In garden research, Spanish and Portuguese green spaces are scarcely visible. This is a striking contrast not only to their diversity and quality but also to the global network of both countries, especially during the Early Modern period. To counterbalance this, specialists from Spain, Portugal and Germany gathered in 2021 on an international and interdisciplinary conference. In the Portuguese Palace of Queluz they discussed the fundamental issues of garden art on the Iberian Peninsula. Their contributions are collected in this book. They are proof of a cross-border transcultural approach, which has freed itself from national stereotypes. Also, it addresses insights which have been derived from the cultural interaction across the centuries and the different epochs of garden art.

This volume seeks to delve into this facet of his legacy, exploring it from diverse political and philosophical perspectives.

Tailoring Identities in Victorian Literature is a compelling exploration of the representation of clothing in Victorian literature. The author argues that the study of fashion and clothing can contribute to a deeper understanding of literary texts and their contexts. While fashion has often been associated with frivolity, this volume sheds light on the novel possibilities that can arise from the intersection of literary analysis with fashion theory, revealing fashion as a system of meaning that reflects deep social and cultural transformations, and offering new and innovative directions in research and literary analysis. Tailoring Identities in Victorian Literature draws on the conceptual framework of fashion theory to investigate novels in which the fashion system organises the signs of the dressed body, almost as if forging its own language. Focusing on the Victorian period, pivotal period in fashion history, the volume offers a rich and nuanced account of the complex relationship between clothing, literature, and identity, in nineteenth-century literature.

The book Us & Them: Women Writers¿ Discourses on Foreignness analyses the contingent nature of the constructions of foreignness in Ireland and Galicia. On the basis of various comparable circumstances in both communities ¿migration flows, increasingly multicultural societies, constant renegotiations of national identity, and the growing visibility of women in the public sphere¿ this book traces the multiple ways in which gender is intertwined with foreignness. Focusing on literary works published since the 1980s the author presents contemporary women writers¿ new insights into cultural difference.

This volume gathers empirical and historical perspectives on closed captioning on German television for children who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing. It is partly based on a two-year study, SDH4KIDS, in which the following research question was addressed: Which subtitle-specific aspects have a positive impact on comprehensibility and ­acceptability of subtitled TV-programmes for d/Deaf and hard of hearing children aged between 8 and 12? The quantitative study with over 200 participants was accompanied by a qualitative study gathering eye-tracking data on subtitle reading behaviour with a smaller group of participants of the same age. Both studies are presented and discussed in detail. The results were furthermore used to develop guidelines for professional subtitling practice. In addition, this book provides a historical overview of subtitling practice for people who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing in the Federal Republic and the former German Democratic Republic of Germany. For this, previously unpublished material from the German Federal Archives has been examined.

Translations of the Bible take place in the midst of tension between politics, ideology and power. With the theological authority of the book as God¿s Word, not focusing on the process of translating is stating the obvious. Inclinations, fluency and zeitgeist play as serious a role as translators¿ person, faith and worldview, as do their vocabulary, poetics and linguistic capacity. History has seen countless retranslations of the Bible. What are the considerations according to which Biblical retranslations are being produced in current, 21st century, contexts? From retranslations of the Hebrew Bible to those of the Old and New Testaments, to mutual influences of Christian and Jewish translational traditions ¿ the papers collected here all deal with the question of what is to be [re]gained with the production of a new translation where, at times, many a previous one has already existed.

Linguistic minorities are everywhere, and they are diverse. In this context, linguistic mediation activities ¿ whether translation or interpreting ¿ are key to the social inclusion of any kind of linguistic minority. In most societies autochthonous linguistic minorities coexist with foreign-speaking minorities and people with (or without) dis­abilities who rely linguistically or medially adapted on texts to access information. The present volume draws on this broad understanding of the concept of linguistic minorities to explore some of the newest developments in the field of translation studies and linguistics. The articles are structured around three main axes: ¿ accessibility of content, especially audiovisual translation¿ intralingual translation, including initiatives regarding plain language, easy-to-read and easy language¿ mediation for minorities in a broader sense and language ideologies.
