He joins forces with the Duke of Bouillon and other disaffected nobles to plot against the Cardinal, but their plans are ultimately foiled and Cinq-Mars is executed for treason.The novel explores themes of power, ambition, loyalty, and betrayal, as well as the complex political and social landscape of 17th century France.
