Bosun, Ron Telford is keen to preserve the social history of an industry that no longer exists; believing that some record should be kept showing the dangers and risks that the men of Grimsby, Hull and other ports of the UK endured to put 'fish on the table'.In this book of true tales, Ron starts at the beginning of his career as a young deckie learner, progressing to deck hand and attendance at Nautical College to obtain a Third Hand's Certificate.Ron relives the trip and describes events from setting sail and as the trip commences to the sudden changes in weather and the obstacles that had to be overcome. He remembers well the skill of the Skipper, who had to find and catch the fish, the teamwork of the crew who had to clean and store the catch and the expertise of the engineers who kept the ship mechanically sound.Ron Telford also recalls the many problems encountered with the weather, equipment, trawl, net mending, various types of fish, the meals and the camaraderie amongst the crew. And of course, he recollects homelife - once the trip was over, having only 72 hours ashore - together with the heartache of having to leave loved ones in order to earn a living.

Being a volunteer listener in a primary school is a very straightforward description and an accurate one, but the author insight discovered that there was a lot more to it than he expected. Although it could be treated very straightforwardly, simply listening to one child after another reading from his or her given book and correcting their mistakes and so on, he decided very early on that his place was not to teach or assess. And indeed although he had read two or three excellent books on the subject, he had no intention of getting into the technicalities such as phonics, split digraphs and so on, not least because it may have conflicted with what and how the children had been taught.Another discovery that, as one chapter describes, there is much more to be observed during the bird's eye view of seeing a child increasing his or her reading proficiency and indeed how they are at the beginning of finding their way in the world. This book provides a clear insight into why reading standards for a large percentage of children are not satisfactory. Good reading skills are absolutely essential for a child's intellectual growth and parents may not realise the impact on their children's whole life if their reading skills are compromised.Helping children with their reading is useful, rewarding, sometimes amusing, always fascinating and in the author's experience an ongoing pleasure.
Consequences Beyond Belief is a first-hand account of shame, guilt, drugs, hope, love and mental health from a child of an addict. Nothing is out of bounds, and it is not dramatised or stripped back. There are a lot of references to research conducted in terms of mental health and addiction from various sources.Social norms teach us what a heroin addict may look like. Common perceptions by the media and popular films such as Trainspotting show themes of desperate addicts who may be homeless, lacking work or even resorting to prostitution. Even popular music culture like Ed Sheeran's The A Team, shows the dark side of drug addiction. In fact, ¿ of homeless people cite drug and alcohol abuse as a reason for becoming homeless. But my story breaks statistics and challenges what we think we know. Introducing my mother.Let's start a conversation and help those who are suffering in silence. I felt so alone as a teenager, as though I was the only one combating this. If I had a guide like this, it would have changed my outlook. I wouldn't have blamed myself or felt so isolated.
Drink-driving deferrals and reckless driving brought me here to write this tread through realities - including the effects on the mental health of both parties. My disability and continued rehabilitation has taught me much about social interactions and impositions. What people are saying about this book..."When governments understand how to alter societal ructions, they will send this book all across the world.""Put my teenager off drink and drugs.""Brought our family closer.""Changed my parenting style, which has been a plus in all areas. I think you're here to teach."

If the boys of Elderberry Lane in the 1940s are living in a world of deprivation, they are unaware of it. Nor do they realise the degree of freedom they have in this world without computers or television, or even pop music. Grown-ups are remote figures who leave them mostly to their own devices. Free to think for themselves, they are able to investigate the important facts of life in their own way.Inside the Globe follows the progress of a boy in this world, from pre-school to near-adolescence. Most of the thinking and investigating is done by his older brother, Pete, who is always one step ahead of the crowd., while his best friend Johnny disputes the claims that Pete hands down to the younger kids. The title derives from the boy's own attempt to reconcile Pete's insistence that the world is round with the evidence of his own eyes.By turns quirky, gripping and poignant, with much going on to entertain and amuse readers of all ages, the books goes far beyond the mere evocation of the social conditions of a bygone age.
