Daraufhin wird die aktuelle Studienlage bezüglich der Fragestellung untersucht, ob und welche Einflüsse die Ernährungsweise auf die Alzheimer-Demenz haben kann.Alzheimer-Demenz ist eine nicht heilbare Krankheit und mittlerweile die weltweit fünfthäufigste Todesursache. Aktuell wird vermutet, dass 10 % der über 65-Jährigen und 40 % der über 80-Jährigen an dieser Demenzform leiden und insgesamt circa 50 Millionen Menschen weltweit betroffen sind. Aufgrund einer immer älter werdenden Gesellschaft wird angenommen, dass die Zahl der Erkrankten zukünftig dramatisch steigen wird. Die Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) priorisiert daher, ein besseres Verständnis demenzieller Erkrankungen hinsichtlich präventiver Maßnahmen zu entwickeln.Alois Alzheimer beschrieb 1907 zum ersten Mal die Pathologie der Alzheimer-Demenz. Ausgehend von seiner Beschreibung sind die Kernmerkmale der Erkrankung bis heute das Vorhandensein von extrazellulären Ansammlungen, eines Proteins, das als Amyloid-¿-Protein bekannt ist und intrazellulären fibrillären Aggregaten des Tau-Proteins, die abnorm phosphoryliert vorliegen.
