Fjorten ørnefjer er historien om den unge indianer, Water Bear, oghans mange oplevelser, da han forsøger at skaffe de ørnefjer, han har tabt i etvæddemål til sin gode ven, White Feather.
 Rammen omromanen er indianerbyen Mitutanka, der ligger ved Missouri River i NorthDakota. Hele byen skal flyttes sydpå for at sikre fremtiden. Det er forbundetmed stor risiko, og da to unge piger samtidig forsvinder, vokser utrygheden.
Alt imensbyen er travlt optaget af den forestående flytning, slutter Water Bear sig tilet hold fuglefængere for at udrede præmien på de fjorten ørnefjer til WhiteFeather. Holdet drager den lange vej over prærien for at prøve lykken frastammens ørnefangergruber ved Little Missouri River,
