KULTURHISTORIE MED LANGE ØRER Tag med på en spændende rejse i kaninens historie. Her i Danmark starter den for 800 år siden og ender i vore dages mangfoldige forhold mellem mennesker og kaniner som både præmiedyr, kæledyr, sportsdyr, forsøgskanin og som fødevare.I den tidlige middelalder er kaniner en anerkendt del af det sydeuropæiske klosterliv. Herfra springer kaninen over til middelalderens kongelige og adelige kredse, hvor kaniner bliver udsat som eftertragtet jagtbytte på linje med hjortevildt og harer. I renæssancens billedsprog møder vi kaninerne, snart som symboler på positiv frugtbarhed eller liderlig løssluppenhed, snart som symboler på uskyld og paradisisk fred. I 1600-tallet er kaninerne fortsat en del af den europæiske hofkultur, og der oprettes kongelige kaninhaver eller kanin-øer. Med romantikkens naturdyrkelse i slutningen af 1700-tallet bliver kaniner centrale i dyrkelsen af dyrene som dekorative fornøjelser. Nu er det især de hvide angorakaniner, som får tildelt øer i slots- og herregårdsparkerne. I 1800-tallet bredte kaninavlen sig til store dele af verden. I Nordeuropa blev "kaninsagen" en social bevægelse. Herefter går det stærkt. Under de to verdenskrige bliver kaninavlen helt central som en billig og hurtig vej til kød og pels. Især slagtekaninerne holder skansen indtil 1970'erne og -80'erne. I de sidste 25 år er kaninfolket blevet en mere sammensat skare. Kaninhop er opstået som kaninverdenens svar på agility med hunde.
