, lobbying for a new stadium--and the implosion of the iconic Kingdome--and ushering in a new era of professional football in Seattle. Whitsitt is the only person to have been both the president and general manager of the Seahawks, Sonics, and Trail Blazers. ... An unprecedented view into the front office of three of the most beloved franchises in the NBA and NFL during their most pivotal years, Game Changer offers a new vision for pro sports, perfect for students of the game, lifelong fans, and sophisticated dealmakers alike."--Amazon.com.
From the early 1900's, town team baseball in eastern Iowa has been a fixture in the area, often referred to as "The Hotbed of Baseball". Following World War II, the Dubuqueland area fielded semi-pro teams in most small rural towns. It was especially popular from the late 40's through 70's and 80's, as measured by fan interest. Although the number of fans attending games has declined since that time, many towns continue to field teams performing at highly competitive levels. It is that tradition which is captured in an entertaining style, emphasizing memories and stories of individuals who viewed the simplicity and innocence of the game as a way of life.
"Posnanski writes of major moments that created legends, and of forgotten moments almost lost to time. It's Willie Mays's catch, Babe Ruth's called shot, and Kirk Gibson's limping home run; the slickest steals; the biggest bombs; and the most triumphant no-hitters. But these are also moments raw with the humanity of the game, the unheralded heroes, the mesmerizing mistakes drenched in pine tar, and every story, from the immortal to the obscure, is told from a unique perspective. Whether of a real fan who witnessed it, or the pitcher who gave up the home run, the umpire, the coach, the opposing player--these are fresh takes on moments so powerful they almost feel like myth"--
"The 1909 opening of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway marked a foundational moment in the history of automotive racing. Events at the famed track and others like it also helped launch America's love affair with cars and an embrace of road systems that transformed cities and shrank perceptions of space. Brian M. Ingrassia tells the story of the legendary oval's early decades. This story revolves around Speedway cofounder and visionary businessman Carl Graham Fisher, whose leadership in the building of the transcontinental Lincoln Highway and the iconic Dixie Highway had an enormous impact on American mobility. Ingrassia looks at the Speedway's history as a testing ground for cars and airplanes, its multiple close brushes with demolition, and the process by which racing became an essential part of the Golden Age of Sports. At the same time, he explores how the track's past reveals the potent links between sports capitalism and the selling of nostalgia, tradition, and racing legends"--

"Behind the Mask profiles 12 legendary NHL goalies, emphasizing the traits that make each one unique. It blends accounts of the goalies' on-ice exploits with anecdotes about their lives off the ice--information gleaned from archival research as well as interviews with teammates, family members and the goalies themselves. The careers here cover the last half-century of professional hockey--from the personal struggles of Roger Crozier and Ed Giacomin on their way to stardom in the 1960s, to the recent brilliance of Carey Price, whose character blends stoicism with a deep warmth and pride in his Indigenous background.
