Når vi mister en vi elsker, er der mange faser og følelser, der er almenmenneskelige. Men ethvert tab er også sit eget – og derfor kan mønstre, reaktioner og behov være helt forskellige. Når vi behandler det at miste, er der er enighed om, at et tab gennem selvmord er i en kategori for sig, i forhold til at miste gennem sygdom, alderdom eller ulykke. Bogens forfattere har en stor ekspertise i tab ved selvmord og gennemgår i 9 kapitler, hvordan krop og sind reagerer ved selvmord, hvordan det er at være efterlevende til et selvmord, hvordan det er at være omgivelser til en efterlevende, og hvordan man som fagperson kan få hjælp til at håndtere samtalen med de efterlevende. Forfatterne kommer ind på emner som skyld & skam, udfordringer med at få hverdagen til at fungere og hvordan sprog, kommunikation, tanker og billeder kan forandre sig. Bogen er omhyggelig med at differentiere mellem forskellige aldersgrupper og relationsgrupper, da den særlige kontekst i ethvert tilfælde kan have stor betydning for, hvordan sorgen og tabet skal håndteres.
