"Three Points Shy" is the season-long journey of one of the greatest high school basketball teams in the history of Seminole County, Florida. Coached by skilled tactician and savvy motivator Bill Payne, and led by seniors Bruce McCray, Reggie Butler, David Thomas, Keith Whitney, and Glenn Stambaugh, the Fighting Seminoles of Sanford, FL., would punctuate their record-breaking season with a 1979-80 run at Florida's Class 4A State Basketball Championship.Their journey would be filled with a combination of dominating wins, last-second heroics, mid-season heartache, and final stretch redemption. Along the way, there would be holiday tournament championship trophies and three incredible showdowns with the one team that stood in their way of making it to the Lakeland Civic Center's Final Four-Daytona Beach Mainland.Rarely were two high school teams who played in the same conference ranked among the state's top 5 in Florida's High School Prep Polls. And each of the three meetings between Seminole and Daytona Beach Mainland would provide for a roller coaster ride of emotions, soul-crushing shortcomings, and ultimately a decisive measure of Sanford High's heart and mettle as a basketball team.Fighting Seminoles would capture and carry the hopes of their small Central Florida town through a gritty season of winning streaks, setbacks, and comebacks. And along the way, the story of their starters and reserves on the bench would play out on the sports pages of The Sanford Herald, the local paper that chronicled each step of their journey. They would break school records and total the most victories ever in a single season of high school basketball in Seminole County. At times, they would have their hearts broken as well. And there would be heart-warming sacrifices from unsuspected sources as part of their journey."Three Points Shy" is an enjoyable read for anyone even remotely connected to high school sports programs. It provides a game-by-game insight into the success, failure, and character of student-athletes who don the uniforms of their respective teams to represent their schools and communities. And it is a testament to the coaches who lead them and the fans who follow them.

"In the 1990s, the NBA was trying to capitalize on the latter part of the Michael Jordan era and reposition the league for an international market. Expansion franchises were granted to two Canadian cities; but while Toronto thrived thanks in large part to the drafting of Vince Carter, Vancouver badly mismanaged its team, leading eventually to the team's relocation to Memphis. Author ¡ukasz Muniowski finds in the shifting fortunes of the Vancouver/Memphis Grizzlies a significant window on a volatile moment in NBA history. He first examines the failure, both financially and culturally, of a prosperous Canadian city to support an NBA expansion team before turning to the Grizzlies' explosive rise in a relatively impoverished southern city starving for national recognition"--

  • af LeBron James

From the Publisher: From the ultimate team basketball superstar LeBron James and Buzz Bissinger, Pulitzer Prize winning author of Friday Night Lights and Three Nights in August a poignant, thrilling tale of the power of teamwork to transform young lives, including James s own. The Shooting Stars were a bunch of kids LeBron James and his best friends from Akron, Ohio, who first met on a youth basketball team of the same name when they were ten and eleven years old. United by their love of the game and their yearning for companionship, they quickly forged a bond that would carry them through thick and thin (a lot of thin) and, at last, to a national championship in their senior year of high school. They were a motley group who faced challenges all too typical of inner-city America. LeBron grew up without a father and had moved with his mother more than a dozen times by the age of ten. Willie McGee, the quiet one, had left both his parents behind in Chicago to be raised by his older brother in Akron. Dru Joyce was outspoken, and his dad was ever present; he would end up coaching all five of the boys in high school. Sian Cotton, who also played football, was the happy-go-lucky enforcer, while Romeo Travis was unhappy, bitter, even surly, until he finally opened himself up to the bond his teammates offered him. In the summer after seventh grade, the Shooting Stars tasted glory when they qualified for a national championship tournament in Memphis. But they lost their focus and had to go home early. They promised one another they would stay together and do whatever it took to win a national title. They had no idea how hard it would be to fulfill that promise. In the years that followed, they would endure jealousy, hostility, exploitation, resentment from the black community (because they went to a white high school), and the consequences of their own overconfidence. Not least, they would all have to wrestle with LeBrons outsize success, which brought too much attention and even a whiff of scandal their way. But together these five boys became men, and together they claimed the prize they had fought for all those years a national championship. Shooting Stars is a stirring depiction of the challenges that face America s youth today and a gorgeous evocation of the transcendent impact of teamwork.

