The untold and inspiring story of Eric Liddell, hero of Chariots of Fire, from his Olympic medal to his missionary work in China to his last, brave years in a Japanese work camp during WWIIMany people will remember Eric Liddell as the Olympic gold medalist from the Academy Award winning film Chariots of Fire. Famously, Liddell would not run on Sunday because of his strict observance of the Christian sabbath, and so he did not compete in his signature event, the 100 meters, at the 1924 Paris Olympics. He was the greatest sprinter in the world at the time, and his choice not to run was ridiculed by the British Olympic committee, his fellow athletes, and most of the world press. Yet Liddell triumphed in a new event, winning the 400 meters in Paris.Liddell ran--and lived--for the glory of his God. After winning gold, he dedicated himself to missionary work. He travelled to China to work in a local school and as a missionary. He married and had children there. By the time he could see war on the horizon, Liddell put Florence, his pregnant wife, and children on a boat to Canada, while he stayed behind, his conscience compelling him to stay among the Chinese. He and thousands of other westerners were eventually interned at a Japanese work camp.Once imprisoned, Liddell did what he was born to do, practice his faith and his sport. He became the moral center of an unbearable world. He was the hardest worker in the camp, he counseled many of the other prisoners, he gave up his own meager portion of meals many days, and he organized games for the children there. He even raced again. For his ailing, malnourished body, it was all too much. Liddell died of a brain tumor just before the end of the war. His passing was mourned around the world, and his story still inspires. In the spirit of The Boys in the Boat and Unbroken, For the Glory is both a compelling narrative of athletic heroism and a gripping story of faith in the darkest circumstances.

The Story of The North Central College Cross Country and Track & Field TeamsRun for Fun and Personal Bests is not about trophies and championships. It's ultimately about much more important goals and lasting rewards for the student athletes who built and benefit from our North Central program. The basic responsibility of a coach should never veer from the goal of stressing core internal values that guide athletes to personal growth.I train cross country and track athletes, but this recipe, this process, should work for any athlete in any sport. I also believe it can guide other young people pursuing a personal goal in school, at work, or in their personal lives, who are asking themselves, "I know where I want to go, but how do I get there?"At times, we are all so busy working toward material outcomes for our youths that we don't have time for the most important needs they require to succeed. In a world that's becoming more materialistic, more professional, more outcome-oriented, we believe, to the contrary, that the ultimate competition is you against you.
"This is not your typical book about running! Great stories & practical tips on how to pace yourself in life not pacing your run. I laughed, I cried. This author has a great perspective on life." -Amazon Review This book is for runners, people thinking about running, type-A personality athletes, people working long hours confined by horrible little cubicles and people interested in applying endurance sports principles to work and life."I'm not scared to admit I am type-A personality. I own it along with the rest of my junk, but it has taken many years and an unfortunate episode with my heart to try to be kinder to myself. The real progress in my journey started when I took all the research I was focused on in my work - pace, recovery, visualization, fit and form - and applied it to my work, sport and life. Quite absurdly my overall goal has been to run faster, next in line has been a more balanced life. I know that should be reversed, but we all know what motivates us right?! Every day I am working on just enjoying the moment and flushing unrealistic expectations down the shitter.""This book is about my personal evolution, in both running and not running. I include some research that helped me run easier and faster, talk from other runners, and some thoughts from my 'inner asshole'. My siblings said I talk too much about my personal life. I'm okay with that. Just wait until they read what I wrote about them! ;)"Amazon Review: "I loved this book, even though I am not a runner (yet). I think that may change after this read though! The writing style is candid, self-deprecating and relatable to anyone who has had struggles with time management, health, and juggling everything on his or her plate. Look for the deeper message in this book and you will find it. The thought-provoking stories and energetic drive toward wellness and balance made a lasting impression on me, whereas most books do not. Whether you are a runner or not, whether you are an ergonomist or not, I highly recommend this book."

Over 20 million Americans run recreationally, but doing it right is more than a matter of buying an expensive pair of shoes and heading for the track. Building on the popularity of "The Beginning Runner's Handbook," this practical, easy-to-use guide provides a step-by-step program for running a half or full marathon for the first time. It shows readers how to get motivated and set realistic goals, choose the proper shoes, eat right, build strength and endurance, and avoid sore muscles and injury. The book includes tips from elite runners on such subjects as staying motivated when the weather is extreme, running technique, running with a dog, and running partners. Finally, the book describes strategies for the race, what to expect on race day, and the psychological effects of finishing a half or full marathon. Most importantly, it includes a full training program designed to ensure that that crucial first race is a winner.
