Bag om ENVIRONMENT and HUMANITARIAN ACTION
In September 2021, Burkina Faso will have more than one million internally displaced persons (IDPs) receiving food to cover their food security needs. Our study analyzed the environmental impact of this assistance. It targeted twelve field sites in the country's six humanitarian regions in 2021. The Nexus Environmental Assessment Tool (NEAT+) was used for this study. Field observations showed a negative impact on the environment after food distribution, livestock rearing, farming, and irrigation system deployment. This impact is illustrated by air and water pollution, deforestation, water scarcity, soil degradation, climate change and flooding. This study is being conducted in a context where efforts are being made to strengthen coordination on accountability and environmental management issues. However, these efforts need to be strengthened and coordinated. The shortcomings identified, at different levels, have allowed the formulation of perspectives for a better Environment and Humanitarian Action tandem.
