Gage Earle Freeman (1820-1903) wrote a number of articles on falconry. He was introduced to the sport in England and retained a life-long interest in it, often working with kestrel-hawks, peregrine falcons, and sparrow hawks. He was also an esteemed poet, winning four Seatonian Prizes; a father to ten children, and married twice. He attended St. John's College, Cambridge, graduating in 1845 with a B.A. and became an ordained priest in 1847, receiving his M.A. in 1850. In 1889, he became a vicar and a private chaplain to the Earl of Lonsdale, and remained in that position until his death. This new edition is dedicated to the Duke of St. Albans, remembering school days in Judde House, Tonbridge.
A compact, comprehensive, and very silly field guide featuring more than 200 of the rudest birds on Earth, this edition is crammed full of classic, monochrome plumage art paired with the delightful but dirty aphorisms (think "I'm going to need more booze to deal with this week") that made the Effin' Birds Twitter feed a household name.

Award-winning environmental scientist, naturalist, writer, educator, and artist Todd Ballantine wings his way across the vast Southeast with entertaining prose and beautiful, instructive illustrations in this delightful exploration of one hundred birds in their various habitats. Chapter by chapter Ballantine highlights which birds can be found at the beach, along the ocean and estuaries, in marshes and wetlands, across fields and open areas, among the brush at the wood's edge, and in the forest. Through his accurate and expressive illustrations, he identifies their plumage, silhouettes, shapes, and coloration, as well as their migration, habitats, and behaviors. " . . . I can hardly meet a wild bird or beast even now without renewed wonder at . . . his instant response to every delicate impression, as if each moment brought a new message from earth or heaven and he must not miss it . . ."-William LongHow Animals Talk and Other Pleasant Studies of Birds and Beasts (1919), is a classic report on the author's pioneering research. A dedicated naturalist, Long was the first to challenge conventional research based on data into animal intelligence. During decades of field work he focused on the telepathic ways animals communicate in the wild. Concluding that animals are much more intelligent, emotional, and moral than previously believed, he wrote about what he observed related to the impact of human presence on animal life and reflected on the cost of separating ourselves from animals, who help define our place in the world. A must-read for every natural historian, the book is enriched by the highly regarded work of illustrator Charles Copeland.
