Archaeological and anthropological investigations of depictions seldom extend beyond a single culture or a single geographical location, although there is a powerful factor common to all depictions, the factor of human perception. In this volume an attempt is made to show how this factor affects both creation and recognition of depictions, how, in common with everyday vision of the environment, typical contours are derived and used, not merely to depict individually readily recognisable models, but also how by concatenation they lead to such a splendid figure as Australian Kakadu crocodiles, or by distortion to creation of illusions of pictorial depth, such as is evoked by Leonardo da Vinci¿s perspective and by inverted (Byzantine) perspective thought by some to be an aberration. Bartel¿s studies show that pictorial depth is often achieved to the artist¿s, and many a viewer¿s, but not to geometer¿s satisfaction by partial distortion, and Chinese masterpieces embody, side by side, ¿normal¿ and inverted perspective. The visual process is universally uniform (if it were not, one would not be able to recognise an Altamira bison as a bison) and its foibles can be freely exploited. Its best known exploiter is probably Cezanne. His pictures are admired by many and puzzle many. Strzemi¿ski postulated that they compound distinct lines of sight, thus endorsing primacy of central vision, a concept thought by Gombrich to be of greater import to geometers than to artists.
This book describes multi-site diversity modelling of induced rain attenuation statistics for satellite communication systems using copula functions. It gathers all relevant state-of-the-art knowledge, provides the missing pieces and rounds them up in a way that the reader is given a complete picture of important modelling factors and ways to address them. The books¿ main features include: Data post-processing methodology for statistical analysis based on our Earth-satellite propagation experiments. Two novel multi-site diversity prediction models based on Gaussian copula considering distance between stations or considering distance, baseline, and elevation angle. Two novel multi-site diversity prediction models based on hyperbolic cosecant copula considering distance between stations or considering distance, baseline, and elevation angle. Exhaustive comparative tests and error performance of the prediction models showing that improved error performance is achieved compared to the ITU R model and to the state-of-the-art models. The results presented in the book are expected to contribute to the improvement of the system design and to the further research of modelling the next generation satellite links at higher frequencies.

This book covers image and video color editing research advances over the last two decades. Bringing readers up to speed on digital image and video editing techniques and research, the book delves into an area that has attracted much attention from researchers due to the rapid development of computer graphics and the widespread prevalence of digital cameras and mobile phones in daily life. Readers will get a comprehensive overview of the theory and application of color transfer, emotional color transfer, colorization, decolorization, and style transfer in altering still and moving digital images. Despite the existence of professional image editing software that can complete complex image editing work, the skills required to achieve satisfactory editing results can be prohibitive, and even professional image editors need to spend a lot of time developing and maintaining aptitude in a niche tool. Instead, the book explores image and video editing techniques that are simple and effective alternatives to such editing software that professional and amateur image editors can utilize. The book focuses on color as one of the most important features of an image or video. Image and video color editing aims to dramatically alter source images suitable for a wide range of applications.

In modern data analysis, massive measurements from a network require novel signal processing techniques, which are expected to be adapted to the network topology, have distributed implementation, and are flexible enough for various applications. Graph signal processing (GSP) theories and techniques are geared towards these goals. GSP has seen rapid developments in recent years. Since its introduction around ten years ago, we have seen numerous new ideas and practical applications related to the field. In this monograph, an overview of recent advances in generalizing GSP is presented, with a focus on the extension to high-dimensional spaces, models, and structures. Alongside new frameworks proposed to tackle such problems, many new mathematical tools are introduced. In the first part of the monograph, traditional GSP is reviewed, challenges that it faces are highlighted, and efforts in overcoming such challenges are motivated. These efforts then become the theme for the rest of the publication. Included are the generalization of GSP to high dimensional vertex signal spaces, the theory of random shift operators and the wide-sense stationary (WSS) statistical signal models, and the treatment of high dimensionality in graph structures and generalized graph-like structures. The monograph concludes with an outline of possible future directions.

Deep learning has achieved remarkable success in many machine learning tasks such as image classification, speech recognition, and game playing. However, these breakthroughs are often difficult to translate into real-world engineering systems because deep learning models require a massive number of training samples, which are costly to obtain in practice. To address labeled data scarcity, few-shot meta-learning optimizes learning algorithms that can efficiently adapt to new tasks quickly. While meta-learning is gaining significant interest in the machine learning literature, its working principles and theoretic fundamentals are not as well understood in the engineering community. This review monograph provides an introduction to meta-learning by covering principles, algorithms, theory, and engineering applications. After introducing meta-learning in comparison with conventional and joint learning, the main meta-learning algorithms are described, as well as a general bilevel optimization framework for the definition of meta-learning techniques. Then, known results on the generalization capabilities of meta-learning from a statistical learning viewpoint are summarized. Applications to communication systems, including decoding and power allocation, are discussed next, followed by an introduction to aspects related to the integration of meta-learning with emerging computing technologies, namely neuromorphic and quantum computing. The monograph concludes with an overview of open research challenges.
