This problem book is a companion volume to the 2nd edition of the book "Building Physics: From Physical Principles to International Standards". The primary book offers a comprehensive presentation of the most important phenomena in building physics: heat transfer, moisture/humidity, sound/acoustics and illumination. The problem book includes both problems and solutions. Most of the problems are as practical as possible, while remaining conceptual and avoiding overreach. Many of the solutions presented do not simply end upon determination of the correct answer, but include further explanations for a deeper understanding of the theory and/or connections to other everyday phenomena. These explanations can be of great value to lecturers who use the primary book for their courses. All solutions are cross-referenced to the formulas or explanations in the primary book. This establishes the connection between theory and practice and contributes to a more thorough understanding of the subject. The book is primarily intended for lecturers and students of all subjects related to building physics.

This book presents a theoretical analysis of several problems in thermal and solutal convections in magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) flows. It provides a systemic discussion on the development of fluid dynamics, continuum hypothesis, Newton¿s law of viscosity, heat transfer, mass transfer, thermal diffusion, diffusion-thermo-MHD, gray and non-gray gases, Fourier¿s law of conduction, and Fick¿s law of diffusion in such a way that readers with little knowledge in physics will find it easier to understand the contents. Some physical principles, such as those governing fluid motion, fluid temperature, and fluid concentration, are presented in vector form, allowing the corresponding form to be derived in any orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system. Laplace transform technique in closed form is used to obtain exact solutions to unsteady one-dimensional flow problems, an implicit finite difference method of Crank¿Nicholson type is used to solve unsteady two-dimensional flow problems, and an asymptotic series expansion method is used to solve the governing equations of the steady three-dimensional flow problem analytically. Flow and transport phenomena are thoroughly treated in each chapter separately. This book emphasizes the influence of an induced magnetic field. The outcomes of the works are graphically depicted so that readers can gain a tangible understanding of the problems. It also includes a list of inverse Laplace transforms (ILTs) for several specific functions, some of which are not found in the existing literature. The ILTs of special functions are given in brief form and can further be utilized as standard formulae in finding those as special cases. Some new special functions are introduced in the book, along with appropriate definitions. As a result, the formulations for velocity, temperature, concentration, skin friction, Nusselt number, and Sherwood number have been appeared in brief and convenient forms that are uncommon in other literature. This book addresses numerous areas of contemporary magneto-fluid dynamics research that have major implications in engineering. It is primarily intended for researchers working in the field of heat and mass transfer in hydromagnetic flows.
"Packed with examples and illustrations to describe complex concepts and mathematical derivations, and including end-of-chapter problems with helpful hints, this thorough and accessible textbook is the ideal introduction to continuum thermodynamics for senior undergraduate and graduate students of mechanical, aeronautical and civil engineering"--
This book highlights the latest advances in advanced insulating materials. Energy crisis and environmental pollution are two major themes currently faced by the human society. It is of unprecedented strategic importance to construct a strong smart grid with super/ultra-high voltage network as the backbone and clean energy transmission as the leading force. However, the performance of electrical equipment and devices is greatly determined by the properties of their insulating materials, especially when they have to work in extreme circumstances including high-temperature differences, intense radiation, and strong electric fields. The key advantage of polymers is that their properties could be adjusted by changing their chemical composition and molecular structure. Research on polymer insulating materials has been highly successful as progress has been made in characterizing these properties, designing molecular structures, and studying polymers¿ specialized properties. On the other hand, nanodielectrics are prepared by adding certain nanoscale fillers into a polymer matrix to yield better electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties. When the particle pretreatment methods and the content or category of fillers are adjusted, nanodielectrics tend to have greater breakdown strength as well as better high-temperature resistance and space charge suppression. Therefore, this book covers investigations of properties of insulating materials that explore their interface effects and composite structures and introduces findings in methods that improve the performance of electrical devices. The book is not only used as a timely reference for engineering and technical personnel in related fields but also as a comprehensive textbook for college students.

The book combines two interrelated lines of research. One of them is devoted to the development of the theory for solving a certain class of three-dimensional electromagnetic field problems of the three-dimensional electromagnetic field, taking into account eddy currents in a moving conducting magnetizing body. Preference is given to the development of the analytical solution methods of the three-dimensional quasi-stationary problem of field conjugation in the system: ¿a contour of an arbitrary spatial configuration with an alternating current is conducting body with a flat boundary surface¿. The second direction refers to the development of mathematical models for solving applied problems, which involve the use of developed methods for calculating the electromagnetic field and their characteristics. The main application of calculation methods is aimed at solving problems of heat treatment non-ferrous and ferrous metal products using the induction method of heating in a transverse magnetic field. The inverse problems are solved to determine the inductor configuration as flat and spatial current contours for providing the necessary temperature distribution of moving metal strips. To achieve uniform heating of strips across the width using inductors in the form of flat current contours parallel to the strip surface, it is advisable to use combinations of current contours, where the geometric dimensions are determined by the size and electro-physical parameters of the metal strips. A more uniform temperature distribution during high-frequency induction heating is achieved by using inductors in the form of current contours of the required spatial configuration. The book is intended for researchers, postgraduate students, and students specialized in theory and calculations of electromagnetic fields and induction heating installations.
