I december 2020 rejste københavnervirksomheden Seaborg Technologies over 100 millioner kr. fra private investorer. Her deltog bl.a.
In this edited volume, Klaus-Jürgen Röhlig brings together leading researchers from geoengineering, nuclear physics, materials science and the social sciences to provide an overview of the terminology and concepts required to engage with nuclear waste management. Addressing measures and strategies for managing waste from technical and societal points of view, the book is ideal for early-career professionals and students in the field.
Nuclear engineers advancing the energy transition are understanding more about the next generation of nuclear plants; however, it is still difficult to access all the critical types, concepts, and applications in one location. Advanced Reactor Concepts (ARC): A New Nuclear Power Plant Perspective Producing Energy gives engineers and nuclear engineering researchers the comprehensive tools to get up to date on the latest technology supporting generation IV nuclear plant systems. After providing a brief history of this area, alternative technology is discussed such as electromagnetic pumps, heat pipes as control devices, Nuclear Air-Brayton Combined Cycles integration, and instrumentation helping nuclear plants to provide dispatchable electricity to the grid and heat to industry. Packed with examples of all the types, benefits, and challenges involved, Advanced Reactor Concepts (ARC) delivers the go-to reference that engineers need to advance safe nuclear energy as a low-carbon option.
Building on a scientifically-grounded account of the physics, Prof. Dunlap's book explores a range of issues relevant to nuclear fusion and its role in solving the energy problem. Energy from Nuclear Fusion bridges the gap between descriptive texts and those intended for specialists, providing an accessible reference for anyone interested in nuclear fusion as a carbon-free energy solution.
Materials Science and Fuel Technologies of Uranium and Plutonium Mixed Oxide offers a deep understanding of MOX properties for nuclear fuels that will be useful for performance evaluation. It also reviews fuel property simulation technology and an irradiation behavior model required for performance evaluation.
This carefully researched book presents facts and arguments showing, beyond a doubt, that nuclear fusion power will not be technically feasible in time to satisfy the world's urgent need for climate-neutral energy. The author describes the 70-year history of nuclear fusion; the vain attempts to construct an energy-generating nuclear fusion power reactor, and shows that even in the most optimistic scenario nuclear fusion, in spite of the claims of its proponents, will not be able to make a sizable contribution to the energy mix in this century, whatever the outcome of ITER. This implies that fusion power will not be a factor in combating climate change, and that the race to save the climate with carbon-free energy will have been won or lost long before the first nuclear fusion power station comes on line.Aimed at the general public as well as those whose decisions directly affect energy policy, this book will be a valuable resource for informing future debates.
Everything you thought you knew about nuclear power is wrong. This is just as well, because nuclear energy is essential to avoid catastrophic global warming. While renewables will surely play an important part in our future energy strategy, expecting them to deliver all the world's power is dangerously delusional. In 2014, statistics showed that wind and solar power contributed only 1 per cent of global primary energy. Similarly, while energy saving has a key role to play in the developed world, there is no possibility of humanity as a whole using less energy while the developing world is extracting itself from poverty. And the fact is that the anti-nuclear movement of the 1970s and '80s has made the world more dependent on fossil fuels. In Nuclear 2.0, environmental campaigner Mark Lynas debunks the myths that have cast nuclear energy in a bad light. Often overlooked because of concerns surrounding nuclear waste and radiation poisoning after the Chernobyl disaster, atomic energy is one of the most impressive sources of low-carbon power. In this enlightening read, Mark looks at the science and re-evaluates the situation to unravel why our future is threatened not just by the big fossil-fuel companies, but also the professional anti-nuclear Green groups. This book is a call for all those who want to see a low-carbon future to join forces and advocate a huge, Apollo-Program-scale investment in wind, solar and nuclear power.
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques for the inspection of industrial structural components have to be qualified in respect to the minimum performance to be achieved. The qualification schemes relate to all aspects of the tests: procedure, equipment and personnel and the qualification of inspection should be codified in Standards. Such Standards are of two main types: those that detail the methods and procedures to be used and those that define the results which must be achieved. The European Network for Inspection Qualification (ENIQ) has as its aim the creation of a European collaboration for critical studies, assessment and qualification of inspection procedures for industrial structural components. The final goal is to support international Codes and Standards bodies via technical tools, expertise and demonstrative exercises that can be sponsored and managed at the European level.
This book is devoted to the calculation of hot-plasma properties which generally requires a huge number of atomic data. It is the first book that combines information on the details of the basic atomic physics and its application to atomic spectroscopy with the use of the relevant statistical approaches. Information like energy levels, radiative rates, collisional and radiative cross-sections, etc., must be included in equilibrium or non-equilibrium models in order to describe both the atomic-population kinetics and the radiative properties. From the very large number of levels and transitions involved in complex ions, some statistical (global) properties emerge. The book presents a coherent set of concepts and compact formulas suitable for tractable and accurate calculations. The topics addressed are: radiative emission and absorption, and a dozen of other collisional and radiative processes; transition arrays between level ensembles (configurations, superconfigurations); effective temperatures of configurations, superconfigurations, and ions; charge-state distributions; radiative power losses and opacity. There are many numerical examples and comparisons with experiment presented throughout the book. The plasma properties described in this book are especially relevant to large nuclear fusion facilities such as the NIF (California) and the ITER (France), and to astrophysics. Methods relevant to the central-field configurational model are described in detail in the appendices: tensor-operator techniques, second-quantization formalism, statistical distribution moments, and the algebra of partition functions. Some extra tools are propensity laws, correlations, and fractals. These methods are applied to the analytical derivation of many properties, specially the global ones, through which the complexity is much reduced. The book is intended for graduate-level students, and for physicists working in the field.
Addresses a number of technical skills in mathematics, physics, and specific areas of nuclear engineering that will prepare the student for optimum performance in various nuclear engineering or medical physics curriculum. This book includes fundamentals in probability and statistics, ODEs, series solutions, and general differential equations.