"A riveting memoir from Kenny Smith ("Kenny the Jet")-superstar basketball commentator, host of top-rated Inside the NBA, and two-time NBA champion. Smith reveals his thoughtful views on race, the NBA, his upbringing, and an abundance of poignant, colorful inside stories about the star players, coaches, and mentors who taught and inspired him along the way. In his playing career, Kenny Smith was a star at the University of North Carolina before beginning a storied NBA run, playing for six teams and winning two championships with the Houston Rockets. But his tremendous popularity skyrocketed when in 1998 he joined the new TNT show, Inside the NBA-which, for the last twenty-four years, has gone on to be the nation's top-rated basketball commentary show, winning multiple Grammy awards and gaining enormous acclaim for the humor, insight, social commentary, and unrivaled basketball coverage from Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O'Neal, and host Ernie Johnson, Jr. In particular, Kenny is known for his laser-sharp analysis and eloquent explanations of the game, the scene, and world around it. In this candid and deep memoir, Kenny crafts a dozen chapters about each of the extraordinary people who taught him invaluable life lessons. His chapter on Michael Jordan-who was a senior when Kenny arrived as a freshman at UNC-is eye-opening and revelatory in a different way than even the massively popular The Last Stand (ESPN/Netflix). His chapters on Shaquille O'Neal and Charles Barkley reveal the real men, quirks, and affections behind the massive personalities. Chapters on legendary coach Dean Smith and superstar Hakeem Olajuwan are fascinating in unexpected ways. Interweaving poignant material about his upbringing in Queens, NY, his parents, his children, and his marriage, Kenny goes right to the heart of the invaluable knowledge he obtained from the important figures around him. He is also a strong, moving voice on race, being Black in a difficult world, and overcoming obstacles. Why the 1-4 High? Why run all of your set plays, quick hitters or entry plays from a 1-4 high set? Good question. Here are the reasons this alignment is great for all set plays:Less is more. This one set keeps things simple for your players. It creates excellent spacing. Offense is all about good spacing. This alignment creates good scoring opportunities for every position. It is easy to create plays for any type of shot necessary from this alignment. The plays can be run to either side of the court simply by running the mirror image of the play.It is very easy to get into from a numbered fast break system. It denies the defense from establishing its defensive priorities, making this alignment difficult to defend from the onset. What are defensive priorities? Regardless of the type of defense run, most traditional defensive systems want to establish the following priorities:Be able to apply tremendous pressure on the ball and provide help to the on-the-ball defender.Be able to provide help in any situation.Protect the rim and low post areas.Force the ball out of the middle to one side to establish a ball side and help side, allowing the defense to outnumber the offense 5-3 by virtue of the two help defenders.Defend two offensive players with one defender if possible (usually a zone defense).Establish good inside positioning for defensive rebound coverage.Clog the lane area with help defenders to prevent lane penetration via pass, cut or dribble; low post entry passes;backdoor cuts for lay-ups.Some of the ways the 1-4 high alignment prevents the defense from establishing its priorities include preventing the defense from being able to establish a help side defense, forcing the defense away from the lane area and rim, opening the area up for penetration of one form or another, and requiring the defense to guard each offensive player, including the ball, with only one defender, and operating the offense from the middle of the court to initiate the attack. In addition to the advantages the 1-4 high set denies the defense, it is versatile due to the fact all of the plays can be run as mirror images. Any play depicted being run to the right hand side of the court can be run in its mirror image on the left hand side of the court. This short book contains 30 plays to attack man-to-man defenses, zone defenses, to obtain 3-point shots, low post shots, and on-the-ball screens to create penetration opportunities. These simple plays are an excellent way to score after a time out, a dead ball or as an entry to motion or other offenses.
