The region of the world-famous meteoric monasteries is hiked on ten routes. Each tour takes about 3 to 4 hours and is attractive at any time of the year. Climbing skills are not required, just good shoes and a little sense of direction. The hikes lead to all six active monasteries, which can be visited, as well as to all other sights such as rock monasteries, monk's prison, dragon's cave or spindle, an extraordinary rock. One tour leads to the neighboring villages beyond the Pinio with a bridge from the Ottoman period and a ruined castro, another to the neighboring valley with a bizarre rock formation and magnificent views. The villages of Kalabaka and Kastraki will also be explored extensively. Geological and historical data as well as overview maps for all tours complete the hiking guide.Supplemental Information:This book may be converted to another format for orders outside the Federal Republic of Germany. Walking Hadrian's Wall, Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway takes you on my walking trek along Hadrian's Wall and across England in the late summer of 2022. I walked along the famous Hadrian's Wall built in AD 122 by Emperor Hadrian. Over a period of 10 days, I crossed the country. Starting on the east coast at Wallsend I walked to Bowness-on-Solway on the west coast. The journey has been recreated with watercolor illustrations and daily descriptions of the adventure. Over the 84-mile journey, I met many wonderful people and experienced Roman and English history. Follow along with me as I "hike my own hike" and visit Heddon-on-the-Hill, Chollerford, the Twice Brewed Inn, and many more places. Including visiting the Roman Fort at Vindolanda. The book is filled with original watercolor illustrations by J. Bruce Jones. Also included in the book is a Frequently Asked Questions section on the trip, the kind of pack I used, lessons I learned, and much more. - Walking Hadrian's Wall- Day 1, Arrive in Newcastle and overnight, Hotel Indigo, walked to Wallsend, Metro for the return- Day 2, Wallsend to Heddon-on-the-Hill, Ironsign Country House- Day 3, Heddon-on-the-Hill to Corbridge, The Angle of Corbridge- Day 4, Corbridge to Chollerford, Simonburn Tearooms- Day 5, Chollerford to Once Brewed, Twice Brewed Inn- Day 6, Once Brewed to Gilsland, The Hollies on the Wall- Day 7, Gilsland to Brampton, Scotch Arms Mews- Day 8, Brampton to Carlisle, Howard Lodge- Day 9, Carlisle to Bowness-on-Solway, Wallsend BnB>Includes a Section of Frequently Asked Questions About the Trip- Which way did your hike, east to west?- What was your itinerary, bed, and breakfasts you stayed in?- What kind of pack did you bring, your main pack, and day pack?- What kind of gear did you bring?- Clothing and footwear?- What did you carry in your day pack?- What lessons did I learn?- What were some of your favorite places?
This volume, and subsequent volumes, include accounts of the author's explorations of little-traveled byways and remote hilltops in the mountains of Pennsylvania. His descriptions and photos of the unique and unusual places he discovered will appeal to all those who seek adventure and who like to explore odd and mysterious places; places like the Devil's Dining Room, the Indian Steps, the Thousand Steps, Ticklish Rock, Umbrella Rock, and many others that are highlighted in the Pennsylvania Mountain Landmarks series. Much to his delight he also found that there are human interest stories and historical accounts that cling to these same spots and which seem as old as the rocks themselves; tales, that are steeped in the spiritual charm of the Native American and imbued with the pioneering spirit of the Pennsylvania wilderness as it existed when the earliest settlers penetrated its dark interior. Such accounts are the stuff of which legends are made and which add color and mystique to the mountains, forming their very soul. It is this breath of life, hints of a less-complicated and more compelling past that led the author to find the spots where it still survives, and to bask in the local color and lore that surround those places. In this volume:The King's Stool (Dauphin County)Stairways to the Stars (Berks et al.)Umbrella Rock (Elk County)The Three Sisters (Huntingdon County)Lewis' Rock (Cumberland County)Infernal Evidence (Clearfield et al.)Memento Mori (Jefferson et al.)Picture Rocks (Lycoming County)Boxcar Rocks (Lebanon County)Warriors' Mark (Huntingdon County)Vampire Rock (Clinton County)More of the Same (multiple counties)
