This is a critical history of spy fiction, film and television in the United States, with a particular focus on the American fictional spies that rivaled (and were often influenced by) Ian Fleming's James Bond. James Fenimore Cooper's Harvey Birch, based on a real-life counterpart, appeared in his novel The Spy in 1821. While Harvey Birch's British rivals dominated spy fiction from the late 1800s until the mid-1930s, American spy fiction came of age shortly thereafter. The spy boom in novels and films during the 1960s, spearheaded by Bond, heavily influenced the espionage genre in the United States for years to come, including series like The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Matt Helm. The author demonstrates that, while American authors currently dominate the international spy fiction market, James Bond has cast a very long shadow, for a very long time.
While it is self-evident that the amount we can learn about reality must be limited by the power of our brains, our science has nothing to say about this constraint. The power can be quantified by the average time, tau, our brains take to process a bit of information. This number proves to be the missing connection between reality and the ¿consciousness¿ of the observer required by the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics. It also provides the ¿tick¿ of a personal neurological scale of time that both quantifies our ¿psychological¿ arrow of time and is the natural scale for our observations (as opposed to our theoretical descriptions) of reality. Quanta are what appear at the scale of reality where the discontinuity of this scale becomes significant. In a new logic system (physics+tau) located on the border with neuroscience, all the familiar paradoxes of quantum mechanics are reduced to common sense, without affecting its validity in the objective logic of physics. Einstein would be pleased that God no longer needs to play dice.

Four friends are dismal students at most things they try - schoolwork, and particularly sports. When they all entered a race in the swimming carnival at the beginning of the year, the rest of the children criticised their poor performance. They went to their favourite spot by the river to get away from the rest of the school. It was there that they heard a dog barking on the island in the middle of the river where the water was the widest. They swam with great difficulty to the island to find out what was going on. They had to care for the dog and feed it. That meant swimming across the river to the island twice a day, every day, even in winter.
