(Século XII a XIV) - Predomina o lirismo trovadoresco em todas as cortes europeias, e essa corrente propaga-se a Portugal, primeiramente, acordando os latentes germes populares, depois pelas relações da corte portuguesa com a de Leão, à qual convergiam os trovadores italianos, como Sordello e Bonifácio Calvo, referidos e imitados nos nossos Cancioneiros; e, por fim, pela emigração de alguns fidalgos portugueses, que acompanharam D. Afonso III, quando Conde de Bolonha, durante a sua permanência na corte de S. Luís, que era então o meio ativo da imitação da poesia provençalesca modificada pelo norte da França.Uma fase nova de desenvolvimento lírico começa com o rei D. Dinis, que imita diretamente a poética provençal, elaborando ao mesmo tempo as formas tradicionais populares dos Cantares de amigo, das Serranas e Dizeres galezianos. Por último, a poesia provençalesca decai do gosto da corte, sendo preferidos os lais bretãos, que pelo seu desenvolvimento narrativo levaram à criação da novela em prosa do Amadis de Gaula. Os lais narrativos tinham dado tema aos poemas galo-bretãos de Tristão e de Flores e Brancaflor, muito lidos na corte portuguesa, que também influía na corte castelhana de Afonso XI, depois da batalha do Salado.

A discussão dos problemas acerca de Gil Vicente, de Sá de Miranda, Bernardim Ribeiro, Cristóvão Falcão, Francisco de Morais, Ferreira, Diogo Bernardes, Camões e Damião de Góis, provocou um movimento de estudos especiais, com achados felizes que anularam hipóteses provisórias. Atacados por essas ratificações de factos isolados, mas orientando-nos sempre no ponto de vista do conjunto, desconhecemos o azedume que levou Herculano a dizer: as missangas valem muito nesta nossa Guiné literária. Os seus efeitos foram vastos, pois que o assombroso fenómeno não era simplesmente local, mas a consequência da solidariedade do Ocidente, do concurso europeu. José de Maistre considerava o século XVIII como a continuação do século XVI, em que o humanismo e o jesuitismo disputam a disciplina dos espíritos, e o protestantismo vem acordar duas fortes nacionalidades; é como um prolongamento do século XVII, cujas sínteses filosóficas do cartesianismo e do baconismo vêm sistematizar o saber enciclopédico e generalizá-lo na instrução politécnica, alargando os moldes das universidades medievais e das academias da Renascença. Em uma frase luminosa sintetizou Comte esse período dos impulsos simultâneos do pensamento e da ação - o século excecional, e Guizot confessava, que se lhe fosse dado destacar na história o século da sua simpatia, apontava o século XVIII. É quando a França retoma a sua hegemonia medieval, influenciando de novo na mentalidade e na sociabilidade da Europa, pelos livros e pelas modas elegantes.

Os contos tradicionais são imensamente simpáticos às crianças, e já Platão os considerava como um excelente meio de educação. No seu tratado da República escrevia: "Tu não sabes que os primeiros discursos que se dizem às crianças são fábulas!... Consentiremos que elas ouçam toda a casta de fábula forjada pelo primeiro que se aproxima? Recomendaremos às amas e às mães para só contarem aquelas que forem escolhidas e servirem-se delas para lhes formar as almas com mais cuidado do que o que empregam em tratar-lhes dos corpos." Este emprego foi sempre seguido nas escolas greco-romanas, como se vê pela transmissão das fábulas esópicas, adotaram-no os pregadores da Idade Média nos sermões com exemplos, e ainda M.me De Beaumont o generalizou no fim do século XVIII. O intuito pedagógico desnaturou o conto com o exclusivo fim moral; perdeu-se a intuição da beleza tradicional, da singeleza popular, e a poesia espontânea do passado achou-se substituída pela invenção pedante dos mestres. Só depois da renovação da pedagogia como ciência aplicada da psicologia, é que os contos tradicionais e os jogos infantis foram considerados como elementos de educação, aproveitando antes de tudo as primeiras curiosidades do espírito e a coordenação dos movimentos.

Assim como na linguagem existem duas correntes de elaboração, uma popular ou dialetal e outra escrita, ou regularizada por uma norma gramatical, acontecendo muitas vezes desconhecerem-se estas duas correntes, ou entrecruzarem-se por efeito de causas sociais e históricas, o mesmo fenómeno se observa com as tradições novelescas: um grande número de contos persiste exclusivamente na transmissão oral do povo, que os transforma desde a primitiva conceção mítica até à simples aventura faceta ou à referência vaga de qualquer adágio; existe simultaneamente um outro grupo de contos conservados por via da redação literária e escritos com uma certa intencionalidade moral ou artística. Nem sempre estas duas correntes se comunicam, havendo contudo uma época em que os escritores deram forma literária aos temas tradicionais ou os imitaram, e em que os contos escritos por seu turno vieram a influir na imaginação popular pelo emprego da Parábola na prédica religiosa e do Exemplo na doutrinação concreta da moral.
