Today, deep underground basements are an important component of new urban building construction. This is often because parking in most large cities is generally inadequate and often serviced by aging, outdated, and deteriorated above-grade parking structures that do not fit the surrounding architecture and occupy valuable aboveground space. The integration of underground parking into major, new building projects in urban environments can enhance the aesthetic and economic values of the overall development. The current state-of-practice for seismic design of buildings with multiple underground storeys involves approximate approaches that primarily differ according to the designer¿s judgement and experience. While current research mainly aims at understanding the effect of soil structure interactions, this study has ultimate goal of finding appropriate recommendations concerning the inclusion of underground storeys in the modelling and analysis of reinforced concrete buildings and optimizing their design.
The aquatic systems are extremely important to mankind as they have various uses, including drinking water supply, irrigation, navigation, recreation, etc. These are also source of organic productivity. Water is one of the essential items needed by man, plant, animal and other living beings for their survival. Water is most precious resources on the earth covering almost 70% of the earth's surface. There are several books and research dealing with water and water related concepts, and maximum number of books and research are focused on marine water or river water. We all know that in hilly region, one of the most important sources of fresh water is ¿lakes¿. And these lakes are the main source of water in most of the river in Himalaya Region. As per their geography, location, climatic condition and approach of reach, these lakes are highly tough. Due to this fact, they are so far from any kind of pollution, and serves the mankind by fulfilling their basic need of life ¿ drinking water.
Voltage sags and harmonics disturb the power quality and this can be overcome by custom power device called Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR). The DVR is normally connected between the source or feeder and critical or sensitive load. The performance of DVR depends on the efficiency of the control technique involved in reference signal generation considering phase angle jumps. The control technique shall compensate the voltage disturbances and shall reject the load current disturbance. If voltage regulation is high, disturbance rejection ability decrease and vice versa Hence a robust and optimal control technique is very much required to compromise between voltage regulation and disturbance rejection. The work is focuses on implementation of various control techniques with suitable voltage source converter topology for proper voltage regulation and disturbance rejection.
This book helps the researchers and industrialists working on power quality improvement in renewable source integrated grid topologies. Different optimal renewable integrated topologies and effective utilization of renewable sources have been highlighted in this book. Modernization in every field of industrialization and increasing living standards of the world population demands more power from the utility. Non-linear loads and renewable source integration hinders the quality of power supply. Begining chapters completely dedicated to renewable sources and power quality challeges. Later chapters highlights three main topologies. Such as shunt control topology, Series control topology and Unified Control topology. Different control strategies performance in all the three topologies discussed for mitigating voltage and current abnormalities. By going through this book one can easily understand power quality issues, challenges, mitigating methodologies. The data presented completely supports renewable integration along with power quality improvement.
Nutmeg is an important tree spice which produces two different spices namely Nutmeg and mace. The Nutmeg fruits are harvested on time at the proper stage of maturity in order to maintain their nutrient level as well as attaining desirable quality. Presently, the method adapted for harvesting Nutmeg in Konkan region by anual i.e. by hand picking, by shaking the tree branches or by using bamboo stick having a curves hook. It was therefore necessary to develop harvesting system with simple design, easy for operation, low cost but higher working efficiency.

Building on his national bestseller The Rational Optimist, Matt Ridley chronicles the history of innovation, and how we need to change our thinking on the subject.Innovation is the main event of the modern age, the reason we experience both dramatic improvements in our living standards and unsettling changes in our society. Forget short-term symptoms like Donald Trump and Brexit, it is innovation that will shape the twenty-first century. Yet innovation remains a mysterious process, poorly understood by policy makers and businessmen alike.Matt Ridley argues that we need to see innovation as an incremental, bottom-up, fortuitous process that happens as a direct result of the human habit of exchange, rather than an orderly, top-down process developing according to a plan. Innovation is crucially different from invention, because it is the turning of inventions into things of practical and affordable use to people. It speeds up in some sectors and slows down in others. It is always a collective, collaborative phenomenon, involving trial and error, not a matter of lonely genius. It happens mainly in just a few parts of the world at any one time. It still cannot be modeled properly by economists, but it can easily be discouraged by politicians. Far from there being too much innovation, we may be on the brink of an innovation famine.Ridley derives these and other lessons from the lively stories of scores of innovations, how they started and why they succeeded or failed. Some of the innovation stories he tells are about steam engines, jet engines, search engines, airships, coffee, potatoes, vaping, vaccines, cuisine, antibiotics, mosquito nets, turbines, propellers, fertilizer, zero, computers, dogs, farming, fire, genetic engineering, gene editing, container shipping, railways, cars, safety rules, wheeled suitcases, mobile phones, corrugated iron, powered flight, chlorinated water, toilets, vacuum cleaners, shale gas, the telegraph, radio, social media, block chain, the sharing economy, artificial intelligence, fake bomb detectors, phantom games consoles, fraudulent blood tests, hyperloop tubes, herbicides, copyright, and even life itself.

"Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you." When Frank Lloyd Wright said this, he probably wasn't envisioning self-cleaning surfaces, the photonic crystal, or Velcro. But nature has indeed yielded such inventions for those scientists and engineers who heeded the architect's words. The cutting-edge science of bio-inspiration gives way to architectural and product designs that mimic intricate mechanisms found in nature. In Peter Forbes's engaging book we discover that the spiny fruits of the cocklebur inspired the hook-and-loop fastener known as Velcro; unfolding leaves, insect wings, and space solar panels share similar origami folding patterns; the self-cleaning leaves of the sacred lotus plant have spawned a new industry of self-cleaning surfaces; and cantilever bridges have much in common with bison spines. As we continue to study nature, bio-inspiration will transform our lives and force us to look at the world in a new way.
Nature's Teachings: Human Invention Anticipated By Nature is a book written by John George Wood and originally published in 1877. The book explores the idea that many human inventions and innovations actually have their roots in nature, and that humans have often looked to nature for inspiration and guidance in their creative endeavors.Throughout the book, Wood provides numerous examples of how nature has inspired human invention, from the design of buildings and bridges to the development of tools and machinery. He also discusses how nature has influenced art, literature, and other cultural expressions. The book is divided into several chapters, each of which focuses on a different aspect of the relationship between nature and human invention. Some of the topics covered include the use of natural materials in construction, the study of animal behavior as a model for human psychology, and the role of plants and animals in medicine.Overall, Nature's Teachings: Human Invention Anticipated By Nature is a fascinating exploration of the ways in which humans have been inspired by the natural world throughout history. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the intersection of science, art, and culture. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Flash of Genius And Other True Stories of Invention by John Seabrook, staff writer for The New Yorker, is a collection of true stories about where great ideas come from, and is the basis for the Major Motion Picture starring Greg Kinnear releasing October 2008."John Seabrook is one of America's finest non-fiction writers....Fascinating, entertaining, beautifully written and often poignant..."-Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food NationWhere Do Great Ideas Come From?In Flash of Genius, John Seabrook explores the moment when inspiration strikes in an otherwise average life, and what happens when that idea moves out into the larger culture and takes on a life-and commercial possibilities-of its own. The title piece in this collection is the David v. Goliath story of Bob Kearns, a professor and inventor who came up with something we all use every chance we get: the intermittent windshield wiper. When Kearns' patents were infringed, he fought General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, and eventually prevailed in a classic American story of never giving up, never backing down. Seabrook has been fascinated by stories of invention and entrepreneurship since childhood, when he grew up with an uncle who invented something as ubiquitous as Bob Kearns' wipers: boil-in-bag vegetables. In Flash of Genius, Seabrook also writes about his family's invention and about thirteen other iconoclastic visions that turned into the stuff of every day.

The book ""Gutenberg: Was He The Inventor Of Printing? An Historical Investigation Embodying A Criticism On Dr. Van Der Lindes Gutenberg"" by Jan Hendrik Hessels is a historical investigation into the life and work of Johannes Gutenberg, the man often credited with inventing printing with movable type. The book critically examines the research of Dr. Van Der Linde, who argued that Gutenberg was not the sole inventor of printing, but rather a member of a team of craftsmen who worked together to develop the technology. Hessels delves into the historical record to provide evidence for his argument that Gutenberg was indeed the inventor of printing, and explores the various factors that contributed to his success. The book is a comprehensive and detailed study of Gutenberg and his impact on the history of printing, and will be of interest to scholars and enthusiasts of printing history, as well as those interested in the history of technology and innovation. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. From the New York Times-bestselling author of Where Good Ideas Come From and Unexpected Life, a new look at the power and legacy of great ideas. In this illustrated history, Steven Johnson explores the history of innovation over centuries, tracing facets of modern life (refrigeration, clocks, and eyeglass lenses, to name a few) from their creation by hobbyists, amateurs, and entrepreneurs to their unintended historical consequences. Filled with surprising stories of accidental genius and brilliant mistakes-from the French publisher who invented the phonograph before Edison but forgot to include playback, to the Hollywood movie star who helped invent the technology behind Wi-Fi and Bluetooth-How We Got to Now investigates the secret history behind the everyday objects of contemporary life. In his trademark style, Johnson examines unexpected connections between seemingly unrelated fields: how the invention of air-conditioning enabled the largest migration of human beings in the history of the species-to cities such as Dubai or Phoenix, which would otherwise be virtually uninhabitable; how pendulum clocks helped trigger the industrial revolution; and how clean water made it possible to manufacture computer chips. Accompanied by a major six-part television series on PBS, How We Got to Now is the story of collaborative networks building the modern world, written in the provocative, informative, and engaging style that has earned Johnson fans around the globe.
