Asnières n'était pas encore à la mode. En ce moment cette portion de la Seine ressemble au grand canal de Venise. Les embarcations se sont réfugiées dans la ville: grandes barques pontées, blondies de goudron, avec une ceinture verte comme les treschuits de Hollande, toues cloutées de chevilles en bois, bateaux à vapeur, remorqueurs, galiotes, clippers, youyous, canots, yoles, périssoires, bateaux de tous les gabarits. Les mâts se dressent rayant l'air bleu de leur ton saumon-clair, et balancent leur légère flamme qu'agite ce vent d'est qui pousse nos lettres par delà les remparts et les forts, au-dessus des casques pointus de l'ennemi. Mais voici, parmi cette flottille pacifique, des chaloupes d'un galbe farouche et rébarbatif. Leur avant porte un éperon comme une galère romaine. L'arrière plonge dans l'eau comme pour exhausser la proue. Une sévère peinture grise revêt leurs flancs de tôle striés de meurtrières. On dirait des orques dans un banc de harengs inoffensifs.

Son nez semblait un coin que l'on eût fait entrer de force au milieu de sa figure; son menton avait été taille à coups de hache par la négligente nature, et du milieu de son cou, laissé à découvert par une cravate très-basse, s'avançait un énorme cartilage qui eût fait dire aux bonnes femmes qu'un fameux quartier de la pomme fatale s'était arrêté à sa gorge, et qu'il ne pouvait pas se défendre d'en avoir mangé. Des tics nerveux lui agitaient la face de temps en temps; il roulait des yeux exorbitants, et brochait des babines comme un singe qui dit ses patenôtres tout bas. Cet homme avait, à coup sûr, posé pour le premier casse-noisette que l'on ait fait à Nuremberg: du reste, il ne sonnait mot.

I have often been caricatured in Turkish dress seated upon cushions, and surrounded by cats so familiar that they did not hesitate to climb upon my shoulders and even upon my head. The caricature is truth slightly exaggerated, and I must own that all my life I have been as fond of animals in general and of cats in particular as any brahmin or old maid. The great Byron always trotted a menagerie round with him, even when travelling, and he caused to be erected, in the park of Newstead Abbey, a monument to his faithful Newfoundland dog Boatswain, with an inscription in verse of his own inditing. I cannot be accused of imitation in the matter of our common liking for dogs, for that love manifested itself in me at an age when I was yet ignorant of the alphabet.

Comme le poëme du noble lord, le testament du voleur roturier est en octaves; l'entrelacement des rimes est presque pareil; c'est le même mélange de sensibilité et de raillerie, d'enthousiasme et de prosaïsme; à côté d'une page toute moite de pleurs vous trouvez un chapelet de coq-à l'âne et de rébus aussi détestables que les calembours du pair anglais. L'effet d'une peinture suave est détruit par une esquisse grotesque à la manière de Callot; une digression mène à une autre, les legs ironiques se succèdent sans interruption; à celui-ci une ballade, à celui-là un rondeau, à cet autre une savate ou un plat à barbe; tout ce que la fantaisie la plus flottante peut avoir de caprices, vous le trouverez dans les deux testaments de Villon; car il y en a deux, un petit et un grand.
