Krige, afgifter, nye landbrugsmetoder, stærke biskopper og nye skibstyper gjorde de ca. 250 år, processen strakte sig over, til en turbolent periode, og overgangen til pengeøkonomi og begyndende nationalstatsdannelse var langtfra nem.Møntbrug behandler møntfund ud fra en arkæologisk metode og tegner derfor et samlet billede af de økonomiske forhold i alle samfundets sociale lag: by- og landbefolkningen såvel som bondestanden og håndværkerne. De få skriftlige kilder fra perioden handler derimod udelukkende om den sociale elites brug af penge.I bogen behandles alle møntfund fra Sjælland, Lolland og Falster. Det er dermed det første regionale studie, hvor danske møntfund gennem knap 250 år tolkes i både lokalt, nationalt og internationalt perspektiv.
